CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Mazda MAZDA3
overall

Summary
With 63 currently listed for sale and an average price of $20,252 CAD, 20.6% of 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.
Why it stands out
The 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 stands out by delivering intrinsic value in a compact-car package, especially when measured against traditional mainstream alternatives. It also benefits from Mazda’s reputation for making desirable cars, and this year brings a new Platinum Quartz Metallic paint colour. For buyers, the appeal is straightforward: the MAZDA3 combines stylish design, enjoyable driving manners, and strong safety ratings in a way that gives it a more premium feel than many rivals.
That said, the 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 is not without compromises. Its fuel economy is poor, the back seat is cramped, and its technology can be unintuitive. Even so, those drawbacks do not erase the car’s core strengths, and the overall impression is of a compact model that prioritises style, driving enjoyment, and value over outright practicality.

This car is beautiful, so far no problems reliability-wise, to be expected from a tried-and-true NA 4 cyl paired to a traditional automatic transmission (no cvt unlike the current corolla and civic autos!). This car drives great for what it is. Speaking for the FWD model, handling is direct and predictable and has good feedback even with stock tires (215/45r18s on my trim). Even though this car isn’t as powerful as the turbo model, it’s fast enough to still be very enjoyable to drive. At 6’0, I surprisingly fit in the backseat of the hatch even with the front seat all the way back (not super comfortably though) and my head doesn’t touch the ceiling. Would recommend anybody interested to test drive this car.

I love this car because of its simple yet luxurious interior and it’s smooth drive. Also love the 6 speed. Perfect daily driver with room for modifications.

By far the best car in its class for performance, luxury, and technology. The turbo engine combined with already excellent handling takes the already popular Mazda 3 to an elevated level.

I love the comfort of the interior, the seats molds around your body. It has a lot of nice features that I was looking for, sunroof, keyless entry,,heater seats and a great Bose stereo that blows your mind. I wish it came with a bigger spoiler of a different color than the car. My biggest change would be to put a black package on them. They look silly with black wheels and chrome trim, I am adding aftermarket black trim everywhere. The only other thing Is, I wish it looked a little more sporty. I bought the turbo and it has plenty of kick but could have used a little bit of a different design than the regular model. For the 32k price range it was a good value in today’s market if it was a little sportier looking.

Is the 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 a good car?
Yes — the 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise the comfortable, luxurious interior, impressive handling, and strong performance, especially with the turbo engine. The Bose stereo system also comes up as a favourite feature, and the car’s overall feel is described as refined and desirable.
The main trade-offs are its poor fuel economy and cramped back seat, while the technology can be unintuitive. That said, the MAZDA3’s stylish design and enjoyable driving manners make it a strong fit if you want a compact car that feels more premium than many mainstream rivals.

The expert assessment also describes the car as one that delivers intrinsic value and can be trusted for its overall quality and sophistication.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Mazda MAZDA3?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup spans sedan and hatchback body styles, with the base versions offering the core Mazda3 experience and higher grades adding more equipment and a more upscale feel. In Canada, some safety features are not standard on every trim, so you should check carefully before assuming a car has the full driver-assistance suite.
- Powertrain: You can find a 2.0-litre four-cylinder, a non-turbo 2.5-litre four-cylinder, and a turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder. The turbo version is paired with standard AWD and delivers the strongest performance, while the base engine is the most fuel-efficient.
- Safety package: Blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard, while adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and automatic high-beam headlights cost extra. GT grades add adaptive front headlights, Traffic Jam Assist, reverse automatic braking, and a surround-view camera system.
- Infotainment: Mazda Connect uses an 8.8-inch static display, Bluetooth, steering wheel controls, and voice recognition. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are available, and Mazda Connected Services adds remote functions and collision notification for two years.
- Fuel efficiency: The 2.0-litre engine uses 7.6 L/100 km combined, or 7.7 L/100 km with the manual. The non-turbo 2.5-litre ranges from 7.8 to 8.6 L/100 km combined, while the turbo uses 8.8 L/100 km in sedan form and 8.9 L/100 km in hatchback form.
Which 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 trim should I buy?
The 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 is offered in 3 trim levels: GX, GS, GT.
Here's the short version:
- GX: This is the most affordable way into the MAZDA3, and it gives you the base 2.0-litre engine with the best fuel economy in the lineup. It makes sense if you want the styling, safety reputation, and driving feel without paying for extra power or luxury touches.
- GS: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it moves you into the more desirable 2.5-litre engine and broader equipment mix without jumping to the top end of the range. If you want the sweet spot between price, performance, and everyday comfort, this is the one to focus on.
- GT: This is the trim to target if you want the most complete feature set, including the advanced safety and convenience upgrades mentioned in the safety content. It suits you best if you want the most premium MAZDA3 experience and are willing to pay for it.
GT grades get adaptive front headlights, Traffic Jam Assist, reverse automatic braking, and a surround-view camera system.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Mazda MAZDA3?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right car.
- Deal availability: 28.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 154 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.83% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $22,643 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Mazda MAZDA3's resale value?
The current average of $22,660 CAD sits slightly below last year's $24,856 CAD.
That softer pricing suggests the market has become more favourable for buyers, which can make it harder for sellers to command top dollar right now. If you own one, you may need to price competitively to stand out, especially against the available inventory.
At the same time, the model’s strong reputation, desirable design, and premium feel should help it remain appealing to used shoppers. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 safe?
The 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS and five-star ratings in every NHTSA assessment, including rollover resistance.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
Blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard, while adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and automatic high-beam headlights are extra. GT grades add adaptive front headlights, Traffic Jam Assist, reverse automatic braking, and a surround-view camera system.
Should I buy a 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 28.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.83% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- This year adds a new Platinum Quartz Metallic paint colour.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $21,308 CAD, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $22,660 CAD average.
- It introduced the turbocharged engine and a more performance-focused character.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $25,138 CAD, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $22,660 CAD average.
- It adds a more upscale feel with hatchback versatility and improved everyday usefulness.
The bottom line: The 2022 is the right default if you want the strongest mix of value, safety, and style at today’s pricing. If you’re more price-sensitive, the 2021 is worth a look for lower entry cost, while the 2023 makes sense if you want the newer model-year polish and are willing to pay more.
