What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Kia Sportage?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The LX is the entry point, while LX Nightsky adds more equipment and the EX and higher trims bring a more upscale feel. The EX also gains a standard panoramic sunroof, and the SX is the most feature-rich version.
• Powertrain: Most versions use a 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine with 181 horsepower, while the SX gets a turbocharged setup with 237 hp and stronger acceleration. Front-wheel drive is standard on the entry-level LX, and all-wheel drive is available or standard on higher grades.
• Safety package: The EX and SX include forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assistance. Blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert is also included on those trims and on LX Nightsky, while the SX adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability.
• Infotainment: You get an 8-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Higher trims add UVO Intelligence connected services, wireless smartphone charging, satellite radio, and an 8-speaker Harman Kardon audio system.
• Fuel efficiency: No fuel-consumption figure is stated in the available data.

Which 2022 Kia Sportage trim should I buy?

The 2022 Kia Sportage is offered in 5 trim levels: LX, LX Nightsky, EX, EX Premium S, and SX.

Here's the short version:

• LX: This is the most affordable way into the Sportage, but it is the least equipped and is best if you mainly want the core SUV package at the lowest price.
• LX Nightsky: This trim adds more appeal than the base LX and brings blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, making it a smarter value pick if you want extra safety equipment without moving too far up the range.
• EX: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the standard panoramic sunroof and the key driver-assistance features, while keeping the Sportage’s easy-to-use tech and upscale feel.
• EX Premium S: This trim sits above the EX and is for buyers who want a more richly equipped version without jumping straight to the top model.
• SX: This is the most powerful and most luxurious version, with the turbocharged engine, standard AWD, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, wireless charging, and the premium audio system.

The safety package is strongest on the EX and SX, while LX Nightsky is the trim to watch if you want some of that safety content at a lower price.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Kia Sportage?

This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 33.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 502 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 13.40% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $21,391 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Kia Sportage's resale value?

The current average of $21,391 CAD sits slightly below last year's $24,702 CAD.

That softer pricing suggests the Sportage is currently more buyer-friendly than seller-friendly, which can make it easier for future owners to move into one at a lower cost. If you buy now, you may benefit from the current market softness, but a future resale will likely depend on how well the vehicle is equipped and maintained.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Kia Sportage safe?

The Kia Sportage is a safe SUV, and only the SX earns an Acceptable headlight rating, which puts it over the line for an IIHS Top Safety Pick laurel.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The EX and SX come with forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assistance. Blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert is included on those trims as well as LX Nightsky, and the SX adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability.

Should I buy a 2022 Kia Sportage or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 33.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 13.40% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It offers familiar styling, up-to-date tech, and available turbocharged performance.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $27,041 CAD, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $21,391 CAD average.
• It brings a more distinctive design and stronger overall modern appeal.

The bottom line: Choose the 2022 if you want the better value and are comfortable with its older design. If you want a newer-feeling Sportage and can spend more, the 2023 is the stronger upgrade path.

How does the 2022 Kia Sportage compare to the 2022 Hyundai Tucson?

Our experts score the 2022 Kia Sportage 7.7/10 and the 2022 Hyundai Tucson 8.3/10. The Tucson is the stronger overall pick, but the Sportage still offers solid value and a well-liked feature set. The Sportage’s appeal leans more toward style, comfort, and available turbocharged performance, while the Tucson brings the edge in overall expert scoring and a newer redesign. If you want the lower average used price, the Sportage is the easier buy; if you want the better-rated package, the Tucson has the advantage.
