What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Hyundai Sonata?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Preferred trim gives you the essentials, but the Sport, Luxury, and N Line add meaningful upgrades such as a panoramic sunroof, leather seating, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, and more distinctive styling. The N Line is the most characterful choice if you want the sportiest look and feel.
• Powertrain: The standard 2.5-litre four-cylinder is tuned for calm, everyday use, while the 1.6-litre turbo four-cylinder adds a bit more punch. The N Line’s turbocharged 2.5-litre engine, wet dual-clutch automatic transmission, sport suspension, and tuned exhaust make it the performance-focused option.
• Safety package: Every 2022 Sonata includes forward collision avoidance assist with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian/cyclist detection, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, driver-attention warning, automatic high-beam headlights, rearview monitor, blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic alert, Rear Occupant Alert, and Safe Exit Warning. Highway Driving Assist lane-centring assistance and a blind-spot view monitor are standard on N Line and Ultimate Hybrid.
• Infotainment: Base models use an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while higher trims move to a 10.25-inch display with navigation. Wireless charging and a 12-speaker Bose audio system are also available on upper trims.
• Fuel efficiency: NRCan combined fuel consumption ranges from 7.7 L/100 km on lower trims to 8.8 L/100 km on the N Line. During testing, it averaged 7.7 L/100 km.

Which 2022 Hyundai Sonata trim should I buy?

The 2022 Hyundai Sonata is offered in 4 trim levels: Preferred, Sport, Luxury, and N Line.

Here's the short version:

• Preferred: This is the value play if you want the lowest entry point and a strong standard equipment list, including heated front seats, adaptive cruise control, an 8-inch touchscreen, and key safety tech. It is the best-value choice for most shoppers.
• Sport: Choose this if you want a more upscale feel without jumping all the way to Luxury. The panoramic sunroof, power driver’s seat, dual-zone climate control, satellite radio, and larger wheels make it a nicer daily driver.
• Luxury: This is the comfort-focused pick, with leather seats, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a Bose audio system, and a more premium cabin presentation.
• N Line: Pick this if you want the most distinctive Sonata. It adds the turbocharged 2.5-litre engine, sport suspension, wet dual-clutch transmission, unique styling, and extra tech, making it the enthusiast’s choice.

Highway Driving Assist lane-centring assistance and a blind-spot view monitor are standard on N Line and Ultimate Hybrid.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Hyundai Sonata?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory to shop carefully and enough price softness to create opportunities.

• Deal availability: 28.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 138 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.03% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $21,300 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Hyundai Sonata's resale value?

The current average of $21,307 CAD sits slightly below last year's $24,221 CAD.

That price movement suggests the Sonata has become more attractive to used buyers, which can help support demand in the near term. For a future seller, the main implication is that today’s lower entry price may leave less room for appreciation, so condition and trim choice matter more.

Because the Sonata is still seen as a strong value proposition, well-kept examples should remain appealing to shoppers looking for a feature-rich midsize sedan. Higher-trim cars with desirable equipment may be easier to position when it is your turn to sell.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Hyundai Sonata safe?

The 2022 Hyundai Sonata gets five stars for overall crash protection from NHTSA, with four stars for front crash protection and five stars for both side crash protection and rollover resistance in the individual tests.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Every 2022 Sonata comes with a comprehensive safety suite that includes forward collision avoidance assist with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian/cyclist detection, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, driver-attention warning, automatic high-beam headlights, rearview monitor, blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic alert, Rear Occupant Alert, and Safe Exit Warning.

IIHS gave the Sonata top “Good” ratings in all six crash tests, and the Sonata N Line and Ultimate Hybrid with LED projector headlights earned a “Good” rating for crash avoidance and mitigation. All other trims with LED reflector headlights received a “Marginal” rating in that area, so headlight equipment is worth checking closely.

Should I buy a 2022 Hyundai Sonata or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 28.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.03% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It combines tremendous value, exceptional quality, and a surprisingly sporty N Line variant.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $18,865 CAD, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $21,307 CAD average.
• It is a credible choice for drivers who want on-pavement performance with passenger and cargo practicality.

The bottom line: The 2022 is the better all-around pick if you want stronger value, a more polished feel, and a broader trim mix. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2021 is worth a look, especially if you want a practical sedan with a sportier edge.
