What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Hyundai Elantra?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The 2022 Hyundai Elantra is available in four trim levels in Canada: Essential, Preferred, Ultimate, and N Line. The Essential is the value play, but it leaves some driver-assistance features optional that are standard on higher trims. The N Line adds sporty design touches, 18-inch alloy wheels, sport seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and a black headliner, but it is not the full-performance Elantra N.
• Powertrain: The standard 2.0-litre four-cylinder makes 147 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque, and it can feel underpowered when you merge or pass. The N Line uses a turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder with 201 hp and a seven-speed DCT, while the Hybrid pairs a 1.6-litre Atkinson-cycle engine with an electric motor and battery pack for stronger efficiency.
• Safety package: Hyundai’s driver-assistance suite includes automatic emergency braking, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assistance, lane-departure warning, lane-centring assistance, automatic high beams, and driver attention alert. Blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert and Safe Exit Warning are standard on all but the Essential, while intersection turn assistance, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, rear automatic braking, and Highway Drive Assist are available higher up the range.
• Infotainment: The base Essential gets an 8-inch touchscreen with a rearview camera, HD Radio, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, four speakers, and dual USB ports. Ultimate and N Line trims add a 10.25-inch touchscreen with navigation, an eight-speaker Bose audio system, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, dynamic voice recognition, and wireless device charging, but the larger screen uses wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada figures range from 6.7 L/100 km for the 2.0-litre engine to 7.6 L/100 km for the N Line, while the Hybrid is rated at 4.4 L/100 km combined. During testing, the N Line returned 6.7 L/100 km.

Which 2022 Hyundai Elantra trim should I buy?

The 2022 Hyundai Elantra is offered in 4 trim levels: Essential, Preferred, Ultimate, and N Line.

Here's the short version:

• Essential: This is the best-value starting point if you want the lowest entry price and a strong safety-and-tech baseline. You get the 8-inch touchscreen, wireless smartphone integration, and standard automatic emergency braking, but some driver-assistance features remain optional here.
• Preferred: This is the trim to focus on if you want the best balance of equipment and value. It adds more speakers, satellite radio, and connected services, while also unlocking more of the safety suite that is standard on higher trims.
• Ultimate: Choose this if you want the most upscale mainstream Elantra experience. It brings the 10.25-inch touchscreen, navigation, Bose audio, digital instrument cluster, wireless charging, and more premium convenience features.
• N Line: Pick this if you want the sportiest version in the standard gas lineup. It adds the turbocharged engine, sport-tuned suspension, multi-link rear suspension, larger brakes, and a more aggressive cabin and exterior treatment, but the sport seats may not suit everyone on long drives.

Safety-package note: blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert and Safe Exit Warning are not available on Essential, but they are standard on the other trims.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Hyundai Elantra?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully and compare listings.

• Deal availability: 29.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 655 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.95% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $18,585 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Hyundai Elantra's resale value?

The current average of $18,659 CAD sits slightly below last year's $21,191 CAD.

That price drop suggests the market has become more favourable for buyers, but it also means future sellers may need to price more competitively to stand out. If you buy now, you may be entering at a softer point in the cycle, which can help limit near-term depreciation pressure. The Elantra’s strong value reputation and broad appeal should help support demand, especially for well-equipped trims with desirable safety and tech features.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Hyundai Elantra safe?

The 2022 Hyundai Elantra earns five-star overall crash protection from NHTSA, with four-star ratings for front crash protection and five-star ratings for side crash protection and rollover resistance. It also earns top Good ratings in all six IIHS crash tests.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Hyundai’s safety suite includes automatic emergency braking across the board, plus forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assistance, lane-departure warning, lane-centring assistance, automatic high beams, and driver attention alert. Blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert and Safe Exit Warning are standard on all but the Essential, while higher trims can add intersection turn assistance, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, rear automatic braking, and Highway Drive Assist. One caveat is that lower-level trims with halogen headlights received a Marginal IIHS headlight rating, while LED-equipped versions were rated Good.

Should I buy a 2022 Hyundai Elantra or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 29.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.95% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It combines stylish design, strong value, and impressive standard safety tech.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $17,476 CAD, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $18,659 CAD average.
• It delivers a redesigned, more sophisticated compact sedan with strong space and refinement.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $20,762 CAD, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $18,659 CAD average.
• It broadens the lineup with a 4.7 L/100 km hybrid and an even wider range of choices.

The bottom line: The 2022 is the sweet spot if you want the strongest mix of price, safety, and features. If your priority is saving money, the 2021 is the better value pick; if you want more choice and a newer-feeling lineup, the 2023 is worth the extra spend.

How does the 2022 Hyundai Elantra compare to the 2022 Honda Civic?

Our experts score the 2022 Hyundai Elantra 8.7/10 and the 2022 Honda Civic 7.7/10. The Elantra stands out for stronger value, a lower average used price, and a broader set of standard safety and tech features. The Civic brings a bit more horsepower, but it costs more on the used market and does not match the Elantra’s deal availability. If you want the better bargain, the Elantra is the easier recommendation; if you care more about the extra power, the Civic has the edge.
