What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Hyundai Elantra?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Essential trim is the most basic version, while Preferred, Ultimate, and N Line add more equipment and a more upscale feel. The base trim leaves some driver-assistance features optional, so it is worth checking exactly which safety and convenience items are fitted.
• Powertrain: The standard 2.0-litre four-cylinder makes 147 horsepower and is paired with a six-speed manual on Essential or a CVT on other non-N Line trims. The N Line uses a turbocharged 1.6-litre engine with 201 hp and a seven-speed DCT, while the Hybrid uses a 1.6-litre engine with an electric motor and battery pack for maximum efficiency.
• Safety package: Hyundai’s driver-assistance suite includes automatic emergency braking, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assistance, lane-departure warning, lane-centring assistance, automatic high beams, and driver attention alert. Blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert and Safe Exit Warning are standard on all but Essential, while intersection turn assistance, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, rear automatic braking, and Highway Drive Assist are available higher up the range.
• Infotainment: Essential gets an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, HD Radio, a rearview camera, four speakers, and dual USB ports. Ultimate and N Line add a 10.25-inch touchscreen with navigation, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, wireless charging, and an eight-speaker Bose audio system, but only wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with that larger screen.
• Fuel efficiency: The 2.0-litre engine is rated as low as 6.7 L/100 km combined, while the N Line is rated as high as 7.6 L/100 km combined. The Hybrid is rated at 4.4 L/100 km combined.

Which 2022 Hyundai Elantra trim should I buy?

The 2022 Hyundai Elantra is offered in 4 trim levels: Essential, Preferred, Ultimate, and N Line.

Here's the short version:

• Essential: This is the value play if you want the lowest entry point and still want wireless smartphone connectivity, a rearview camera, and a strong safety foundation. It makes the most sense if you are focused on affordability and can live without some of the extra convenience and driver-assistance features found higher up.
• Preferred: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds more speakers, satellite radio, and connected services, while also unlocking more safety equipment. It is the sweet spot if you want a better-equipped Elantra without jumping to the pricier upper trims.
• Ultimate: Choose this if you want the more premium tech experience, including the larger touchscreen, navigation, digital instrument cluster, wireless charging, and Bose audio. It suits you best if you plan to keep the car longer and want the most upscale non-sport version.
• N Line: This is the pick if you want the sportiest gas-powered Elantra, with the turbocharged engine, DCT, sport-tuned suspension, larger brakes, and unique interior and exterior touches. It is the right choice if driving enjoyment matters more to you than maximum comfort.

Safety equipment is more complete on Preferred, Ultimate, and N Line, since Essential leaves some driver-assistance features optional.

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory and deal activity to make comparison shopping worthwhile.

• Deal availability: 33.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 645 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.38% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $18,610 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Hyundai Elantra's resale value?

The current average of $18,612 CAD sits slightly below last year's $21,242 CAD.

That decline suggests the market has become more buyer-friendly, which can put some pressure on future resale values if you plan to sell soon. For you as a seller, it means pricing competitively will matter more than it did a year ago.

At the same time, the Elantra’s strong value reputation and broad appeal should help it remain easy to shop in the used market. Well-equipped examples with desirable features are likely to hold attention better than stripped-down versions.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Hyundai Elantra safe?

The 2022 Hyundai Elantra earns five-star ratings overall from NHTSA, with four-star ratings for front crash protection and five-star ratings for side crash protection and rollover resistance. The IIHS also gives it top Good ratings in all six of its individual crash tests.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Hyundai’s standard safety equipment includes automatic emergency braking, while the broader driver-assistance suite adds forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assistance, lane-departure warning, lane-centring assistance, automatic high beams, and driver attention alert. Blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert and Safe Exit Warning are standard on all but Essential, and higher trims can add intersection turn assistance, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, rear automatic braking, and Highway Drive Assist.

One caveat is that lower-level trims with halogen headlights receive a Marginal IIHS headlight rating, while LED-equipped versions score Good.

Should I buy a 2022 Hyundai Elantra or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 33.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.38% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It combines strong value, excellent fuel economy, and a broad safety feature set.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $17,565 CAD, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $18,612 CAD average.
• It emphasises style, space, and refinement for buyers wanting a more polished compact sedan.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $20,893 CAD, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $18,612 CAD average.
• It broadens the lineup with more choices, including a hybrid and sportier options.

The bottom line: The 2022 is the best all-around pick if you want a strong mix of value, safety, and efficiency at a softened used price. If your priority is saving money, the 2021 is the better budget route; if you want more choice and are willing to pay more, the 2023 is worth a look.
