Is the 2022 Hyundai Elantra a good car?

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about outright durability and more about choosing a trim that matches your comfort expectations and feature needs.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Hyundai Elantra?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Essential is the simplest version, while Preferred, Ultimate, and N Line add more equipment and a more upscale feel. The base trim leaves out some of the richer convenience and safety content you get higher up the range.
• Powertrain: The standard 2.0-litre four-cylinder is adequate, but it can feel buzzy and short on power under hard acceleration. The N Line’s turbocharged 1.6-litre engine is the enthusiast choice, while the Hybrid is the efficiency-focused option.
• Safety package: Hyundai’s driver-assistance suite includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assistance, lane-departure warning, lane-centring assistance, automatic high beams, and driver attention alert. Blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert is not available on Essential, but it is standard on other grades.
• Infotainment: Base models get an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, HD Radio, a rearview camera, four speakers, and dual USB ports. Ultimate and N Line trims upgrade to a 10.25-inch touchscreen with navigation, a digital instrument cluster, Bose audio, and wireless device charging, but only wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto work with that larger screen.
• Fuel efficiency: Combined fuel consumption ranges from 6.7 L/100 km for the 2.0-litre engine to 7.6 L/100 km for the N Line, while the Hybrid uses 4.4 L/100 km combined.

Which 2022 Hyundai Elantra trim should I buy?

The 2022 Hyundai Elantra is offered in 4 trim levels: Essential, Preferred, Ultimate, and N Line.

Here's the short version:

• Essential: This is the value play if you want the lowest entry point and still want a strong safety and tech foundation. It gives you the core Elantra experience, but you give up some of the convenience and safety content found on higher trims.
• Preferred: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds meaningful equipment without pushing the price as high as the upper trims. It is the sweet spot if you want a more complete daily driver.
• Ultimate: Choose this if you want the most upscale mainstream Elantra experience, including the larger 10.25-inch touchscreen, navigation, Bose audio, digital instrument cluster, and wireless charging.
• N Line: Pick this if you want the sportiest gas-powered Elantra in the lineup. It adds the turbocharged engine, sport-tuned hardware, and a more engaging driving character, but the sport seats may not suit everyone on long trips.

Safety-package note: blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert is not available on Essential, but it is standard on the other trims.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Hyundai Elantra?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 33.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 648 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.38% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $18,789 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Hyundai Elantra's resale value?

The current average of $18,790 CAD sits slightly below last year's $21,445 CAD.

That softer pricing suggests the market has moved in buyers’ favour, which can make the car easier to sell competitively if you price it well. A future seller may need to be realistic about expectations, especially if the vehicle is a higher-mileage example or a lower-trim version without the more desirable equipment.

At the same time, the Elantra’s strong value story, fuel economy, and broad appeal should help it remain attractive to used shoppers. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.57/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Hyundai Elantra safe?

The 2022 Hyundai Elantra earns five-star overall crash protection from NHTSA, with four-star ratings for front crash protection and five-star ratings for side crash protection and rollover resistance.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Hyundai’s driver-assistance suite includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assistance, lane-departure warning, lane-centring assistance, automatic high beams, and driver attention alert. Blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert is not available on Essential, but it is standard on other trims. Higher trims can also add intersection turn assistance, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, rear automatic braking, and Highway Drive Assist.

The IIHS gave the Elantra top “Good” ratings in all six of its individual crash tests. Lower-level trims with halogen headlights received a “Marginal” headlight rating, while trims with LED headlights earned a “Good” rating.

Should I buy a 2022 Hyundai Elantra or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 33.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.38% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.57/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It combines a roomy cabin, strong safety tech, and standout value in a bargain-priced compact sedan.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $17,586 CAD, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $18,790 CAD average.
• It delivers a more polished compact-car experience with style, space, and sophistication.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $20,919 CAD, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $18,790 CAD average.
• It broadens the lineup with more choice, including a hybrid and a stronger tech-and-efficiency pitch.

The bottom line: The 2022 is the right pick if you want the best balance of price, safety, efficiency, and equipment. If you are especially price-sensitive, the 2021 can save you money; if you want a broader range of choices, the 2023 is worth a look.
