Is the 2022 Ford Explorer a good car?

Yes — you’re looking at a 4.92/5 user-rated SUV with an expert score of 7.5/10. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.

Owners consistently praise its comfort, practicality, and spacious interior, and they also value the cargo capacity that makes it especially appealing for families. The Explorer’s broad trim range and available equipment help it suit buyers who want anything from a value-oriented three-row SUV to a more luxurious, feature-rich option.

The Explorer’s mix of space, versatility, and available equipment makes it a strong fit if you want a three-row SUV that can handle daily family duty without feeling stripped down. It also earns a 32.7% good-or-great-deal share, which points to a market with some attractive opportunities.

Is the 2022 Ford Explorer reliable?

Owners rate it 4.92/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback points to a vehicle that feels comfortable, practical, and dependable for family use, with many owners highlighting the spacious cabin and cargo area as reasons they’d count on it over time. The overall impression is that it delivers the kind of long-term usability shoppers want from a used three-row SUV.

The expert drive notes also support that impression by describing the Explorer as robust on the road and composed enough for everyday use, with a ride that feels solid rather than skittish. Ford’s maintenance coverage can also help reduce early ownership friction on some new-vehicle purchases, though that benefit depends on how the vehicle was originally sold and serviced.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that some drivers still want more power and better warning-system behaviour, so you should pay close attention to how the vehicle’s driver-assistance systems and powertrain feel on a test drive.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Ford Explorer?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup spans six models, and the base trim gives you the Explorer’s core three-row packaging, but higher trims add more premium materials and equipment. The cabin quality can vary, so you should check whether the trim you’re considering feels suitably finished for the price.
• Powertrain: You can choose between a turbocharged 2.3-litre EcoBoost four-cylinder, an available hybrid based on a 3.3-litre V6, and a twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre V6. The hybrid is the best blend of power, efficiency, and capability if you want a balanced daily driver, while the V6 suits you if you want stronger acceleration and more towing ability.
• Safety package: Every Explorer comes with Ford Co-Pilot360, including forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic high-beam headlights. Co-Pilot360 Assist+ adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, lane-centring assist, and evasive steering assist.
• Infotainment: You’ll find either an 8-inch or 10.1-inch touchscreen with Sync 3. Higher trims can add wireless smartphone charging, a surround-view camera system, and a 14-speaker Bang and Olufsen sound system.
• Fuel efficiency: The turbocharged 2.3-litre engine uses between 10.3 and 11.8 L/100 km in combined driving, the hybrid can use as little as 9.6 L/100 km, and the twin-turbo V6 is rated at 11.8 L/100 km combined.

Which 2022 Ford Explorer trim should I buy?

The 2022 Ford Explorer is offered in 6 trim levels: XLT, ST-Line, Timberline, Limited, ST, and Platinum.

Here's the short version:

• XLT: This is the entry point and the most straightforward way to get into the Explorer lineup. It gives you the standard turbocharged 2.3-litre engine and the core family-SUV formula, so it suits you if you want the lowest-cost path into the model without chasing extras.
• ST-Line: This trim adds a sportier look to the XLT-based formula, making it a better fit if you want style without stepping into the higher-performance ST. It’s a good choice if appearance matters more to you than maximum power.
• Timberline: This is the rugged choice in the lineup, with added ground clearance and improved approach, breakover, and departure angles. If you want the Explorer’s most adventure-oriented setup, this is the trim to focus on.
• Limited: This is the best-value trim if you want the hybrid powertrain, because it combines efficiency with a strong equipment mix. It’s the one to target if you want a more balanced ownership experience.
• ST: This is the performance-focused trim, with the twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6 and the sport-tuned character to match. Choose it if acceleration and driving enjoyment matter most to you.
• Platinum: This is the luxury-oriented top trim, and it’s the one to consider if you want the most upscale Explorer experience. It also brings the most advanced tech features mentioned in the review.

Every 2022 Explorer comes standard with Ford Co-Pilot360, and Co-Pilot360 Assist+ is the safety-package upgrade to look for if you want the extra driver-assistance features.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Ford Explorer?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient and compare listings carefully.

• Deal availability: 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 544 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 13.19% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $35,510 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Ford Explorer's resale value?

The current average of $35,510 CAD sits slightly below last year's $40,907 CAD.

That softer pricing suggests the Explorer has become more accessible for used buyers, but it also means future sellers may face a more competitive market if supply stays healthy. If you buy at the right price now, you may have less downside risk than someone who paid closer to last year’s average.

The current spread between the low and high end of the market also shows that condition, trim, and equipment still matter a lot. Well-equipped examples should hold up better with shoppers who want a family-friendly three-row SUV with strong practicality.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.92/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Ford Explorer safe?

The 2022 Ford Explorer earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS.

It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.

Ford Co-Pilot360 is standard, and it includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic high-beam headlights. If you choose Co-Pilot360 Assist+, you also get adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, lane-centring assist, and evasive steering assist.

One caveat is that complete NHTSA crash-test ratings for this model year were not published in the source material, so you should rely on the IIHS result and the standard safety equipment when evaluating it.

Should I buy a 2022 Ford Explorer or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 13.19% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.92/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Ford added ST-Line and Timberline trims for this year, broadening the lineup’s appeal.

The bottom line: The 2022 Explorer is a smart pick if you want the updated trim mix, strong owner satisfaction, and a market that currently favours careful shoppers. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you may also want to compare nearby model years to see whether a similar configuration is available at a lower asking price, but the 2022 remains the better all-around target if you value the broader trim selection and softened pricing.
