What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Volvo XC60?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base T5 Momentum gives you the core XC60 experience, while higher trims add more luxury equipment and visual polish. The cabin design, materials, and exterior detailing are a major part of the appeal, and top trims can add larger wheels and more upscale presentation.
• Powertrain: You get a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with an 8-speed automatic, and all-wheel drive is standard in Canada. T5 models use turbocharging, T6 models add a supercharger, and T8 models add an electric motor for plug-in hybrid driving.
• Safety package: Volvo’s safety suite includes blind-spot monitoring with steering assist, rear cross-traffic alert with automatic emergency braking, collision avoidance, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping aid, run-off road protection and mitigation, oncoming mitigation, and a rear park assist camera. Pilot Assist is available, and some advanced features may not be on every trim.
• Infotainment: The XC60 uses Volvo’s Sensus system with a 9-inch portrait-style touchscreen. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are built in, and the interface can feel intuitive once you learn it, though it has a learning curve.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada figures range from 11.1 L/100 km city, 8.3 L/100 km highway, and 9.9 L/100 km combined for the T5 to 9.3 L/100 km combined for the T8 PHEV, with 4.0 Le/100 km combined in electric-only mode.

Which 2021 Volvo XC60 trim should I buy?

The 2021 Volvo XC60 is offered in 6 trim levels: T5 Momentum, T6, R-Design, Inscription, XC60 Recharge T8 eAWD Inscription Expression, XC60 Recharge T8 eAWD R-Design, and XC60 T8 eAWD Polestar Engineered.

Here's the short version:

• T5 Momentum: This is the entry point and the best-value choice if you want the XC60’s core strengths without stretching the budget. It gives you the standard luxury feel, strong safety equipment, and the clean Scandinavian design that defines the model.
• T6: This trim is the straightforward step up if you want more power without moving into the plug-in hybrid side of the lineup. It suits you if you want a stronger performance feel while staying within the conventional gas-powered range.
• R-Design: This is the better pick if you want a sportier look and a more expressive personality. It adds a more performance-flavoured appearance and sits above the mainstream trims for buyers who care about style.
• Inscription: This is the trim to choose if comfort and a more upscale cabin matter most. It leans into the XC60’s luxury character and is a strong fit if you want the most polished non-hybrid version.
• XC60 Recharge T8 eAWD Inscription Expression: This is the plug-in hybrid entry point for buyers who want electric driving capability and premium efficiency. It makes sense if you can charge regularly and want the added flexibility of PHEV operation.
• XC60 Recharge T8 eAWD R-Design: This is the better plug-in hybrid choice if you want the efficiency of the T8 with a sportier presentation. It suits you if you want both style and electrified performance.
• XC60 T8 eAWD Polestar Engineered: This is the most potent and most distinctive version, aimed at buyers who want the strongest performance and the most exclusive feel in the lineup.

Volvo’s safety package is a major strength across the range, and the XC60’s standard equipment makes even the lower trims feel well protected.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Volvo XC60?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you should have room to compare listings and wait for the right example.

• Deal availability: 28.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 150 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 18.26% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $30,203 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Volvo XC60's resale value?

The current average of $30,232 CAD sits slightly below last year's $36,986 CAD.

That price movement suggests the XC60 has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can be helpful if you’re buying now but less favourable if you’re planning to sell soon. For a future seller, the current market indicates that resale values may remain sensitive to condition, trim, and equipment level rather than rising quickly on their own.

Because the model still carries strong safety credentials and broad owner approval, well-kept examples should continue to attract interest. Higher-spec trims and clean service histories are likely to hold buyer attention better than neglected or lightly equipped examples.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Volvo XC60 safe?

The 2021 Volvo XC60 was awarded a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and the XC60 T5 AWD and XC60 T6 AWD received five-star ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes LED headlights, blind-spot monitoring with steering assist, rear cross-traffic alert with automatic emergency braking, collision avoidance, low- and high-speed collision mitigation, vehicle/cyclist/large animal detection, driver alert control, run-off road protection, run-off road mitigation, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping aid, oncoming mitigation, front, side, and curtain airbags with driver-side knee airbag, whiplash protection system in front seats, slippery road/hazard light alert, rear park assist camera, and power child locks on the rear doors.

Pilot Assist is available and combines adaptive cruise control with lane-keeping assist to help maintain speed and position. The main caveat is that some of the most advanced driver-assistance features are not universal across every trim.

Should I buy a 2021 Volvo XC60 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 28.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 18.26% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It combines luxury-level appointments, exceptional safety, and a practical everyday focus.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $34,664 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $30,232 CAD average.
• It adds new powertrains and an Android-based infotainment system.

The bottom line: If you want the better value proposition, the 2021 is the smarter buy because it delivers the XC60’s core strengths at a lower average price. If you’re willing to spend more for newer tech and updated powertrains, the 2022 is the better path.
