Why it stands out
The 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan stands out as a compact SUV that leans more towards comfort and practicality than flash. It offers a spacious interior, easy-to-use controls, and plenty of safety technology, which helps explain why it appeals to family buyers. It is also a good deal if you can find a well-looked-after example at the right price, and the second-generation Tiguan in particular is described as a decent value with the flexibility of a seven-seat layout.
What makes this generation distinctive is its size and packaging. The North American Tiguan introduced for 2018 was more than 26 centimetres longer than the first-generation model, and that extra length allowed for a seven-seat configuration as the default layout. It also came with a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with 184 horsepower, an eight-speed automatic transmission, and front-wheel drive as standard, while 4Motion all-wheel drive was standard on all other trims. Inside, it was more modern than before, with a sharp-edged design and either a 6.5-inch or eight-inch touchscreen depending on trim level.
There are some trade-offs, though. The second-generation Tiguan had a less responsive driving experience than the first, even if it still felt solid and reassuring from behind the wheel. Reliability is another concern, with reports of engine and electric troubles as well as infotainment system glitches. For buyers who value space, comfort, and everyday usefulness over outright performance, the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan remains an appealing choice.

We bought this vehicle for our daughter. It is loaded inside and out. She and I did our research on the VW Tiguan. It is technically on par with every high in car on the market. The panoramic sunroof was a must have for her. Our daughter took the test herself. The ease of handling, acceleration and braking were excellent. Before we returned to the dealership we knew this was the right vehicle for her!

Solid SUV - big enough for family, small enough to get decent gas mileage for an AWD. Base model comes with enough features to leave the competition out of the game for similar SUVs.

Despite the what I read about the sluggishness of this model, its STILL a VW (a little speed demon once it gets going). I love all the features of my car (Panoramic sunroof, car play, LCD odometer area, heated seats). I believe I got GREAT VALUE out of this car! No complaints!!!!

How much does the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $21,575 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $21,575 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $25,653 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $25,650 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −15.89% |
Prices have softened 15.89% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 548 listings available, which suggests you should have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan a good car?
Yes — the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan earns a 4.5/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Drivers consistently praise its comfort, safety features, and practicality, and many also like its spacious interior and good fuel economy. That makes it a sensible fit if you want a family-friendly compact SUV that focuses on everyday usefulness rather than flash. With 29.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, you may find worthwhile options if you shop carefully.
Is the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback highlights a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience for many drivers, especially those who value comfort and practicality over excitement. The strongest themes are long-term usefulness, solid everyday livability, and a vehicle you can count on for family duties. For used buyers, the main ownership risk is that a well-kept example matters more here than a bargain-priced one with unresolved issues.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you focus on well-priced examples.
- Deal availability: 29.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 548 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 15.89% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $21,575 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan's resale value?
The current average of $21,575 CAD sits slightly below last year's $25,650 CAD.
That price movement suggests the Tiguan has become more affordable for buyers, which can also mean future sellers may need to price competitively to stand out. If you buy at today’s average or below, you may have less room for appreciation, but you could still benefit from steady demand if the vehicle is well maintained. The model’s family-friendly appeal and broad usefulness should help support interest when it comes time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 29.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 15.89% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $25,347 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $21,575 CAD average.
- It adds a light refresh and new safety technology.
The bottom line:
The 2021 is the better starting point if you want the strongest value and are shopping with price in mind. If you want a newer version with a bit more polish and can stretch your budget, the 2022 is the more appealing upgrade path.
