What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Toyota Tacoma?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Tacoma’s trim walk includes SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Sport Premium, TRD Off Road, TRD Off Road Premium, and TRD Pro. The base truck is simpler, while higher trims add more distinctive styling and more off-road hardware. The TRD Pro is the most off-road focused model, so it suits you best if trail use matters more than comfort or luxury.
• Powertrain: All Canadian Tacoma models use a 3.5-litre V6 with variable valve timing, and you can get either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. The part-time 4WD system includes low range, and the truck’s efficiency varies depending on transmission and trim.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control. The package is solid, but some rivals offer extra features such as blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.
• Infotainment: The base truck gets a 7-inch touchscreen, while other trims get an 8-inch screen. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth are standard, and SiriusXM satellite radio is included on every trim except the base model. Wireless smartphone integration and over-the-air capability are not mentioned.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada rates the automatic 4WD V6 at 13.0 L/100 km in city driving, 10.5 L/100 km on the highway, and 11.8 L/100 km combined. With the manual, those figures rise to 13.8, 11.4, and 12.7 L/100 km, and TRD Off Road and TRD Pro versions are rated at 13.8/11.7/12.9 L/100 km.

Which 2021 Toyota Tacoma trim should I buy?

The 2021 Toyota Tacoma is offered in 6 trim levels: SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Sport Premium, TRD Off Road, TRD Off Road Premium, TRD Pro.

Here's the short version:

• SR5: This is the entry point if you want the Tacoma’s core toughness without paying for extra equipment. It makes sense if you value the truck’s basic capability and want to keep your purchase price lower.
• TRD Sport: This trim adds a more distinctive look and sits in the middle of the range, making it a sensible step up if you want more presence without going all the way to the off-road-focused models.
• TRD Sport Premium: Choose this if you want the Sport trim’s appearance and a more upscale feature set. It’s a better fit if you want a more complete daily driver without moving into the hardcore off-road side of the lineup.
• TRD Off Road: This is the best-value trim for many buyers because it adds the hardware that matters most if you plan to leave pavement behind. It gets the locking rear differential, upgraded suspension with Bilstein shock absorbers, Multi-Terrain Select, and Crawl Control.
• TRD Off Road Premium: Pick this if you want the off-road equipment of the TRD Off Road with a more feature-rich setup. It suits you if trail ability matters, but you also want a more comfortable or better-equipped truck.
• TRD Pro: This is the most off-road focused Tacoma. It adds Fox internal-bypass shocks, a 1-inch front lift, retuned rear suspension with progressive-rate leaf springs, and a front skid plate, so it’s the one to buy if off-road performance is your priority.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard across the lineup.

• Deal availability: 24.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 224 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.57% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $42,684 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Toyota Tacoma's resale value?

The current average of $43,187 CAD sits slightly below last year's $45,733 CAD.

That softer pricing can help you buy more selectively now, but it also suggests the market has already adjusted downward from a stronger level. If you plan to sell later, the Tacoma’s current pricing trend shows that values can move with broader market conditions, even for a model with a strong reputation. The truck’s durability and loyal following should still help support demand over time.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.9/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Headlight performance varies by trim, with a mix of “Good” and “Marginal” ratings depending on the version you choose. That means you should pay close attention to trim selection if safety equipment and lighting performance matter to you.

Should I buy a 2021 Toyota Tacoma or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 24.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.57% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.9/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds two new special editions and standard dual-zone automatic climate control.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $40,143 CAD, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $43,187 CAD average.
• It brings useful design and technology updates while keeping the Tacoma’s rugged identity.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $43,511 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $43,187 CAD average.
• It adds modern tech and safety while staying practical for commuting and weekend adventures.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, availability, and the Tacoma’s proven formula, the 2021 is the sensible pick. If you’re shopping on a tighter budget, the 2020 is worth a look; if you want a slightly newer take and can spend more, the 2022 is the cleaner upgrade path.
