What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base SE trim gets a more modest interior presentation, while the XSE adds a larger 9.0-inch screen and is the trim tied to available premium tech features. The Prime’s cabin is functional, but material quality is a common complaint, so pay close attention to interior wear and whether the equipment level matches your expectations.
• Powertrain: You get a 2.5-litre Atkinson-cycle 4-cylinder engine paired with Toyota’s hybrid system and a rear electric motor for AWD. The Prime is tuned for strong output, quick acceleration, and smooth transitions between gasoline and electric power.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard, including pre-collision system with cyclist and pedestrian detection, lane-departure alert with steering assist, lane-tracing assist, dynamic radar cruise control, and automatic high beams. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and eight airbags are standard too.
• Infotainment: The SE uses an 8.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The XSE gets a 9.0-inch screen, and a head-up display and video rearview mirror are available on the Prime.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada says it has an electric range of 68 kilometres and an efficiency rating of 2.5 litres-equivalent per 100 kilometres combined. It also comes standard with a 6.6-kilowatt onboard charger in Canada.

Which 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime trim should I buy?

The 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime is offered in 2 trim levels: SE and XSE.

Here's the short version:

• SE: This is the entry point, but it still gives you the core Prime experience, including the plug-in hybrid powertrain, standard all-wheel drive, Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, and an 8.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It makes the most sense if you want the Prime’s efficiency and performance without paying for extra tech.
• XSE: This is the better-equipped choice, with a 9.0-inch touchscreen and access to features like the head-up display, video rearview mirror, and Premium Technology Package. If you want the most complete version of the Prime and are willing to pay more, this is the one to target.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard across the range, so you do not need to move up a trim for the core driver-assistance suite.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.

• Deal availability: 28.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 50 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.91% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $36,546 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime's resale value?

The current average of $36,546 CAD sits slightly below last year's $41,488 CAD.

That softer pricing can help you buy in at a more favourable point, but it also means future resale values may depend heavily on how well the market absorbs plug-in hybrid inventory. If demand stays steady, the Prime’s combination of performance, efficiency, and utility should help it remain appealing to used buyers.

Because the model has strong owner satisfaction and broad practical appeal, it should continue to attract interest when it’s time to sell.

Is the 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime safe?

The 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime received a Top Safety Pick rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, missing out on Top Safety Pick+ because of poorly rated headlights on some trims.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 comes standard and includes a pre-collision system with cyclist and pedestrian detection, lane-departure alert with steering assist, lane-tracing assist, dynamic radar cruise control, and automatic high beams. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and eight airbags are standard as well.

One caveat is that lane-tracing assist does not work as well as similar systems from some other manufacturers, and the headlight issue kept it from the higher IIHS award.

Should I buy a 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 28.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.91% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.21/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2021 introduced Toyota’s plug-in hybrid RAV4 with strong electric range and quick acceleration.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $42,232 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $36,546 CAD average.
• It adds a longer total driving range between fuel or charging stops.

The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2021 is the smarter buy because pricing has eased and the core Prime formula is already strong. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer model year, the 2022 is worth a look for buyers who prioritise maximum flexibility.
