Is the 2021 Toyota Corolla a good car?

Generally — you’re looking at a 4.43/5 user-rated car with an expert score of 7.83/10. The model scores 9/10 across Technology and Safety.

The owner feedback repeatedly points to reliability, and the expert commentary reinforces that this Corolla has a reputation for being dependable, trouble-free, and easy to count on over the long term. Toyota also frames it as a car with bulletproof reliability, which is exactly the kind of reputation used buyers tend to value.

For a used buyer, the main ownership risk is less about mechanical drama and more about finding one that has been cared for properly, since a strong reputation does not replace a good service history.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Toyota Corolla?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The SE and XSE bring sport-design bumpers, a mesh grille insert, a matching diffuser panel, a subtle body kit, a twin-outlet exhaust, and 18-inch aluminium wheels, while the base-oriented trims are more anonymous. If you want the best-value balance of style and equipment, the SE is the trim to focus on.
• Powertrain: The SE and XSE use a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with 169 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque, paired with a Dynamic Shift CVT, paddle shifters, and a Sport driving mode. The SE also offers a six-speed manual gearbox with downshift rev-matching.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, cyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, lane-centring assistance, and automatic high-beam headlights. Rear side-impact airbags are also standard, and the available blind-spot warning system adds rear cross-traffic alert.
• Infotainment: Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and Bluetooth are standard. The SE gets an 8-inch touchscreen instead of the standard 7-inch display, while the XSE adds Service Connect, Remote Connect, SiriusXM, navigation, and Destination Assist.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada says the Corolla XSE should use 7.0 litres per 100 kilometres in combined driving, with 7.7 L/100 km in the city and 6.1 L/100 km on the highway.

Which 2021 Toyota Corolla trim should I buy?

The 2021 Toyota Corolla is offered in 4 trim levels: L, LE, SE, and XSE.

Here's the short version:

• L: This is the simplest path into the Corolla, and it suits you if you want the lowest-frills version of Toyota’s dependable compact car.
• LE: This is the sensible everyday choice if you want a more complete feature set without moving into the sportier, pricier trims.
• SE: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the sportier look, the larger 8-inch touchscreen, and the option of a manual transmission.
• XSE: This is the most upscale and feature-rich gas Corolla here, with the strongest mix of style, equipment, and connected services.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard across the range, so you’re not giving up the core safety package by choosing a lower trim.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Toyota Corolla?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without feeling rushed.

• Deal availability: 32.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 567 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.00% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $20,921 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Toyota Corolla's resale value?

The current average of $20,921 CAD sits slightly below last year's $22,496 CAD.

That price movement suggests the Corolla has become a bit more buyer-friendly in the near term, which can make it easier for you to enter the market now. For a future seller, the softer current pricing means there is less room for immediate upside, but the Corolla’s broad appeal should still help support demand when it’s time to sell.

Because this model year has strong owner satisfaction and a reputation for reliability, it should remain attractive to used-car shoppers over time. That kind of reputation usually helps cushion resale value even when the market cools.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.43/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Toyota Corolla safe?

The 2021 Corolla earns a Top Safety Pick rating from the IIHS, and the NHTSA gave the 2020 Corolla its top five-star overall rating.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard, and it brings adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, cyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, lane-centring assistance, and automatic high-beam headlights. Rear side-impact airbags are also standard for this model year, and the available blind-spot warning system gains rear cross-traffic alert.

One caveat is that Toyota says the added airbags mean the 2021 model needed fresh crash testing before new ratings could be assigned, so you should pay attention to the exact equipment on any used example you’re considering.

Should I buy a 2021 Toyota Corolla or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 32.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.00% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.43/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It adds a more engaging personality, especially in SE and XSE form, while keeping the Corolla’s efficiency and reliability focus.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $19,638 CAD, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $20,921 CAD average.
• It introduced the redesigned Corolla’s more stylish, more enjoyable character.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $22,264 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $20,921 CAD average.
• It adds two new colours and keeps the Corolla’s broad range of body styles, transmissions, and powertrains.

The bottom line: If you want the best mix of value, features, and personality, the 2021 is the sweet spot to target. If your priority is saving money, the 2020 is the better budget play, while the 2022 makes sense if you specifically want the newer model-year pricing and colour updates.
