Is the 2021 Toyota 4Runner a good car?

Yes — the 2021 Toyota 4Runner earns a 4.8/5 user rating and a 6.2/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Form and function at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise the rugged durability, spacious interior, off-road capability, and convenient technologies like adaptive cruise control and Apple CarPlay. That lines up with the 4Runner’s purpose-built, utility-first character, especially if you want a tough SUV that feels at home on rough terrain and still works for family use. The model’s strong deal availability also helps if you’re shopping the used market.

Owner feedback points to rugged durability, reliability, and a vehicle that feels like a solid long-term investment. Toyota’s maintenance-friendly ownership story adds to that appeal, and the model’s reputation for lasting value is a major part of why shoppers consider it.

For used buyers, the main ownership risk is that durability comes with trade-offs in fuel use and everyday refinement.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Toyota 4Runner?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Trail trim is the most stripped-back version, with black cloth upholstery, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, no heated front seats, and an old-school cabin with manual air conditioning. Higher trims and packages add more comfort and equipment, so you should pay close attention to feature gaps if you’re comparing listings.
• Powertrain: Every 4Runner uses a 4.0-litre V6 with 270 horsepower and a five-speed automatic. It also has part-time 4WD, and the truck-like setup is part of the appeal if you want real off-road capability.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense P includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic forward emergency braking, lane departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, and pedestrian detection. Blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic warning are not included.
• Infotainment: You get an 8-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, five USB ports, and a year of Safety Connect. Packages can add navigation and Destination Assist.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada says it uses 13.8 L/100 km in combined driving and 12.5 L/100 km on the highway. The road test average was 14.0 L/100 km.

Which 2021 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?

The 2021 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 2 trim levels: Trail and SR5.

Here's the short version:

• Trail: This is the entry point, and it makes the most sense if you want the 4Runner’s core ruggedness without paying for extra trim content. It comes with the basic cabin setup, standard part-time 4WD, and the essentials that fit the model’s utility-first mission.
• SR5: This is the better-value choice if you want more flexibility, since it can be paired with TRD Off Road, Limited, Venture, Nightshade, and TRD Pro packages in Canada. Those packages add more capability or equipment, so this is the trim to focus on if you want to tailor the 4Runner to your needs.

Toyota Safety Sense P is standard, but blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic warning are not available.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Toyota 4Runner?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you should compare listings carefully and move quickly on strong examples.

• Deal availability: 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 133 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.04% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $46,808 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?

The current average of $47,221 CAD sits slightly below last year's $50,798 CAD.

That softer pricing can work in your favour if you buy now, because you may be entering at a more favourable point in the cycle. For a future seller, it also suggests there is still some room for depreciation to play out before values stabilise. Even so, the 4Runner’s reputation for durability and utility helps support demand over time.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Toyota 4Runner safe?

The 2021 Toyota 4Runner earns a Good roof crush-strength rating from IIHS, but it also gets a Marginal result for driver protection in a small overlap frontal-impact collision and a three-star rollover resistance rating from NHTSA. NHTSA also gives the front passenger a three-star rating in a frontal-impact crash.

It earns a 3/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense P is standard, and it includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic forward emergency braking, lane departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, and pedestrian detection. The system does not include blind-spot warning or rear cross-traffic warning.

The main caveat is that the crash results reflect the 4Runner’s age, so safety is not one of its strongest selling points.

Should I buy a 2021 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.04% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It balances rugged utility with modern infotainment and safety tech.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $42,927 CAD, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $47,221 CAD average.
• It is a purpose-built off-road SUV with a rough-and-ready focus.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $49,452 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $47,221 CAD average.
• It keeps the rugged formula while adding modern infotainment and safety tech.

The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of value, rugged character, and buyer satisfaction, the 2021 is the sweet spot. If your priority is spending less, the 2020 is the better price-sensitive path, while the 2022 makes sense if you want to pay more for the newer-year alternative.
