What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Subaru Crosstrek?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Outdoor trim adds water-repellant upholstery, Plasma Yellow Pearl interior accents, and simulated carbon-fibre trim, while the Limited gets 18-inch wheels and navigation. The base model is more basic, so you should check whether the features you want are present before you buy.
• Powertrain: The 2.5-litre boxer-four makes 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque and is standard on the Outdoor and Limited trims. The rest of the lineup uses the 2.0-litre boxer-four with 152 hp and 145 lb-ft, and the CVT is required on Sport and Limited.
• Safety package: Subaru’s EyeSight driver-assistance system includes adaptive cruise control with lane centring, automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning on CVT-equipped models. Automatic high beams and reverse automatic braking are included on CVT-equipped Sport and Limited grades, while lane-change assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert are offered on those trims and the Outdoor grade.
• Infotainment: The Crosstrek uses Subaru’s Starlink system with a standard 6.5-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility, and Bluetooth. Outdoor, Sport, and Limited trims get an 8-inch touchscreen, and navigation is standard on Limited.
• Fuel efficiency: The 2.5-litre engine is rated at 8.0 L/100 km combined. With the 2.0-litre engine, the Crosstrek is rated at 7.9 L/100 km combined with the CVT and 9.4 L/100 km combined with the manual transmission.

Which 2021 Subaru Crosstrek trim should I buy?

The 2021 Subaru Crosstrek is offered in 5 trim levels: Convenience, Touring, Sport, Outdoor, and Limited.

Here's the short version:

• Convenience: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the Crosstrek’s standard all-wheel drive and SUV-like packaging at the lowest cost, but you should expect the fewest extras.
• Touring: This is the sensible step up if you want a better-equipped daily driver without moving too far up the price ladder.
• Sport: This trim is a strong choice if you want the 8-inch touchscreen and more available safety tech, and it pairs well with buyers who want a more feature-rich Crosstrek without going all the way to Limited.
• Outdoor: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the 2.5-litre engine, water-repellant upholstery, and extra traction features for bad weather and light adventure use.
• Limited: Choose this if you want the most upscale Crosstrek experience, including the 18-inch wheels and navigation, along with the stronger engine.

The safety-package note to keep in mind is that the IIHS Top Safety Pick rating applies only to models with some available EyeSight driver-assist features and Steering Responsive Headlights.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Subaru Crosstrek?

This looks like a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory to compare options carefully.

• Deal availability: 23.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 213 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.76% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $23,127 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Subaru Crosstrek's resale value?

The current average of $23,249 CAD sits slightly below last year's $25,762 CAD.

That softer pricing suggests the Crosstrek has become more accessible for used buyers, but it also means future sellers may need to price competitively to stand out. The current year-round range still shows some room above the average, which can help well-equipped examples hold value better than basic ones. Strong demand for practical, fuel-efficient, all-wheel-drive vehicles should continue to support resale interest.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Subaru Crosstrek safe?

The 2021 Subaru Crosstrek earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, with five-star ratings in side crash tests and four-star ratings in frontal and rollover crash tests. The IIHS rates it Top Safety Pick with the highest good rating in all crash tests and for front-crash prevention tech.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Subaru’s EyeSight driver-assistance system includes adaptive cruise control with lane centring, automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning on CVT-equipped models. Automatic high beams and reverse automatic braking are included on CVT-equipped Sport and Limited grades, while lane-change assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert are offered on those trims and the Outdoor grade.

One caveat is that the IIHS award only applies to models with some available EyeSight driver-assist features and Steering Responsive Headlights, so you should confirm the equipment on any used example you’re considering. EyeSight’s camera placement can also be affected by windshield wipers and direct sunlight.

Should I buy a 2021 Subaru Crosstrek or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 23.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.76% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2021 model adds a new Outdoor trim, a 2.5-litre engine option, and an upgraded EyeSight driver-assistance system.

The bottom line: The 2021 Crosstrek is the right pick if you want the updated trim and powertrain mix, plus the stronger safety tech that arrived this year. If you’re mainly focused on price, a nearby model year may still make sense, but the 2021’s added equipment and softened pricing make it the better all-around choice for many used buyers.
