What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Mazda CX-5?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The GX starts with LED headlights, LED daytime running lights, rain-sensing wipers, and 17-inch wheels, while the GS adds leatherette seats, rear USB ports, a power liftgate, and auto-leveling LED headlights. The GS Comfort Package adds dual-zone automatic climate control, rear passenger air vents, keyless entry, and a power moonroof, while the Kuro Edition adds unique blacked-out styling and red leather seats. The GT brings leather-trimmed upholstery, a Bose 10-speaker audio system, LED taillights, LED fog lights, and a digital gauge display, and the Signature adds Nappa leather and genuine wood trim.
• Powertrain: The base 2.5-litre four-cylinder makes 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque, while the turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder delivers 250 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque on regular fuel. Front-wheel drive is standard on the base engine, all-wheel drive is available, and AWD is standard with the turbo engine in the Signature.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, forward collision warning, rear cross-traffic alert, forward automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, automatic high beams, lane keep assist, and a rearview camera. Available upgrades include a head-up display, reverse automatic emergency braking, driver attention monitoring, a surround-view camera system, front and rear parking sensors, and traffic sign recognition.
• Infotainment: Every CX-5 gets a 10.25-inch infotainment touch screen, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The system is controlled through Mazda’s centre-console interface, and the setup does not include quick tuning knobs.
• Fuel efficiency: The non-turbo FWD model uses 9.7 L/100 km in the city, 7.8 on the highway, and 8.8 combined. With AWD, that rises to 10.2 city, 8.2 highway, and 9.3 combined. The turbocharged AWD model uses 10.8 city, 8.7 highway, and 9.8 combined.

Which 2021 Mazda CX-5 trim should I buy?

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 is offered in 5 trim levels: GX, GS, GS with Comfort Package, GT, and Signature.

Here's the short version:

• GX: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core CX-5 experience with standard safety tech, a 10.25-inch screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and the base 2.5-litre engine. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the model, but it leaves out several comfort and convenience upgrades found higher up.
• GS: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds leatherette seats, a power liftgate, rear USB ports, and auto-leveling LED headlights without jumping to the more expensive upper trims. If you want a more polished daily driver, this is the sweet spot.
• GS with Comfort Package: Choose this if you want the GS equipment plus dual-zone automatic climate control, rear passenger air vents, keyless entry, and a power moonroof. It is the right pick if rear-seat comfort matters more to you.
• GT: This trim is the first one to bring the turbo engine into the mix, and it also adds a Bose 10-speaker audio system, leather-trimmed upholstery, LED fog lights, and a digital gauge display. It suits you if you want a stronger performance upgrade and a more upscale cabin.
• Signature: This is the most premium version, with Nappa leather, genuine wood trim, and AWD standard. It is the right choice if you want the most luxurious CX-5 experience.

The safety package is strong across the range, but the available adaptive lighting system is worth considering if you want the best headlights on the model.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Mazda CX-5?

This looks like a moderate market for selective buyers, so it pays to compare listings carefully.

• Deal availability: 30.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 452 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.93% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $25,705 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Mazda CX-5's resale value?

The current average of $25,705 CAD sits slightly below last year's $27,919 CAD.

That softer pricing suggests the CX-5 has become a bit more accessible for buyers, which can make it easier to move later if you keep it in good condition. For a future seller, the current trend points to a market that still values the model, but not at the same level it did a year ago. Well-equipped trims and clean service records should help you stand out when it is time to sell.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.79/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Mazda CX-5 safe?

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 has been named a Top Safety Pick+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and it earns five-star ratings from NHTSA.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, forward collision warning, rear cross-traffic alert, forward automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, automatic high beams, lane keep assist, and a rearview camera. You can also add a head-up display, reverse automatic emergency braking, driver attention monitoring, a surround-view camera system, front and rear parking sensors, and traffic sign recognition.

One caveat is that the available adaptive lighting system is worth seeking out if you want the best headlights on the model, and traffic sign recognition can be slow to display the correct speed.

Should I buy a 2021 Mazda CX-5 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 30.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.93% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.79/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Mazda added tech updates, discontinued the diesel engine, and introduced the Kuro Edition for Canadian buyers.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $23,129 CAD, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $25,705 CAD average.
• It leans into premium feel, stylish design, and fun-to-drive character.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $28,209 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $25,705 CAD average.
• It pushes further into premium territory with stronger emphasis on design and engineering.

The bottom line: The 2021 is the best all-around pick if you want the updated tech, strong safety, and broad trim range without paying the 2022 premium. If your budget is tighter, the 2020 can still make sense, but the 2021 is the more balanced buy for most shoppers.
