What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Mazda CX-5?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base CX-5 GX comes with automatic on/off LED headlights, LED daytime running lights, 17-inch grey metallic aluminium alloy wheels, a rear roof spoiler, rear privacy glass, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. The higher-tier GS adds leatherette seats, rear USB ports, a six-speaker sound system, a power liftgate, auto-dimming rearview mirror, dual heated exterior mirrors, power-adjustable front seats, and auto-levelling LED headlights. The GT adds leather-trimmed upholstery, a Bose 10-speaker premium audio system, LED taillights, LED fog lights, a 7-inch digital gauge display, and SiriusXM. The Signature adds Caturra Brown Nappa leather seats, genuine wood trim, a frameless auto-dimming rearview mirror, a black headliner, and 19-inch gunmetal aluminium alloy wheels.
• Powertrain: The base engine is a naturally aspirated Skyactiv-G 2.5-litre four-cylinder with 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard and all-wheel drive is available. Higher trims can be had with a 250-hp turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder that delivers 320 lb-ft of torque on regular fuel, and AWD is standard on the Signature.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, forward collision warning, rear cross-traffic alert, forward automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, automatic high beams, lane keep assist, and a rearview camera. Available upgrades include a head-up display, reverse automatic emergency braking, driver attention monitoring, a surround-view camera system, front and rear parking sensors, and traffic sign recognition. The traffic sign recognition system can be slow and incomplete.
• Infotainment: Every CX-5 gets a 10.25-inch infotainment touch screen, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The system is easy to look at but can be awkward to use through the centre-console controller.
• Fuel efficiency: The non-turbo FWD model uses 9.7 L/100 km in the city, 7.8 on the highway, and 8.8 combined. With AWD, that rises to 10.2 city, 8.2 highway, and 9.3 combined. The turbocharged AWD version uses 10.8 city, 8.7 highway, and 9.8 combined.

Which 2021 Mazda CX-5 trim should I buy?

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 is offered in 5 trim levels: GX, GS, Kuro Edition, GT, Signature.

Here's the short version:

• GX: This is the entry point, but it still gives you a strong safety and convenience baseline, including LED lighting, rain-sensing wipers, and the standard 10.25-inch screen. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the CX-5 without giving up the core experience.
• GS: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds a more upscale cabin, power liftgate, heated mirrors, power-adjustable seats, and rear USB ports. If you want the sweet spot between price and equipment, this is the one to focus on.
• Kuro Edition: This is the style-focused choice, adding Polymetal Grey paint, gloss black exterior details, black wheels, and a red-and-black interior treatment. Choose it if appearance matters most and you want a more distinctive look.
• GT: This trim brings a more premium feel with leather-trimmed upholstery, the Bose audio system, LED fog lights and taillights, plus the digital gauge display and SiriusXM. It suits you if you want a noticeable step up in comfort and tech.
• Signature: This is the most luxurious version, with Nappa leather, genuine wood trim, and the richest interior presentation in the lineup. It is the right pick if you want the most premium CX-5 experience and are willing to pay for it.

The available safety upgrades are worth considering on higher trims, especially if you want the most complete driver-assistance setup.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Mazda CX-5?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile options.

• Deal availability: 30.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 457 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.68% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $25,339 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Mazda CX-5's resale value?

The current average of $25,401 CAD sits slightly below last year's $27,514 CAD.

That softer pricing trend suggests the CX-5 has become a little easier to buy than it was a year ago, which can help you as a shopper today. For a future seller, it means you may not see the same level of price strength unless market conditions improve. Even so, the model’s strong owner satisfaction and premium reputation should help support demand when it is time to resell.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Mazda CX-5 safe?

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 has been named a Top Safety Pick+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and it earns five-star ratings from NHTSA.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Mazda equips the CX-5 with adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, forward collision warning, rear cross-traffic alert, forward automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, automatic high beams, lane keep assist, and a rearview camera. You can also add a head-up display, reverse automatic emergency braking, driver attention monitoring, a surround-view camera system, front and rear parking sensors, and traffic sign recognition. The main caveat is that the traffic sign recognition system can be slow and sometimes misses information, and buyers who want the best headlights should look for the adaptive lighting system.

Should I buy a 2021 Mazda CX-5 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 30.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.68% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Mazda added enhanced technology and a new Kuro Edition for Canadian buyers.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $23,033 CAD, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $25,401 CAD average.
• It offers a more premium feel with stylish design and a fun-to-drive character.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $27,827 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $25,401 CAD average.
• It brings more upscale updates and stronger premium appeal, especially in turbocharged form.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, features, and current inventory, the 2021 is the primary path to consider. If you are more price-sensitive, the 2020 can save you money while keeping much of the CX-5’s premium character.
