What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Mazda CX-5?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base GX comes with LED headlights, LED daytime running lights, 17-inch wheels, a rear roof spoiler, rear privacy glass, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. The GS adds leatherette seats, rear USB ports, a six-speaker sound system, a power liftgate, and auto-leveling LED headlights, while the Kuro Edition layers on black exterior accents and red leather seats. The GT adds leather-trimmed upholstery, a Bose 10-speaker audio system, LED taillights, LED fog lights, a digital gauge display, and SiriusXM, while the Signature adds Nappa leather and genuine wood trim.
• Powertrain: The base engine is a naturally aspirated 2.5-litre four-cylinder with 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive is standard on lower trims, while all-wheel drive is available. Higher trims can be had with a 250-hp turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder, and the turbo version is the one to choose if you want the strongest performance.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, forward collision warning, rear cross-traffic alert, forward automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, automatic high beams, lane keep assist, and a rearview camera. Available upgrades include a head-up display, reverse automatic emergency braking, driver attention monitoring, a surround-view camera system, front and rear parking sensors, and traffic sign recognition. The best headlights are tied to the adaptive lighting system.
• Infotainment: Every CX-5 gets a 10.25-inch infotainment touch screen, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The system is controlled through Mazda’s interface and can feel dated compared with newer rivals.
• Fuel efficiency: The non-turbo FWD model uses 9.7 L/100 km in the city, 7.8 on the highway, and 8.8 combined. With AWD, that rises to 10.2 city, 8.2 highway, and 9.3 combined. The turbo AWD version uses 10.8 city, 8.7 highway, and 9.8 combined.

Which 2021 Mazda CX-5 trim should I buy?

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 is offered in 5 trim levels: GX, GS, Kuro Edition, GT, Signature.

Here's the short version:

• GX: This is the entry point, but it still gives you a strong standard safety and tech package, including the 10.25-inch screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and the core driver-assistance features. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the CX-5 without giving up the essentials.
• GS: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds leatherette seats, rear USB ports, a better audio system, a power liftgate, and auto-leveling LED headlights. If you want the sweet spot between price and equipment, this is the one to focus on.
• Kuro Edition: This trim builds on the GS with distinctive styling touches, red leather seats, and black exterior accents. It suits you if appearance and cabin ambience matter as much as equipment.
• GT: This trim adds leather-trimmed upholstery, a Bose premium audio system, LED lighting upgrades, a digital gauge display, and SiriusXM. It is the better pick if you want a more upscale feel without going all the way to the top.
• Signature: This is the most premium version, with Nappa leather, genuine wood trim, and the richest cabin presentation. Choose it if you want the most luxurious CX-5 experience.

The available safety upgrades are worth considering on higher trims, especially if you want the head-up display, surround-view camera system, or adaptive lighting.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Mazda CX-5?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it pays to compare listings carefully and move quickly on strong examples.

• Deal availability: 32.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 439 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.92% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $25,236 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Mazda CX-5's resale value?

The current average of $25,236 CAD sits slightly below last year's $27,406 CAD.

That price movement suggests the CX-5 has become a bit more accessible for buyers, which can help demand in the near term. For a future seller, it also means you may need to price competitively if you want to stand out against the current market.

The good news is that the CX-5’s premium feel and strong owner satisfaction help support long-term interest. If the vehicle is well maintained and equipped with desirable features, it should remain appealing to used buyers.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Mazda CX-5 safe?

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 has been named a Top Safety Pick+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and it earns five-star ratings from NHTSA.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, forward collision warning, rear cross-traffic alert, forward automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, automatic high beams, lane keep assist, and a rearview camera. Available upgrades include a head-up display, reverse automatic emergency braking, driver attention monitoring, a surround-view camera system, front and rear parking sensors, and traffic sign recognition.

One caveat is that the best headlights require an upgrade to the adaptive lighting system, and traffic sign recognition can be slow and inconsistent.

Should I buy a 2021 Mazda CX-5 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 32.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.92% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Mazda added a new Kuro Edition and improved the model’s technology.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $22,850 CAD, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $25,236 CAD average.
• It offers a premium feel with a comfortable cabin and strong owner praise.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $27,669 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $25,236 CAD average.
• It pushes the CX-5 further toward premium territory with broader upscale appeal.

The bottom line: The 2021 is the right pick if you want the updated CX-5 with strong safety, good value, and broad appeal. If price is your top priority, the 2020 is the better bargain, while the 2022 makes sense if you want the newer premium direction and can stretch your budget.
