What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Kia Seltos?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The LX is the entry point and the only trim offered with both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive in Canada. It includes 16-inch steel wheels, manually adjustable heated front seats, remote keyless entry, power windows with a one-touch-down driver’s window, and an 8-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The EX adds 17-inch machine-finish alloy wheels, solar glass front windows, a sunroof with power sunshade, LED interior lighting, automatic climate control, and full leatherette upholstery. EX Premium adds the larger 10.25-inch touchscreen, SiriusXM satellite radio, a wireless phone charger, LED headlights and fog lamps, heated rear seats, ventilated front seats, and ambient lighting. SX Turbo adds the more powerful engine, 18-inch alloy wheels, an upgraded audio system, and additional driver-assistance features.
• Powertrain: The LX, EX, and EX Premium use a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with 146 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque, paired with a CVT and either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The SX Turbo uses a turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder with 175 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque, a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic, and standard AWD. The base engine is fine around town, but it can feel short on power at higher speeds.
• Safety package: The base LX includes blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a feature that can detect whether it is safe to exit the vehicle when parallel parking on the street. All trims but the base LX include collision avoidance assist with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, and lane-keep assist. EX Premium and SX Turbo add adaptive cruise control with idle stop-and-go.
• Infotainment: The LX and EX come with an 8-inch touchscreen and a 3.5-inch TFT digital screen in the instrument panel. EX Premium and SX Turbo upgrade to a 10.25-inch touchscreen and a 7-inch digital display screen in the instrument panel. The larger screen can show Apple CarPlay and Android Auto while still leaving room for radio, climate, or navigation data. SX Turbo also adds a Bose premium sound system.
• Fuel efficiency: The base 2.0-litre engine with front-wheel drive is rated at 8.2 L/100 km in the city, 7.1 L/100 km on the highway, and 7.7 L/100 km combined. With all-wheel drive, that engine is rated at 8.8 L/100 km city, 7.6 L/100 km highway, and 8.2 L/100 km combined. The 1.6-litre AWD test car is rated at 9.4 L/100 km city, 7.9 L/100 km highway, and 8.7 L/100 km combined.

Which 2021 Kia Seltos trim should I buy?

The 2021 Kia Seltos is offered in 4 trim levels: LX, EX, EX Premium, and SX Turbo.

Here's the short version:

• LX: This is the value-focused starting point, and it already gives you heated front seats, remote keyless entry, an 8-inch touchscreen, and core smartphone connectivity. It’s the trim to consider if you want the lowest entry price and can live without the bigger screens and extra comfort features.
• EX: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds a sunroof, automatic climate control, leatherette upholstery, and nicer exterior details without jumping all the way to the top end.
• EX Premium: This is the sweet spot if you want the more modern tech experience, thanks to the 10.25-inch touchscreen, wireless phone charger, heated rear seats, ventilated front seats, LED headlights and fog lamps, and ambient lighting.
• SX Turbo: This is the one to choose if you want the strongest engine, standard AWD, the upgraded audio system, and the most complete feature set.

The base LX gets blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, while all trims above it add the full driver-assistance suite.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Kia Seltos?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile options.

• Deal availability: 26.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 303 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.59% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $19,221 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Kia Seltos's resale value?

The current average of $19,221 CAD sits slightly below last year's $21,742 CAD.

That softer pricing can help you as a buyer now, but it also means a future seller may need to price competitively to stand out. If you buy at the current average or below, you may have a better chance of limiting depreciation pressure later. The strongest resale candidates will likely be the better-equipped trims with the features shoppers want most.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Kia Seltos safe?

The Seltos earns a Top Safety Pick rating from the IIHS and a four-star overall safety rating from NHTSA, including four-star ratings for frontal crash and rollover performance and five-star ratings for side impacts.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The Seltos comes standard with front- and side-impact airbags, electronic stability control, a tire pressure monitoring system, and child-seat anchor latches for the rear seats. In Canada, the base LX also includes blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a feature that can detect whether it is safe to exit the vehicle when parallel parking on the street. All trims but the base LX include collision avoidance assist with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, and lane-keep assist. EX Premium and SX Turbo add adaptive cruise control with idle stop-and-go.

The main caveat is that some driver-assistance features are not standard on the base trim, and the IIHS notes deductions for headlights on some trims and ease of use in the LATCH system.

Should I buy a 2021 Kia Seltos or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 26.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.59% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2021 stands out for its high-quality cabin, latest infotainment and safety technologies, and above-average driving dynamics.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $21,256 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $19,221 CAD average.
• It adds a practical, easy-to-recommend small-crossover formula with a strong warranty and straightforward technology.

The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2021 is the stronger buy because prices are softer and owner satisfaction is high. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer model year, the 2022 is worth a look, but price-sensitive buyers should focus on the 2021.

How does the 2021 Kia Seltos compare to the 2021 Hyundai Kona?
