CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Hyundai Sonata
overall

Summary
With 53 currently listed for sale and an average price of $18,975 CAD, 32.1% of 2021 Hyundai Sonata listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Hyundai Sonata 4.75 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.5 / 10.
Why it stands out
The 2021 Hyundai Sonata stands out as a credible choice for drivers who still want a sedan that is fun to drive. It is presented as a car for people who value on-pavement performance but still need passenger and cargo practicality, which gives it a clear identity in a shrinking car market where traditional sport sedans are increasingly rare.
What makes it especially appealing is the way it combines performance and practicality in a midsize package at a bargain price. That balance is the Sonata’s main draw: it aims to satisfy enthusiasts without giving up the everyday usefulness buyers expect from a family sedan.
Owner feedback broadly supports that appeal, with drivers praising its smooth driving experience, safety features, strong fuel economy, stylish design, and excellent powertrain warranty. The main drawbacks mentioned are cabin noise and some frustration with optional features that require an upgrade to unlock full functionality.

The 2021 Sonata is a great car. The car’s features with the dashboard design, bose speakers, premium seats and sunroof are the best. It looks good on the road. The features are an upgrade from the Elantra but I would recommend.

After test driving a Nissan Altima, Toyota Camry, and Honda Accord, I kept going back to the Sonata. The car drives really smooth and has many features I was looking forward. I was not really impressed with the other vehicles I drove, especially since they were priced higher than the Sonata. Hyundai had definitely made an improvement in the last couple of years!!

Is the 2021 Hyundai Sonata a good car?
Yes — the 2021 Hyundai Sonata earns a 4.75/5 user rating and an 8.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise its smooth driving experience, safety features, and strong fuel economy. The stylish design and excellent powertrain warranty also come up often, which fits the Sonata’s role as a practical sedan with a more distinctive personality. For you, that means it works well if you want everyday usefulness without giving up a bit of driving enjoyment. With 34.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, there’s also decent market support for value-focused shoppers.
Is the 2021 Hyundai Sonata reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with drivers repeatedly highlighting the strong powertrain warranty and the car’s overall smoothness. The expert review also describes the Sonata N Line as a family sedan that drives and feels like it should cost thousands more, while the five-year or 100,000-kilometre warranty adds peace of mind for long-term ownership. For used buyers, the main risk is less about core durability and more about whether the specific car’s features and condition match the premium feel owners expect.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Hyundai Sonata?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The N Line adds a more aggressive look with gloss black exterior details, 19-inch alloy wheels, sport front seats with Nappa leather bolsters and Dinamica suede inserts, red stitching, aluminium pedal covers, and a panoramic sunroof. It is the clear choice if you want the sportiest presentation and the most performance-focused cabin.
- Powertrain: The N Line uses a turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder with 290 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed wet dual-clutch automatic transmission with paddle shifters, rev-matching, and launch control. It also includes sport-tuned suspension, larger brakes, and faster steering response.
- Safety package: Hyundai’s ADAS suite includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, forward-collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, lane-centring assistance, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, driver-attention warning, automatic high-beam headlights, Rear Occupant Alert, Safe Exit Warning, and Highway Drive Assist. The N Line had not been tested independently as this review was written.
- Infotainment: You get a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel and a 10.25-inch touchscreen, plus onboard navigation, wireless smartphone charging, Bose audio, HD Radio, SiriusXM, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, and Blue Link connected services. It does not offer a WiFi hotspot.
- Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada says the Sonata N Line should use 8.8 L/100 km combined, with 10.1 L/100 km in the city and 7.2 L/100 km on the highway.
Which 2021 Hyundai Sonata trim should I buy?
The 2021 Hyundai Sonata is offered in 1 trim level: N Line.
Here's the short version:
The N Line: is the one to buy if you want the Sonata’s strongest performance, the most distinctive styling, and a well-equipped cabin. It adds the turbocharged 2.5-litre engine, dual-clutch transmission, sport suspension, upgraded brakes, and the full suite of premium interior and tech features. If you want the most complete and engaging version of this model year, this is the trim to target.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Hyundai Sonata?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 34.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 106 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 16.44% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $18,950 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Hyundai Sonata's resale value?
The current average of $18,987 CAD sits slightly below last year's $22,724 CAD.
That drop suggests the market has moved in buyers’ favour, which can make the car easier to purchase now but may also mean less upside for a future seller. If you buy at today’s average, your resale outcome will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the car has been maintained. The good news is that a model with strong equipment and broad appeal can still hold buyer interest better than a more ordinary sedan.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Hyundai Sonata safe?
The 2021 Hyundai Sonata earns a Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS on Limited trims with the upgraded LED projector headlights.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Hyundai’s standard ADAS package is extensive, and it includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, forward-collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, lane-centring assistance, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, driver-attention warning, automatic high-beam headlights, Rear Occupant Alert, Safe Exit Warning, and Highway Drive Assist. The caveat is that the N Line had not been tested independently as this review was written, so the strongest crash-test reference applies to the standard Sonata rather than this specific version.
Should I buy a 2021 Hyundai Sonata or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 34.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 16.44% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2021 N Line combines strong performance with a full-featured cabin and standout value.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $21,967 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $18,987 CAD average.
- It broadens appeal with a sporty N Line variant and a stronger sense of quality.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2021 is the smarter buy because prices are softer and owner satisfaction is strong. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer model-year alternative, the 2022 is the better secondary path.
