Is the 2021 Hyundai Kona a good car?

Yes — the 2021 Hyundai Kona earns a 4.8/5 user rating and a 7.17/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Cost effectiveness and Safety.

Owners consistently praise the Kona for its great value, smooth driving, and nice features like blind spot detection. That lines up with its use case as a small crossover that feels distinctive rather than generic, with a style-forward design and useful storage for everyday driving.

Its smooth driving character and solid feature set support confidence for long-term ownership, though the smaller cabin means you should make sure the space works for your needs before buying.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Hyundai Kona?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Kona’s trim walk matters because the base setup is more basic, while higher trims add features such as leather on the steering wheel and seats, plus a more upscale interior presentation. The model’s playful exterior styling and simple, intuitive cabin layout are part of the appeal, but you should check whether the trim you’re considering has the equipment you want.
• Powertrain: You get two engine choices: a 2.0-litre four-cylinder with 147 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque, or a turbocharged 1.6-litre engine with 195 hp and 195 lb-ft. The base engine is paired with a six-speed automatic, while the turbo uses a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. Both are described as adequate for city and highway use, with the turbo setup feeling more energetic but less smooth at low speeds.
• Safety package: Every Kona comes with forward-collision avoidance assist, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, and cruise control. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on AWD grades, while lane-keeping assist, lane-following assist, adaptive cruise control, a head-up display, and parking sensors are available upgrades.
• Infotainment: Standard equipment includes an eight-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, six speakers, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and USB inputs. Available upgrades include SiriusXM radio, navigation, a Harman Kardon audio system, and a 10.25-inch touchscreen, though that larger screen is not compatible with wireless smartphone connectivity.
• Fuel efficiency: With FWD and the base engine, fuel consumption is 8.6/7.0/7.9 L/100 km city/highway/combined. With AWD and the base engine, it is 9.2/7.8/8.6 L/100 km. The turbo engine with AWD returns 9.0/8.0/8.6 L/100 km.

Which 2021 Hyundai Kona trim should I buy?

The 2021 Hyundai Kona is offered in 6 trim levels: Essential, Preferred, Trend, Luxury, Urban Edition, and Ultimate.

Here's the short version:

• Essential: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the Kona’s styling, standard safety tech, and wireless smartphone connectivity at the lowest cost.
• Preferred: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds more everyday comfort and convenience while staying close to the lower end of the range.
• Trend: This is the sweet spot if you want a stronger mix of features and value, and the cost jump is still described as modest.
• Luxury: Choose this if you want a more upscale feel, since the Kona’s higher trims can add leather touches and a richer cabin presentation.
• Urban Edition: This suits you if you want a more distinctive version of the Kona without moving all the way to the top trim.
• Ultimate: Pick this if you want the most equipment and are comfortable paying for the top of the range, since the model’s pricing structure leaves room to move up.

The safety package is strong across the lineup, but AWD grades get extra standard blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Hyundai Kona?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it makes sense to compare listings carefully and move quickly on strong examples.

• Deal availability: 31.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 372 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.69% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $19,063 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Hyundai Kona's resale value?

The current average of $19,306 CAD sits slightly below last year's $21,615 CAD.

That softer pricing can help you buy in at a more attractive point, but it also means future resale gains may be more limited if the market stays under pressure. For a seller, the current trend suggests you should expect a more competitive used market rather than a rising one.

Even so, the Kona’s value-forward reputation and broad buyer appeal should help it remain easy to shop and resell relative to less distinctive rivals. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Hyundai Kona safe?

The 2021 Hyundai Kona earned a Top Safety Pick from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) scored it five stars overall.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Every Kona comes standard with forward-collision avoidance assist, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, and cruise control. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on AWD grades, while lane-keeping assist, lane-following assist, adaptive cruise control, a head-up display, and parking sensors are available upgrades.

Should I buy a 2021 Hyundai Kona or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 31.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.69% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It keeps the Kona’s value-forward styling, useful storage, and broad trim spread.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $17,515 CAD, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $19,306 CAD average.
• It is smaller, more engaging to drive, and still offers a generous feature set.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $21,192 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $19,306 CAD average.
• It brings a refreshed look, improved powertrains, and more sporty variants.

The bottom line: The 2021 is the balanced choice if you want the Kona’s style, features, and value without paying more for the refresh. If price matters most, the 2020 is the cheaper route; if you want newer styling and added performance, the 2022 is the better step up.
