Is the 2021 Hyundai Kona a good car?

Yes — the 2021 Hyundai Kona earns a 4.8/5 from owners and a 7.17/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Cost effectiveness and Safety.

Owners consistently praise its great value, smooth driving, and useful features like blind spot detection. That lines up well with the Kona’s role as a small crossover that feels distinctive rather than generic, especially if you want a subcompact SUV with style and an approachable footprint. Is the 2021 Hyundai Kona reliable?

The expert evaluation also describes it as a value-forward crossover with decent specs and enough comfort and composure to feel settled on the road. Hyundai’s first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house, which helps reduce early ownership costs.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is not mechanical drama but whether the smaller cabin and limited equipment on some trims will still suit your needs over time.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Hyundai Kona?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Kona’s styling is playful and distinctive, with a simple, intuitive cabin, but lower trims use standard cloth upholstery and fewer upscale touches. Higher trims add leather on the steering wheel and seats, so you should check whether the trim you’re considering has the comfort and finish you want.
• Powertrain: You get a 2.0-litre four-cylinder with 147 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque, or a turbocharged 1.6-litre engine with 195 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque. The base engine uses a six-speed automatic, while the turbo engine uses a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic; the latter can feel less graceful at low speeds.
• Safety package: Every Kona comes with forward-collision avoidance assist, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, and cruise control. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on AWD grades, while lane-keeping assist, lane-following assist, adaptive cruise control, a head-up display, and parking sensors are available.
• Infotainment: Every Kona gets an eight-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, six speakers, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and USB inputs. A 10.25-inch touchscreen is available, but it does not support wireless smartphone connectivity.
• Fuel efficiency: With FWD and the base engine, the Kona returns 8.6/7.0/7.9 L/100 km city/highway/combined. With AWD and the base engine, it uses 9.2/7.8/8.6 L/100 km, and the turbo engine with AWD is rated at 9.0/8.0/8.6 L/100 km.

Which 2021 Hyundai Kona trim should I buy?

The 2021 Hyundai Kona is offered in 6 trim levels: Essential, Preferred, Trend, Luxury, Urban Edition, and Ultimate.

Here's the short version:

• Essential: This is the entry point if you want the Kona’s styling, standard safety tech, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto without paying for extras. It makes sense if you care most about value and basic equipment.
• Preferred: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds more everyday comfort and convenience while staying close to the lower end of the range. If you want a balanced mix of features and price, start here.
• Trend: This is a smart step up if you want a richer feature set without jumping too far in price. The expert cost-effectiveness commentary suggests there is not much penalty for moving up.
• Luxury: Choose this if you want a more upscale feel, especially if leather touches matter to you. It suits buyers who want the Kona to feel less basic inside.
• Urban Edition: This trim is for shoppers who want a more distinctive take on the Kona’s style and equipment mix. It fits best if appearance and a more curated package matter to you.
• Ultimate: This is the most fully equipped choice, and the expert cost-effectiveness commentary suggests there is not much price penalty for going all out. It is the right pick if you want the most features and are comfortable paying for them.

Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on AWD grades, so check the drivetrain as well as the trim when comparing safety equipment.

• Deal availability: 30.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 397 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.46% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $19,060 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Hyundai Kona's resale value?

The current average of $19,196 CAD sits slightly below last year's $21,680 CAD.

That price decline suggests the Kona has become more accessible for used buyers, but it also means a future seller may face a softer market than last year. If you buy now, you’re entering at a lower average price than the prior year, which can help limit depreciation exposure from here. The Kona’s value-forward reputation and strong owner satisfaction should help support demand, especially for well-equipped examples.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Should I buy a 2021 Hyundai Kona or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 30.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.46% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It keeps the value-forward styling, strong features, and approachable crossover format that define this year.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $17,589 CAD, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $19,196 CAD average.
• It is smaller, more engaging to drive, and less focused on value.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $21,114 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $19,196 CAD average.
• It brings a refresh with updated styling, improved powertrains, and new sporty variants.

The bottom line: The 2021 is the best all-around pick if you want the Kona’s style, features, and value without paying more for the refresh. If your priority is lower purchase price, the 2020 is the cheaper route; if you want newer styling and more performance options, the 2022 is the better step up.
