CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Ford F-150
overall

Summary
With 224 currently listed for sale and an average price of $41,408 CAD, 22.3% of 2021 Ford F-150 listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Ford F-150 4.84 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.83 / 10.
Why it stands out
The 2021 Ford F-150 stands out because Ford redesigned its bestseller with more technology and an optional hybrid powertrain. It keeps the truck’s bold styling but adds a revamped interior with more convenience features and the new Sync 4 infotainment system. Ford also offers a wide range of configurations, with six trim levels, three cab configurations, three bed sizes, six powertrains, and a choice of rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, which makes the F-150 especially flexible for buyers with different needs.
The biggest mechanical headline is the available PowerBoost hybrid powertrain. Ford says this is the first time it has offered an F-150 hybrid, and it is currently the only full-hybrid powertrain available in a full-size pickup truck. That gives the 2021 F-150 a distinctive place in the segment, especially for shoppers who want a traditional full-size pickup with a more modern powertrain option.
At the same time, the redesign is described as smaller in scope than the truck’s previous update for the 2015 model year, so this is more an evolution than a radical reinvention. Owners also praise its powerful performance, modern technology, excellent ride comfort, and versatility, though some find the pricing a bit high and wish for improved features such as front parking sensors in certain trims.

The XLT 302A is the best bang for your buck. The powerboost motor has amazing fuel economy without sacrificing power, plus you get the benefit of a mobile generator. There is a lot of tech in this truck, so time will tell as far as quality, but so far, this truck is perfect.

Owners rate it 4.84/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a truck you can count on for powerful performance, modern technology, excellent ride comfort, and versatility. The same owner comments also highlight fuel efficiency from the smaller engines and a generally dependable, trouble-free feel for everyday use.
Ford’s test-drive notes also support that impression, with good road manners and impressive ride quality for a pickup. The warranty coverage is about average for the segment, so long-term ownership risk is more about choosing the right trim and powertrain than worrying about a broad reliability red flag.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Ford F-150?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base XL is spartan, while the XLT adds more everyday usability and the higher trims such as King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited bring a much more luxurious feel. If you want the best value, the XLT is the trim to compare carefully against the cheaper XL.
- Powertrain: You get a wide spread of engines, from the 3.3-litre V6 to the 5.0-litre V8, twin-turbo EcoBoost V6s, a 3.0-litre turbodiesel V6, and the PowerBoost hybrid. The hybrid is the most powerful option, but the non-hybrid 3.5-litre EcoBoost is the one to look at if towing is your priority.
- Safety package: Ford Co-Pilot360 includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and automatic high beams. Lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, hill-descent control, and intersection assist are available, though some require extra cost on certain trims.
- Infotainment: Sync 4 brings an 8-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, and over-the-air updates. Higher trims can get a 12-inch touchscreen and a 12-inch digital instrument cluster.
- Fuel efficiency: The PowerBoost hybrid is rated at 9.3 L/100 km combined with rear-wheel drive and 9.8 L/100 km combined with four-wheel drive. The hybrid is efficient for a full-size pickup, but the fuel savings are only modest versus other F-150 powertrains.
Which 2021 Ford F-150 trim should I buy?
The 2021 Ford F-150 is offered in 6 trim levels: XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- XL: This is the work-focused starting point, but it is the most stripped-back version of the truck. Choose it only if you want the lowest entry price and do not mind giving up the nicer cabin and convenience features found higher up the range.
- XLT: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds more everyday usability without pushing you into luxury-truck pricing. It is the trim to target if you want a balanced mix of equipment, comfort, and cost.
- Lariat: This is the step-up choice if you want a more premium feel and more available equipment without jumping all the way to the luxury end of the lineup.
- King Ranch: This trim leans into upscale materials and a more distinctive luxury-truck personality, with leather upholstery and wood trim in the test vehicle.
- Platinum: This is for you if you want a more premium, high-end F-150 experience with a stronger emphasis on comfort and refinement.
- Limited: This is the top-end choice if you want the most luxurious version of the truck and are willing to pay for it.
Ford’s safety and driver-assistance features are spread across the lineup, and some items require extra cost on certain trims.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Ford F-150?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you should shop with a clear target trim and powertrain in mind.
- Deal availability: 29.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,561 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.77% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $36,766 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Ford F-150's resale value?
The current average of $36,766 CAD sits slightly below last year's $41,204 CAD.
That price movement suggests the market has cooled enough to give you more negotiating room today, but it also means future sellers may face a softer resale environment than owners saw a year ago. If you buy well now, you may be able to limit depreciation by choosing a trim and powertrain that stay broadly desirable. Higher-demand configurations should hold up better than niche or heavily optioned versions.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.84/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Ford F-150 safe?
The 2021 Ford F-150 earns a good roof-strength rating from IIHS.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard Ford Co-Pilot360 equipment includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and automatic high beams. Lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, hill-descent control, and intersection assist are available, though some of those features require extra cost on certain trims.
One caveat is that full crash-test ratings were not yet available at launch, so the safety picture is not as complete as it is for some longer-running rivals.
Should I buy a 2021 Ford F-150 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 29.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.77% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.84/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It brings a redesigned cabin, Sync 4, and the available PowerBoost hybrid powertrain.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $31,588 CAD, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $36,766 CAD average.
- It is a capable, modern, and comfortable full-size pickup.
The bottom line: If you want the newer tech, broader powertrain choice, and the hybrid option, the 2021 is the better target. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2020 is the more budget-friendly path and still gives you the core F-150 strengths.
