CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Ford F-150
overall

Summary
With 306 currently listed for sale and an average price of $33,237 CAD, 30.4% of 2021 Ford F-150 listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Ford F-150 4.84 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.83 / 10.
Why it stands out
The 2021 Ford F-150 stands out because Ford redesigned its bestseller with more technology and an optional hybrid powertrain. It keeps the truck’s bold styling but adds a revamped interior with more convenience features and the new Sync 4 infotainment system. Ford also offers a wide range of configurations, with six trim levels, three cab configurations, three bed sizes, six powertrains, and a choice of rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, which makes the F-150 especially flexible for buyers with different needs.
The biggest mechanical headline is the available PowerBoost hybrid powertrain. Ford says this is the first time it has offered an F-150 hybrid, and it is currently the only full-hybrid powertrain available in a full-size pickup truck. That gives the 2021 F-150 a distinctive place in the segment, especially for shoppers who want a traditional full-size pickup with a more modern powertrain option.
At the same time, the redesign is described as smaller in scope than the truck’s previous update for the 2015 model year, so this is more an evolution than a radical reinvention. Owners also praise its powerful performance, modern technology, excellent ride comfort, and versatility, though some find the pricing a bit high and wish for improved features such as front parking sensors in certain trims.

The XLT 302A is the best bang for your buck. The powerboost motor has amazing fuel economy without sacrificing power, plus you get the benefit of a mobile generator. There is a lot of tech in this truck, so time will tell as far as quality, but so far, this truck is perfect.

The expert evaluation reinforces that impression by noting good road manners, impressive ride quality, and cabin noise levels that are better than you might expect in a pickup.
Ford’s warranty coverage includes a three-year, 60,000 km bumper-to-bumper warranty and a five-year, 100,000 km powertrain warranty, which helps support early ownership confidence. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that higher-trim trucks can be expensive to keep up, especially if you want more advanced equipment.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Ford F-150?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base XL and next-step XLT are described as more spartan inside, while higher trims such as King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited bring a much more luxurious feel. If you want a more upscale cabin, the higher trims are the ones to target.
- Powertrain: You get a wide spread of engines, from the 3.3-litre V6 to the 5.0-litre V8, twin-turbo EcoBoost V6s, a 3.0-litre turbodiesel V6, and the PowerBoost hybrid. The hybrid is the most powerful option, but the non-hybrid 3.5-litre EcoBoost is the one to choose if maximum towing matters most.
- Safety package: Ford Co-Pilot360 includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and automatic high beams. Lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, hill-descent control, and intersection assist are available, though some require extra cost on certain trims.
- Infotainment: Sync 4 brings Bluetooth, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and over-the-air updates. An 8-inch touchscreen is standard, while a 12-inch screen is available on higher trims.
- Fuel efficiency: The PowerBoost hybrid is rated at 9.3 L/100 km combined with rear-wheel drive and 9.8 L/100 km combined with four-wheel drive. The hybrid’s real-world efficiency advantage is modest, so it makes the most sense if you value the powertrain’s character as much as its fuel use.
Which 2021 Ford F-150 trim should I buy?
The 2021 Ford F-150 is offered in 6 trim levels: XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- XL: This is the work-focused starting point, and it makes the most sense if you want the lowest entry price and can live with the more basic interior.
- XLT: This is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it adds more everyday usability without jumping too far up the price ladder.
- Lariat: Choose this if you want a more polished mix of comfort and equipment without going all the way to the luxury trims.
- King Ranch: This trim leans into upscale materials and a more premium feel, making it a strong pick if you want a nicer cabin and don’t mind paying more.
- Platinum: This is for buyers who want a more luxurious F-150 with a high-end presentation.
- Limited: This is the top-end choice for shoppers who want the most premium version of the truck.
The safety package is built around Ford Co-Pilot360, with several driver-assistance features standard and others available depending on trim.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Ford F-150?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 29.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,585 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.65% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $37,020 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Ford F-150's resale value?
The current average of $37,105 CAD sits slightly below last year's $41,526 CAD.
That price movement suggests the market has cooled enough to give buyers more leverage today, but it also means future sellers may need to be realistic about expectations. If you buy well now, you may have less downside risk than someone who paid closer to the higher average from a year ago.
The truck’s broad appeal should help support demand over time, especially because it combines strong capability with modern tech and a wide range of configurations. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.84/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Ford F-150 safe?
The 2021 Ford F-150 earns a good rating from IIHS for roof strength.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard Ford Co-Pilot360 equipment includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and automatic high beams. Lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, hill-descent control, and intersection assist are available, though some features require extra cost on certain trims.
A key caveat is that full crash-test ratings from NHTSA and IIHS were not yet available at launch, so the safety picture is not as complete as it is for some rivals.
Should I buy a 2021 Ford F-150 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 29.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.65% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.84/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It brings the redesigned cabin, Sync 4 infotainment, and the available PowerBoost hybrid powertrain.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $31,783 CAD, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $37,105 CAD average.
- It offers an accommodating, modern interior with comfortable road manners.
The bottom line: If you want the newer tech, broader powertrain story, and stronger market momentum, the 2021 is the better target. If your priority is spending less up front and you still want a capable, comfortable full-size pickup, the 2020 is the value play.
