Is the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 a good car?

Yes — the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 earns a 4.6/5 user rating and a 5.5/10 expert rating. The model scores 7/10 across Performance and Form and function.

Owners consistently praise the comfortable ride, spacious interior, and strong performance, especially with the diesel engine options. You also get broad appeal as a proven full-size truck, which matters if you want a familiar, work-ready pickup with plenty of configuration choices. At the same time, the Silverado’s appeal is tempered by some criticism of the interior quality and sound system.

With 30.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, there’s still meaningful market opportunity if you shop carefully.

Is the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 reliable?

Owners rate it 4.6/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The expert assessment also describes it as a fundamentally sound truck, which supports the idea that the Silverado has the basics to serve you well over time. Its long-term ownership risk is more about uneven refinement and feature execution than about the core truck being hard to live with.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Silverado comes in eight different trim levels, and the cabin quality can feel dated in lower-spec versions. You should pay close attention to how much equipment is included, because the base truck can feel sparse compared with better-equipped trims.
• Powertrain: You can find six different engines paired with 6-speed, 8-speed, and 10-speed automatic transmissions. The available Duramax turbodiesel stands out for its smooth acceleration and strong efficiency, while the 6.2-litre V8 is the choice if maximum towing capability matters most.
• Safety package: Chevrolet offers forward collision alert, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, and a Safety Alert Seat are available, but stop-and-go capability and lane-centering assistance are not.
• Infotainment: The Silverado uses Chevrolet Infotainment System 3 with 7-inch and 8-inch screens. Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto are standard, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are available on higher trims.
• Fuel efficiency: The Duramax turbodiesel returned 9.6 L/100 km in combined driving during testing, and Natural Resources Canada lists it at 10.0 L/100 km combined.

Which 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 trim should I buy?

The 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is offered in 8 trim levels: WT, Custom, Custom Trail Boss, LT, RST, LT Trail Boss, LTZ, High Country.

Here's the short version:

• WT: This is the work-focused starting point, and it makes sense if you want the Silverado’s core capability without paying for extra comfort or tech. It is the trim to consider if you care most about keeping costs down.
• Custom: This trim adds a bit more everyday usability and style while staying relatively accessible. It is a sensible step up if you want a better balance of price and equipment.
• Custom Trail Boss: Choose this if you want the off-road-oriented look and hardware without moving all the way up the range. It suits buyers who want a more rugged personality.
• LT: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it gives you a more complete feature set without jumping into luxury pricing. If you want the sweet spot, this is the one to focus on.
• RST: Pick this if you want a more appearance-driven truck with a sportier feel. It is a good fit if style matters as much as utility.
• LT Trail Boss: This is the better choice if you want more capability and a tougher setup than the standard LT. It suits buyers who want a more serious truck stance.
• LTZ: This trim brings a more upscale feel and was the test truck’s trim level, but the cabin still shows the Silverado’s age in places. It is best if you want more comfort and equipment and are willing to pay for it.
• High Country: This is the top trim and the right pick if you want the most premium Silverado experience available in this model year. It is the one to choose if you want maximum content and are shopping near the top of the range.

The safety content also notes that Chevrolet offers a Safety Package with a Safety Alert Seat, while adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, and lane-keep assist are available upgrades.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it rewards comparison shopping more than impulse buying.

• Deal availability: 30.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 747 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 14.30% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $35,463 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500's resale value?

The current average of $35,463 CAD sits slightly below last year's $41,380 CAD.

That price movement suggests the Silverado has become more approachable for used buyers, which can make it easier for a future seller to attract interest if the truck is well kept. The softer market also means you may not recover as much as a seller as you might have when prices were higher. Even so, a truck with broad appeal and strong owner satisfaction can still hold buyer attention better than a less popular alternative.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 safe?

The 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 earns a Marginal IIHS rating for front passenger protection in a small-overlap frontal crash, and it earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA with four-star frontal-impact results for the driver and front passenger.

It earns a 3/10 safety score from our experts.

Chevrolet includes forward collision alert, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, a rearview camera, front and rear parking sensors, automatic collision notification through connected services, and a rear-seat reminder system with crew cabs. Teen Driver safety technology is standard and free. Available upgrades include adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, and a Safety Alert Seat.

The main concern is that the Silverado’s crash-test results lag behind expectations, especially for front passenger protection and headlight performance.

Should I buy a 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 30.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 14.30% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2021 stands out for its proven full-size-truck formula, strong sales, and broad appeal, even if it still needs more attention to detail.

The bottom line: If you want a used Silverado with strong owner satisfaction and a softer price environment, the 2021 is a reasonable buy. If you are especially price-sensitive, you may want to keep shopping and compare nearby model years for the best combination of equipment and value.
