What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Toyota Corolla?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The L trim is the base version, while SE and XSE bring the more attractive styling and a more premium-feeling cabin. The lower trims are more basic, and the base setup is where you are most likely to notice feature gaps.
• Powertrain: L, LE, and XLE use a 1.8-litre 4-cylinder engine with 139 horsepower and a CVT, while SE and XSE upgrade to a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder with 169 horsepower. The SE can also be had with a six-speed manual, and the XSE adds paddle shifters and a physical launch gear.
• Safety package: Every Corolla gets Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, which includes lane departure alert, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, low-light pedestrian detection, daytime cyclist detection, road-sign recognition, and Lane Tracing Assist. Blind-spot monitoring is standard on all but the base trims, and it does not include rear cross-traffic alert.
• Infotainment: All versions get Bluetooth, Siri Eyes Free, Apple CarPlay, and a 3-year free trial of Safety Connect services. Higher trims get an 8-inch display instead of a 7-inch screen, plus a USB charging port.
• Fuel efficiency: The Corolla is described as thrifty with fuel, and the hybrid is rated at 4.5 litres per 100 kilometres combined. The XSE test car was rated at 7.7 L/100 km city, 6.1 L/100 km highway, and 7.0 L/100 km combined.

Which 2020 Toyota Corolla trim should I buy?

The 2020 Toyota Corolla is offered in 4 trim levels: L, LE, XLE, SE, and XSE.

Here's the short version:

• L: This is the entry point if you want the lowest-cost way into the Corolla, but it is the most basic choice and best suited to shoppers focused mainly on value.
• LE: This is the sensible middle-ground pick if you want a little more equipment without moving too far up the price ladder.
• XLE: Choose this if you want a more upscale-feeling Corolla and are willing to pay for it.
• SE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the more powerful 2.0-litre engine and a sportier character.
• XSE: Pick this if you want the most polished and best-equipped version, with the strongest style and the most premium-feeling cabin.

Blind-spot monitoring is standard on all but the base trims, so that is worth factoring into your trim choice.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Toyota Corolla?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find decent options.

• Deal availability: 29.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 415 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.79% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $19,684 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Toyota Corolla's resale value?

The current average of $19,791 CAD sits slightly below last year's $21,698 CAD.

That price movement suggests the market has cooled a bit, which can make the Corolla easier to buy now than it was a year ago. For a future seller, that also means resale value may be more sensitive to condition, mileage, and trim choice than it would be in a hotter market.

Even so, the Corolla’s reputation for reliability and efficiency should help it remain appealing to used-car shoppers. Well-kept examples should continue to draw steady interest, especially if they have the features buyers want most.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.69/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 Toyota Corolla safe?

The 2020 Corolla earns a five-star rating for frontal-impact protection and side-impact testing from NHTSA, and the redesigned Corolla sedan was named a Top Safety Pick by IIHS.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 comes standard on every 2020 Corolla and includes lane departure alert, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, low-light pedestrian detection, daytime cyclist detection, road-sign recognition, and Lane Tracing Assist. Lane Tracing Assist works with adaptive cruise control to help keep the car centred in its lane.

Blind-spot monitoring is standard on all but the base trims, which is an important detail if you want the extra confidence of that feature. One caveat is that the lane-departure warning uses a sharp audible alert that may be irritating for some drivers.

Should I buy a 2020 Toyota Corolla or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 29.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.79% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.69/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The redesigned 2020 model adds more style and a bit of thrill to the Corolla formula.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $21,103 CAD, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $19,791 CAD average.
• It adds a more expressive personality, especially in SE and XSE trims.

The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2020 is the smarter buy because it combines a lower average price with strong owner satisfaction and broad appeal. If you are willing to spend more for a slightly newer model with a more expressive character, the 2021 is the better alternative.
