Is the 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class a good car?

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class earns a 7.2/10 expert rating, and its appeal comes from blending ruggedness and luxury in a way few SUVs can match. The standout strength is Look and feel at 9/10.

It pairs the luxury and technology you expect from Mercedes with an anachronistic look and feel that recalls the original G-Wagen, so it suits you best if you want a vehicle with strong character and presence rather than pure practicality. It is also one of the last SUVs with true off-road capability, which broadens its appeal beyond image alone.

25.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so you do have some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class reliable?

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class is presented as a rugged, modernised SUV with serious off-road hardware and a long list of standard safety features, which supports confidence in day-to-day use. Its performance hardware is substantial, with standard four-wheel drive, a nine-speed automatic transmission, and locking differentials, and the expert assessment notes that the driver-assistance features generally performed well.

The cost-effectiveness commentary also points to the first scheduled maintenance visit being on the house, which is a small ownership perk. Even so, this is a six-figure SUV with complex luxury equipment, so long-term ownership risk for used buyers is higher than it would be for a simpler mainstream SUV.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The cabin is loaded with standard luxury touches such as leather upholstery, heated front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel, three-zone automatic climate control, and 64-colour ambient lighting, while the exterior keeps the classic boxy G-Class shape and can be had with an AMG front push bar on the performance model.
• Powertrain: The G-Class uses a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 with 416 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque, paired with four-wheel drive and a nine-speed automatic transmission; the AMG version adds much more power, but the standard model already delivers strong on-road pace and serious off-road hardware.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, automatic emergency brake assist, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, parking assist, and a driver-attention monitor, plus Pre Safe functions that tighten the seatbelts, close the windows, and adjust the front-passenger seat.
• Infotainment: You get a 12.3-inch infotainment display, a second 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, Bluetooth, SiriusXM satellite radio, and a 15-speaker Burmester audio system; the system does not use a touchscreen.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada rates the G-Class at 13.6 L/100 km in the city, 12.4 L/100 km on the highway, and 13.1 L/100 km combined.

Which 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class trim should I buy?

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class is offered in 2 trim levels: G550, AMG G63.

Here's the short version:

• G550: This is the better-value choice because it gives you the full G-Class experience, including the twin-turbo V8, standard four-wheel drive, locking differentials, the dual 12.3-inch display setup, and the full suite of driver-assistance features without jumping to the much pricier performance model.
• AMG G63: Choose this if you want the most powerful and most expensive version, with a souped-up twin-turbo V8, much quicker acceleration, and the added presence that comes with the AMG treatment.

The safety package is strong across the range, but lane-keep assist had a few false alarms, so that is worth checking during a test drive.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 25.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 55 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.01% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $156,232 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class's resale value?

The current average of $170,366 CAD sits slightly below last year's $177,482 CAD.

That softer pricing suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you as a buyer today. For a future seller, it means the G-Class is still holding a strong six-figure position, but recent depreciation shows that pricing can move down when supply or demand shifts. If you buy carefully now, you may reduce the risk of overpaying relative to the current market.

Is the 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class safe?

The 2020 G-Class hasn’t received crash-test ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) or National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

The G-Class gets a long list of safety features, including adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, automatic emergency brake assist, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, parking assist, and a driver-attention monitor. Mercedes’ Pre Safe system also tightens the seatbelts, closes the windows, and adjusts the front-passenger seat to help protect occupants if a collision is unavoidable.

One caveat is that lane-keep assist had a few false alarms and could intervene aggressively, so that is worth paying attention to on a test drive.

Should I buy a 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 25.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.01% compared with last year.
• The 2020 model year gives you the redesigned G-Class with its modern luxury features while preserving the old-school character that defines the nameplate.

The bottom line: If you want the classic G-Class personality with modern Mercedes luxury, the 2020 is a strong choice. If you are more price-sensitive, you can use the softer market and deal share to shop carefully for a well-priced example rather than rushing into the first one you see.
