CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Mazda MAZDA3
Summary
With 45 currently listed for sale and an average price of $16,247 CAD, 31.1% of 2020 Mazda MAZDA3 listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Mazda MAZDA3 5 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Mazda MAZDA3 stands out because it brings a genuine premium feel to the compact-car class without losing the brand’s focus on style and driver appeal. Mazda’s fourth-generation car is described as a striking alternative to premium-brand rivals, and the hatchback’s sleeker, coupe-like rear styling gives it a more distinctive look than many mainstream competitors. Inside, it pairs a simple, sporty layout with supportive front seats and high-quality materials, which helps explain why it feels more upscale than its price might suggest.
It is also notable for the breadth of equipment it offers. All models are said to include alloy wheels, cruise control, LED headlights, and advanced safety features, while all but the early entry-level sedan versions add blind-spot monitoring, dual-zone climate control, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Higher-spec versions go further with a Bose premium audio system and electric driver’s seat adjustment. For buyers who want more performance, the Mazda3 2.5 Turbo arrived for the 2021 model year, so it does not apply to the 2020 car.
There are a few trade-offs, though. The hatchback’s tapered roof and window line reduce practicality and rear visibility a little, and owners have reported some air-conditioning issues in the post-2019 car. Even so, the 2020 Mazda MAZDA3 remains appealing because it combines style, strong equipment, and a refined driving experience in a package that feels more premium than most compact cars.

The Mazda 3 really shines compared to other compact cars because it feels so much more fun and engaging to drive, with sharp handling, responsive steering, and even the option for all-wheel drive or a turbo engine if you want more power. Inside, it feels more like a luxury car than an economy sedan, thanks to its quiet cabin, high-quality materials, and sleek design. On top of that, it’s packed with modern safety features and earns strong crash-test ratings, which adds a lot of peace of mind. The trade-offs are that the back seat and trunk aren’t the most spacious, the ride can feel a little firm on rough roads, and the higher trims can get pricey. When you compare it to other cars, the Mazda 3 is definitely more stylish and fun than the Toyota Corolla, though the Corolla has hybrids and a long reputation for reliability; it feels more upscale than the Honda Civic, though the Civic offers more space and resale value; and it’s nicer to drive than the Hyundai Elantra, even if the Elantra is usually cheaper at the entry level. Overall, the Mazda 3 is a great choice if you care about style, quality, and the joy of driving, rather than just getting the most space or the lowest price.

It’s got great power, rides beautifully and is a joy to drive with a 6 speed manual. Red leather interior. Nothing better!

With the exception of the VW Golf/GTI, no other non-luxury brand offers this level of refinement, features and driving enjoyment in a compact. The interior is on par with the luxury brands, its impeccably handsome both inside and out, and it leaves wanting nothing more for the driver, besides maybe a little more power (which you can now get with the recently added turbo). Backseat passengers could use a little more room and trunk is smallish, even for the class, but both are adequate for most families and it excels everywhere else.

Is the 2020 Mazda MAZDA3 a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Mazda MAZDA3 earns a 5/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Drivers consistently praise its stunning design, amazing interior, and enjoyable driving experience, and many also appreciate the luxurious feel and advanced safety features. It fits especially well if you want a compact car that feels more premium than its segment suggests, while still delivering style and driver appeal. With 30.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, you also have a decent chance of finding a well-priced example.
Is the 2020 Mazda MAZDA3 reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Mazda MAZDA3?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 30.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 193 listings available.

What is the 2020 Mazda MAZDA3's resale value?
The current average of $19,869 CAD sits slightly below last year's $20,126 CAD.
That softer pricing suggests the model has become a bit more accessible for buyers, which can also mean future sellers may need to price competitively to stand out. If you buy well now, you may have a better chance of limiting depreciation pressure later. Strong demand for a stylish, well-equipped compact car can help support values, especially when the market continues to reward premium-feeling interiors and good owner satisfaction.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2020 Mazda MAZDA3 or consider a different year?

Choose the 2020 if:
- 30.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.28% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $21,419 CAD, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $19,869 CAD average.
- It adds a turbocharged engine for stronger performance.
The bottom line:
