Why it stands out
The 2020 Hyundai Sonata stands out because it marked the start of the model’s eighth generation, bringing a dramatic new look and a much more modern feel. Its curvaceous, muscular styling, low-slung fastback shape, and distinctive lighting signatures made it a clear break from the Sonata’s earlier design language. It also offered a broad mix of gas and hybrid powertrains in Canada at launch, along with front-wheel drive, giving buyers a choice between efficiency and stronger performance.
Inside, the 2020 Sonata was well equipped and thoughtfully packaged. Standard equipment included an 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, USB ports, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, rear seat reminders, driver-attention warnings, and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection. Heated front seats and a heated, leather-wrapped steering wheel were standard, while available upgrades included a Bose audio system, a panoramic sunroof, parking assist, a head-up display, parking sensors, and 18-inch alloy wheels. The car also offered ample room in the back and trunk, which helped make it a practical family sedan.
Its appeal was not just about features. The 2020 Sonata was described as one of the best midsize sedans on the market, with good driving dynamics, strong safety credentials, and a relaxing, well-equipped character. It was also noted for above-average interior and trunk space, and for being a good value relative to its equipment level. The main limitation is that it is not as sporty to drive as it looks, and it does not offer all-wheel drive.

This is my second Sonata. The first one was a 2008 at about the same trim level. I had upgraded the radio to an android tablet-based version with many of the features found in the newer model cars. The newer Sonata is great, and any comments are very minor. 1. I am still getting used to the push-button transmission and performance selection between the seats. I just leave it in normal. 2. Having the brake set with the park button is nice. I still look to see if I have to release it. 3. The larger wheels with thinner tires look good but may give a slightly rougher ride. 4. I have the base radio. It sounds great, but you need to couple it with a phone to get GPS and there is no built-in CD player. Yeah, I am an old guy. 5. I have read that the acceleration is not as good as some competitors. It is great for me and feels quicker than my much-loved 2008. 6. You might want to upgrade the Factory alarm. All in all, no buyers remorse here.

For a 1.6L it has a lot of pick up. You can really feel that turbo kick in! Inside, this thing is like a luxury car... its beautiful. Minimalism on the dash is nice and clean. It also explains all the tech on the screen which is very helpful. Overall probably the best car you can get for the price if youre looking for a little luxury in your life.

our family is into Sonatas and for a good reason the ride is like a flying carpet because of the shocks plus all the safety features we would like to meet the design team in person. Sonata limited lacks nothing for the price .

How much does the 2020 Hyundai Sonata cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $18,816 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $18,688 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $21,862 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $21,808 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −13.72% |
Prices have softened 13.72% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 102 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2020 Hyundai Sonata a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Hyundai Sonata earns a 5/5 user rating, and that lines up with the themes owners repeat most often: strong value, a smooth ride, and a generous feature set. The overview also points to a comfortable cabin, ample rear-seat and trunk space, and a long list of standard tech and safety equipment, which makes it a practical fit if you want a well-equipped midsize sedan for daily commuting or family use. With 29.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, you also have a decent chance of finding one that feels fairly priced.
Is the 2020 Hyundai Sonata reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a car that feels dependable and trouble-free in everyday use, with buyers praising its smooth driving experience and strong overall value. For used-car shoppers, that kind of long-term confidence lowers the risk of unpleasant surprises if the vehicle has been maintained properly.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Hyundai Sonata?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 29.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 102 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 13.72% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $18,688 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Hyundai Sonata's resale value?
The current average of $18,816 CAD sits slightly below last year's $21,808 CAD.
That softer pricing can be good news if you're buying now, but it also means a future seller may need to be realistic about expectations. If the market stays competitive, your resale outcome will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the car has been maintained. The Sonata's broad appeal should help keep interest steady, especially among shoppers looking for value and features in a midsize sedan.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2020 Hyundai Sonata or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 29.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 13.72% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $18,807 CAD, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $18,816 CAD average.
- It adds a performance-focused N Line option for more driving excitement.
The bottom line: If you want the best mix of value, comfort, and features, the 2020 is the safer default choice. If you are especially price-sensitive, the 2021 is worth a look because it lands at a very similar average price while adding a more performance-oriented angle.
