Is the 2020 Hyundai Elantra a good car?

Yes — the 2020 Hyundai Elantra earns a 4.53/5 user rating and an 8.33/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.

Drivers consistently praise its great value, gas mileage, and smooth ride, and many also like the safety features and updated technology. It suits you best if you want a practical compact sedan with a roomy cabin and strong everyday usefulness rather than excitement. The trade-offs are fairly pedestrian performance and some missing advanced features, including keyless entry on some versions. With 31.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still offers some attractive opportunities.

Is the 2020 Hyundai Elantra reliable?

Owners rate it 4.53/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback points to a car that feels dependable, with praise for its smooth ride, gas mileage, and overall value. The expert assessment also supports that impression by describing it as a cost-effective, practical compact sedan with low ownership costs and a five-year/100,000-kilometre warranty. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that a car this value-focused may not feel as refined or feature-rich as newer rivals.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Hyundai Elantra?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Essential trim is the most basic version, with a 5-inch screen and fewer convenience features than higher trims. Preferred adds a larger 7-inch display and more equipment, while Ultimate brings the most upscale cabin and tech. The safety package is available on Preferred, and Ultimate adds more advanced driver assistance features.
• Powertrain: The base setup is a 147-horsepower, 2.0-litre four-cylinder with a CVT, while the Sport trim uses a 1.6-litre turbo four-cylinder with 201 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque. All models are front-wheel drive, and the Sport also gets an independent rear suspension.
• Safety package: A collection of advanced driver assistance systems is available on Preferred as a package, including forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and a driver attention monitor. Preferred already includes blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, while Ultimate adds full LED headlights with automatic high-beam operation, adaptive cruise control, pedestrian detection, and Safe Exit Assist.
• Infotainment: Essential gets a 5-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth and a USB port. Preferred upgrades to a 7-inch display with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and SiriusXM satellite radio, while Ultimate increases the screen to 8 inches and adds navigation, a wireless charging pad, and a premium Infinity sound system.
• Fuel efficiency: The new CVT improves fuel efficiency by 0.6 litres per 100 kilometres in combined driving, but the test vehicle still averaged 8.0 L/100 km in real-world testing.

Which 2020 Hyundai Elantra trim should I buy?

The 2020 Hyundai Elantra is offered in 5 trim levels: Essential, Preferred, Luxury, Ultimate, and Sport.

Here's the short version:

• Essential: This is the entry point if you want the lowest-cost way into the Elantra, but it is the most stripped-back version. You get the basic infotainment setup and the standard 2.0-litre engine, so it makes sense if price matters most and you can live without the extra convenience and safety features found higher up.
• Preferred: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the 7-inch screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM, and the available advanced safety package. It also already includes blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, making it the sweet spot for everyday use.
• Luxury: This trim sits above Preferred and is aimed at you if you want a more upscale feel without jumping all the way to Ultimate. It builds on the Elantra’s comfort and convenience strengths, though the available information does not spell out every added feature here.
• Ultimate: This is the most fully equipped mainstream version, with an 8-inch screen, navigation, wireless charging, a premium Infinity audio system, and the most advanced safety equipment. Choose it if you want the most technology and convenience in the lineup.
• Sport: This is the one to choose if you care more about driving character than pure value. Its 1.6-litre turbo engine and independent rear suspension make it the most engaging version, though it is still very much a compact sedan first.

For safety, the Preferred trim is the key one to watch because the advanced driver-assistance package is available there, while Ultimate adds the most complete safety equipment.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Hyundai Elantra?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right car.

• Deal availability: 31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 514 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 13.74% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $14,666 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Hyundai Elantra's resale value?

The current average of $14,697 CAD sits slightly below last year's $17,038 CAD.

That softer pricing trend suggests the Elantra is currently more buyer-friendly than seller-friendly. If you plan to resell later, you should expect value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and trim. Well-equipped versions with the stronger feature set should be easier to market than bare-bones examples. The good news is that the model’s strong value reputation can help keep demand steady.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.53/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 Hyundai Elantra safe?

The 2020 Hyundai Elantra earns a Top Safety Pick from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) when equipped with full LED headlights, and it earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

A collection of advanced driving assistance systems is available on the Preferred trim as a package, including forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and a driver attention monitor. Preferred already includes blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, while Ultimate adds full LED headlights with automatic high-beam operation, adaptive cruise control, pedestrian detection, and Safe Exit Assist. NHTSA also notes a concern about rear-door intrusion on the rear-seat passenger during the side-impact test.

Should I buy a 2020 Hyundai Elantra or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 13.74% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.53/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds improved fuel efficiency ratings and newly packaged safety features.

Consider the 2019 if:

• At $12,347 CAD, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $14,697 CAD average.
• It remains a strong value pick with a more polished feel.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $17,549 CAD, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $14,697 CAD average.
• It brings a more polished, sophisticated, and sporty redesign.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of value, safety, and everyday practicality, the 2020 is the smart middle ground. If your budget is tighter, the 2019 is the cheaper route; if you want a more modern-feeling compact sedan, the 2021 is the upgrade path.
