Why it stands out
The 2020 Ford Mustang stands out as a classic pony car that still feels relevant in a market dominated by SUVs. It is described as a building block for Ford’s future, yet it remains rooted in the Mustang’s traditional appeal: gasoline power, rear-wheel-drive attitude, and a focus on performance. The available powertrain choices help give it broad appeal, and the car’s reputation for being fun to drive is a major part of its identity.
It also offers strong value for money, which makes it attractive to buyers who want performance without stepping into a more expensive sports car. At the same time, the Mustang’s compromises are clear: cargo space is limited, and advanced safety features are not standard. That balance of excitement and practicality is part of what makes the 2020 Ford Mustang distinctive, especially for shoppers who care more about driving enjoyment and style than everyday utility.

I put 16000 miles on a new 2020 Mustang. Absolutely no issues. It also got great gas mileage. I averaged 29.6 mpg for the whole time I owned the car. I had the manual which was a little stiff when I first got it but worked in great.

The 2020 Ford Mustang EcoBoost HPP: A Balanced Masterpiece The 2020 Ford Mustang EcoBoost High Performance Package (HPP) represents a unique blend of spirited performance, efficiency, and everyday practicality. While the Mustang name traditionally evokes the rumble of a V8, this EcoBoost variant proves that turbocharged four-cylinder power can deliver just as much excitement with a modern twist. Under the hood lies a 2.3L turbocharged engine generating an impressive 330 horsepower, enabling a 0-60 mph time of just 4.5 seconds. This level of performance, paired with MagneRide suspension and a Torsen limited-slip differential, gives the EcoBoost HPP dynamic handling characteristics that shine on both the open road and twisty mountain passes. What truly sets this Mustang apart is its balance of performance and fuel efficiency. Rated at 20-27 MPG, it offers a range of approximately 450 miles per tank, making it an excellent choice for road trips. This was evident during a recent drive from Oregon to Colorado, where the EcoBoost excelled at tackling diverse terrains while offering a smooth and comfortable ride. Beyond its performance, the EcoBoost HPP proves to be a stylish and versatile companion. Its sleek design, aggressive stance, and advanced technology make it a car that commands attention. Whether cruising through fall foliage or tearing up the quarter-mile track, this Mustang excels in every scenario. For enthusiasts seeking a thrilling, efficient, and modern take on the Mustang legacy, the EcoBoost HPP is a masterpiece.

Is the 2020 Ford Mustang a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Ford Mustang earns a 4.73/5 user rating and an 8.17/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Performance, Cost effectiveness, and Technology.
Owners consistently praise its power, fun driving experience, and stylish looks, and many also like the comfort of the seats and the range of engine choices. The main trade-offs are limited cargo space and the fact that advanced safety features are not standard.
That lines up with the car’s broader appeal: it is aimed at you if you want a performance-focused coupe or convertible that still delivers strong value for money and a distinctive personality. With 34.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still offers some attractive opportunities.
Is the 2020 Ford Mustang reliable?
Owners rate it 4.73/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a car that feels dependable in daily use, with praise for its power, comfort, and overall enjoyment over time. The expert review also frames it as a car that can deliver serious performance while still being usable enough for regular driving.
Ford’s maintenance and ownership experience is not highlighted with a special service perk here, so your best used-buying protection is a careful inspection and a complete service history. For a performance car like this, that matters because hard use can raise long-term ownership risk if maintenance has been skipped.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Ford Mustang?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Bullitt stands out with its clean, classic look, unique green stitching, cue-ball shifter, serialized plaque, and retro-inspired details, while the base GT Performance Package adds structural bracing, improved cooling, a Torsen limited-slip rear differential, modified steering and suspension tuning, Brembo brakes, and more stability-control leeway. The base setup is lighter on special equipment, so you should check whether the features you want are included.
- Powertrain: The lineup ranges from a 310-horsepower turbocharged 2.3-litre four-cylinder to a 460-horsepower 5.0-litre V8, with the Bullitt using a 480-horsepower version of the V8. Transmission choices include manual, automatic, and dual-clutch setups depending on the model, and the Bullitt is manual-only.
- Safety package: The car includes a reversing camera and MyKey as standard, while blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic warning is part of the optional Electronics Package. Advanced driver-assistance features are otherwise sparse, so trim and package content matter.
- Infotainment: The Mustang uses a Sync 3 system with an 8-inch touchscreen, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and available 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio. It also has a 12-inch digital instrumentation cluster, but the touchscreen response is not the quickest.
- Fuel efficiency: The four-cylinder EcoBoost Mustang uses 11.2 L/100 km in the city, 7.3 on the highway, and 9.4 combined. The Bullitt sits at 16.4/10.2/13.6 L/100 km, while the Shelby GT500 returns 19.9/12.7/16.7 L/100 km.
Which 2020 Ford Mustang trim should I buy?
The 2020 Ford Mustang is offered in 5 trim levels: EcoBoost Fastback, EcoBoost Convertible, Mustang GT, Shelby GT350, and Shelby GT500.
Here's the short version:
- EcoBoost Fastback: This is the entry point if you want the Mustang shape and the turbocharged 2.3-litre engine without stepping up to V8 pricing. It suits you if value matters most and you still want the core Mustang experience.
- EcoBoost Convertible: Choose this if you want the same turbocharged setup as the Fastback but prefer open-air driving. It is the better fit if style and top-down use matter more than outright performance.
- Mustang GT: This is the best-value choice for most shoppers because it brings the 460-horsepower 5.0-litre V8 and the strongest balance of performance and price. If you want the classic Mustang character, this is the trim to focus on.
- Shelby GT350: This is the track-focused step up, with 526 horsepower from a 5.2-litre V8 and a more serious performance mission. It suits you if you want a sharper, more specialised driving experience.
- Shelby GT500: This is the top performance model, with a supercharged 5.2-litre V8 making 760 horsepower. It is for buyers who want maximum straight-line and track capability above all else.
The safety content also notes that advanced safety features are not standard, so check package content carefully before you buy.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Ford Mustang?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 34.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 169 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 15.42% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $32,942 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Ford Mustang's resale value?
The current average of $34,947 CAD sits slightly below last year's $41,318 CAD.
That price drop suggests the market has become more favourable for buyers, but it also means future sellers may need to be realistic about pricing if they want to move the car quickly. A used Mustang with strong equipment and clean history should still attract attention, especially if it is well maintained and presented in a desirable trim.
The softer pricing trend can help keep demand active, but resale will still depend on condition, mileage, and how well the car has been cared for. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.73/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Ford Mustang safe?
The 2020 Ford Mustang gets Good ratings in most IIHS crashworthiness tests, with an Acceptable rating for driver protection in a small overlap frontal-impact collision, and it earns five-star ratings in every NHTSA test.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
The standard safety equipment includes a reversing camera, MyKey, and 911 Assist if your phone is paired and connected. Blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic warning is available through the optional Electronics Package, but advanced driver-assistance features are otherwise limited.
That means you should not expect a long list of standard active-safety tech, especially on lower-spec examples. The small-overlap IIHS result is the main caveat to keep in mind when you are comparing used examples.
Should I buy a 2020 Ford Mustang or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 34.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 15.42% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.73/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Ford’s Bullitt special edition gives this year a nostalgic, performance-focused send-off.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $31,424 CAD, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $34,947 CAD average.
- It adds Bullitt style, extra power, and strong enthusiast appeal.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of current pricing, broad inventory, and proven owner satisfaction, the 2020 is the better all-round pick. If your priority is spending less up front and you like the Bullitt’s special-edition character, the 2019 is the more price-sensitive alternative.
