Is the 2019 Toyota RAV4 a good car?

Yes — the 2019 Toyota RAV4 earns a 4.5/5 user rating and an 8.00/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Safety.

Drivers consistently praise its great value, smooth ride, spacious interior, and modern features. The RAV4 also gets credit for its safety features and adaptability for outdoor use, which fits its role as a compact SUV for daily driving, family duties, and road trips.

The trade-offs are clear: the engine can feel underwhelming, and the ride is let down by poor handling. That means you should expect a practical, style-forward SUV rather than a particularly engaging one to drive.

With 28.7% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still enough market activity to find a worthwhile example.

Is the 2019 Toyota RAV4 reliable?

Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The expert assessment also describes Toyota’s approach as one that prioritises reliability and practical ownership, which fits the RAV4’s reputation.

Toyota’s ownership experience is also helped by its strong efficiency and sensible packaging, which can make day-to-day use feel straightforward and predictable. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that a well-used example may show wear in the cabin or feel less refined than you expect.

What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Toyota RAV4?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The LE starts with steel 17-inch wheels with plastic covers, heated front seats, LED headlights, automatic high beams, and privacy-tinted windows, while the XLE adds alloy wheels, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift lever, fog lights, a power moonroof, push-button start, a power liftgate, and dual-zone climate control. The Trail adds a more rugged look and equipment, and the Limited brings the most upscale cabin and exterior touches.
• Powertrain: Every trim uses a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine with 203 horsepower and an eight-speed automatic. FWD is standard on the lower trims, AWD is available, and the Trail and Limited use torque-vectoring AWD for more capability.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes forward-collision warning and emergency braking, lane-departure warning, automatic high-beams, adaptive cruise control, and Lane-Tracing Assist. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are also standard.
• Infotainment: The LE has a 7-inch touchscreen with Entune 3.0, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, and a USB port. The XLE adds more USB ports, the Trail gets an 8-inch screen and upgraded instrument display, and Android Auto is not available.
• Fuel efficiency: The FWD model is rated at 8.8 L/100 km city, 6.7 L/100 km highway, and 7.8 L/100 km combined. The AWD test vehicle returned 9.2 L/100 km city and 7.1 L/100 km highway, with a combined observed figure of 8.0 L/100 km.

Which 2019 Toyota RAV4 trim should I buy?

The 2019 Toyota RAV4 is offered in 4 trim levels: LE, XLE, Trail, and Limited.

Here's the short version:

• LE: This is the value-focused starting point, and it already gives you standard heated front seats, LED lighting, Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and Apple CarPlay. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the RAV4 without giving up the core safety and tech features.
• XLE: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the equipment you are most likely to notice every day, including alloy wheels, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift lever, fog lights, a power moonroof, push-button start, a power liftgate, and dual-zone climate control. If you want the sweet spot between price and comfort, this is the one to target.
• Trail: Choose this if you want the more rugged personality and the standard torque-vectoring AWD setup. It adds unique styling, heated and ventilated front seats, upgraded roof rails, and the larger 8-inch infotainment screen, so it suits you if capability and a tougher look matter more than pure value.
• Limited: This is the upscale choice, with chrome-finished 19-inch wheels, passive entry, ambient lighting, heated rear seats, navigation, and a more premium cabin presentation. It makes sense if you want the most comfort and convenience features in the lineup.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard across the lineup, so you do not need to move up a trim just to get the core driver-assistance package.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Toyota RAV4?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you should be able to shop with some leverage.

• Deal availability: 28.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 477 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.04% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $26,547 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2019 Toyota RAV4's resale value?

The current average of $26,571 CAD sits slightly below last year's $28,893 CAD.

That softer pricing suggests the market has cooled a bit, which can help you buy more selectively now. For a future seller, it also means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and trim appeal rather than broad market momentum alone. Well-equipped examples with strong presentation should still attract attention, especially if they are priced near the lower end of the range.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2019 Toyota RAV4 safe?

The 2019 Toyota RAV4 earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS and five-star ratings from NHTSA.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes forward-collision warning, emergency braking, lane-departure warning, automatic high-beams, adaptive cruise control, and Lane-Tracing Assist. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are also standard equipment, which strengthens the RAV4’s safety case across the lineup.

Should I buy a 2019 Toyota RAV4 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2019 if:

• 28.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.04% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds bold styling, standard advanced safety features, and a bit of off-road ability.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $27,913 CAD, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $26,571 CAD average.
• It broadens the lineup with more configurations and a wider range of powertrain choices.

The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2019 is the smarter buy. If you are willing to pay more for a broader range of configurations, the 2020 is the better next step for price-insensitive shoppers.
