Is the 2019 Toyota RAV4 a good car?

Generally — the 2019 Toyota RAV4 earns a 4.48/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Safety.

Drivers consistently praise its great value, smooth ride, and spacious interior, while also liking its modern features and safety features. The RAV4’s adaptability for outdoor use also comes through as a recurring strength.

The trade-offs are familiar: the engine can feel underwhelming, and some owners feel that cheapened parts reduce the overall sense of quality. It is best suited to you if you want a practical small SUV for commuting, family duties, and road trips rather than driving excitement.

Toyota’s ownership appeal is reinforced by the model’s strong value focus and standard equipment. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright durability and more about whether the cabin quality and driving refinement meet your expectations over time.

What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Toyota RAV4?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The LE is the most basic version, but it still includes heated front seats, LED headlights, automatic high beams, and privacy-tinted windows. The XLE adds a power driver’s seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift lever, fog lights, a power moonroof, push-button start, a power liftgate, and dual-zone climate control. The Trail adds a more rugged look and equipment, while the Limited brings the most upscale cabin touches.
• Powertrain: Every trim uses a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard on the lower trims, while all-wheel drive is available; the Trail and Limited use the more advanced torque-vectoring AWD.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard, with forward-collision warning and emergency braking, lane-departure warning, automatic high-beams, adaptive cruise control, and Lane-Tracing Assist. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are also standard.
• Infotainment: The LE gets a 7-inch touchscreen with Entune 3.0, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, and a USB port. The XLE adds more USB ports, the Trail gets an 8-inch screen and upgraded instrument display, and the Limited can be equipped with JBL audio. Android Auto is not available.
• Fuel efficiency: The front-wheel-drive model is rated at 8.8 L/100 km in the city, 6.7 on the highway, and 7.8 combined. The AWD test vehicle returned 9.2 L/100 km city and 7.1 highway, with an observed combined figure of 8.0 L/100 km.

Which 2019 Toyota RAV4 trim should I buy?

The 2019 Toyota RAV4 is offered in 4 trim levels: LE, XLE, Trail, and Limited.

Here's the short version:

• LE: This is the value-focused starting point, and it already gives you heated front seats, LED lighting, automatic high beams, and Toyota Safety Sense 2.0. If you want the lowest entry price and can live without the extra convenience features, this is the trim to start with.
• XLE: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the most useful everyday upgrades, including a power driver’s seat, power moonroof, push-button start, power liftgate, dual-zone climate control, and more USB ports. CarGurus recommends this trim, and it is the one to target if you want the best balance of equipment and price.
• Trail: Choose this if you want the more rugged personality and the standard torque-vectoring AWD. It adds unique styling, heated and ventilated front seats, upgraded roof rails, and off-road-oriented hardware that gives the RAV4 more capability than the lower trims.
• Limited: This is the upscale choice, with chrome-finished wheels, passive entry, ambient lighting, heated rear seats, navigation, and available JBL audio. It suits you if comfort and premium touches matter more than value.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard across the lineup, so you do not need to move up a trim for the core driver-assistance suite.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Toyota RAV4?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you are patient.

• Deal availability: 30.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 505 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.25% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $26,554 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2019 Toyota RAV4's resale value?

The current average of $26,750 CAD sits slightly below last year's $28,840 CAD.

That softer pricing can be a good entry point for you as a buyer, but it also means a future seller may face a more competitive market if prices stay under pressure. The current range suggests the model is still holding meaningful value, just not at the same level it did a year ago. If you buy well now, you may have less downside risk than someone who paid closer to the previous average.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.48/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2019 Toyota RAV4 safe?

The 2019 Toyota RAV4 earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes a full array of front- and side-impact airbags, a backup camera, traction control, and a tire-pressure monitoring system. Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is also standard, bringing forward-collision warning and emergency braking, lane-departure warning, automatic high-beams, adaptive cruise control, and Lane-Tracing Assist. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard as well.

That broad standard safety list is one of the RAV4’s strongest selling points, and it helps explain why it appeals to shoppers who want a practical family SUV with a strong safety story.

Should I buy a 2019 Toyota RAV4 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2019 if:

• 30.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.25% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.48/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It adds bold styling, standard advanced safety features, and a bit of off-road ability.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $28,205 CAD, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $26,750 CAD average.
• It broadens the lineup with more configurations, including hybrid and XSE options.

The bottom line: If you want the better value play, the 2019 is the smarter buy because pricing has eased and the core safety and practicality story is strong. If you are willing to spend more for a wider range of trims and powertrains, the 2020 is the better path; price-sensitive buyers should stay focused on the 2019.
