CarGurus Analysis: 2019 Hyundai Elantra
overall

Summary
With 468 currently listed for sale and an average price of $12,783 CAD, 27.1% of 2019 Hyundai Elantras for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2019 Hyundai Elantra 4.5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.17 / 10.
100.0% of 2019 Elantra models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
Freshened up for 2019, the Hyundai Elantra remains an incredible value among compact sedans, but its updates do not address the car’s ho-hum driving dynamics. That makes it appealing to buyers who want a lot of car for the money, but less compelling if engaging road manners are a priority.
The 2019 Hyundai Elantra is also described as updated and upgraded, yet the overall impression is that satisfaction depends heavily on whether the driving experience works for you. The source singles out the turbocharged Sport trim as the exception, suggesting that this version is the one most likely to satisfy buyers looking for a more rewarding drive.

I think the features on this car is amazing and it is a great value. It is a good size, economical, just enough power and just enough weight to be stable and a fun little car to drive around the area when running errands or the quarterly work meeting, or just to the dog park and hanging with friends. It's nice looking, and a bit loud on the road sometimes but nothing a little sound barrier lining can't fix... or shocks.

This car was a good value. It has good acceleration and a quiet interior. Personally, I like the styling of this model better than the current model year.

The features are impeccable. I love that it has three different types of “drive”, I love all of the assist features, and the trunk is really big for a Saran plus the back seats can come down! I got the best deal I could find on this car and I got it in the color I wanted. I love it. The only thing I dislike is how low the ceiling is. The seat can lower but it still feels a little strange.

| Average Price a Year Ago | $15,478 CAD |

Prices have softened 17.56% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 477 listings available, which suggests you should have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2019 Hyundai Elantra a good car?
Yes — the 2019 Hyundai Elantra earns a 4.5/5 user rating and an 8.17/10 expert rating. The model scores 10/10 across Cost effectiveness and Technology.
Owners consistently praise its impressive features, smooth acceleration, and comfortable interior. The spacious trunk and driving assist features also come up often, which fits a compact sedan that works well for daily errands and longer trips. In use, it is best suited to you if you want a lot of car for the money rather than the most engaging road manners.
With 29.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2019 Hyundai Elantra reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with repeated praise for the car’s smooth operation and everyday usefulness. The expert assessment also frames it as a value-focused car that should not cause much aggravation in normal use.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about outright durability and more about whether the car’s driving character and cabin compromises will suit you over time.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Hyundai Elantra?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The sedan is sold as Essential, Preferred, Luxury, Sport, and Ultimate. The base Essential misses the 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert, so you should check whether the lower price is worth those gaps.
- Powertrain: Most versions use a 2.0-litre four-cylinder with 147 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque, paired with front-wheel drive. The automatic is the easier everyday choice, while the manual is available on lower trims.
- Safety package: Forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking and lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist start on Preferred. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a driver-monitoring system can be added through the Sun and Safety Package, and they are standard on higher trims. Ultimate adds adaptive cruise control, pedestrian detection, and Safe Exit Assist.
- Infotainment: The base Essential gets a rear-view camera and Bluetooth, while other trims add a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Ultimate upgrades to an 8-inch display, navigation, and an Infinity premium sound system.
- Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada says combined fuel consumption is 7.4 L/100 km with the automatic and 8.0 L/100 km with the manual.
Which 2019 Hyundai Elantra trim should I buy?
The 2019 Hyundai Elantra is offered in 5 trim levels: Essential, Preferred, Luxury, Sport, and Ultimate.
Here's the short version:
- Essential: This is the cheapest way into the Elantra, but you give up a lot of the convenience and safety equipment that makes the car appealing. It makes sense only if price is your top priority.
- Preferred: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus key safety equipment that the base car lacks.
- Luxury: This trim adds satellite radio and more comfort and convenience equipment, making it a good step up if you want a more polished daily driver.
- Sport: This is the trim to consider if you want the more rewarding drive mentioned in the model overview. It is the exception for shoppers who care more about driving feel.
- Ultimate: This is the most fully equipped version, with the 8-inch screen, navigation, premium audio, adaptive cruise control, pedestrian detection, and Safe Exit Assist. It is the right pick if you want the most features and are willing to pay for them.
For safety, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on all trims except the base Essential.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Hyundai Elantra?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 29.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 477 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 17.56% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $12,761 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Hyundai Elantra's resale value?
The current average of $12,761 CAD sits slightly below last year's $15,478 CAD.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can make the car easier to buy now but may also limit upside for a future seller. If you purchase at the current average, you are starting from a lower valuation base than owners had a year ago.
For resale, the Elantra’s value will depend heavily on condition, trim, and equipment level. Better-equipped versions with stronger feature content should be easier to market later, especially if they remain clean and well maintained.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2019 Hyundai Elantra safe?
The 2019 Hyundai Elantra gets top marks across the board from the IIHS, except for an Acceptable rating for the accessibility of its LATCH child-seat anchors. It also earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, thanks to four-star frontal-impact results and a four-star side-impact protection rating for rear-seat occupants.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Most versions include forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking and lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a driver-monitoring system can be added through the Sun and Safety Package, and they are standard on higher trims. Ultimate adds adaptive cruise control, pedestrian detection, and Safe Exit Assist.
The main caveat is that the LATCH anchor accessibility result is weaker than the rest of the crash-test performance, so you should pay attention if you plan to install child seats regularly.
Should I buy a 2019 Hyundai Elantra or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 29.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 17.56% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2019 refresh adds updated styling and more available safety and tech features.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $15,041 CAD, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $12,761 CAD average.
- It adds improved fuel efficiency and newly packaged safety features.
The bottom line: You should lean toward the 2019 if you want the better value and are comfortable shopping around for the right trim. If you are willing to spend more for a later model with added safety packaging and efficiency updates, the 2020 is the better alternative.
