Is the 2019 Hyundai Elantra a good car?

Yes — you’re looking at a 4.5/5 user-rated car with an expert score of 8.2/10. The model scores 10/10 across Cost effectiveness and Technology.

What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Hyundai Elantra?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The sedan comes in Essential, Preferred, Luxury, Sport, and Ultimate trims. The base Essential is the most stripped-down version, while higher trims add more convenience and safety equipment. If you want the best balance of features and value, the mid-to-upper trims are the ones to focus on.
• Powertrain: The standard setup is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder with 147 horsepower and front-wheel drive, paired with a six-speed automatic on most versions. The manual transmission is standard on Essential and Preferred, while the automatic is optional on those trims and standard on Luxury and Ultimate.
• Safety package: Forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking and lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist start on Preferred. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a driver-monitoring system can be added through the Sun and Safety Package, and those features are standard on higher trims. Adaptive cruise control, pedestrian-detection enhancement, and Safe Exit are reserved for Ultimate.
• Infotainment: The base Essential gets a rear-view camera and Bluetooth. Other trims add a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while Ultimate upgrades to an 8-inch display, navigation, and an Infinity premium sound system.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada says the automatic version uses 7.4 L/100 km in combined driving, while the manual is rated at 8.0 L/100 km.

Which 2019 Hyundai Elantra trim should I buy?

The 2019 Hyundai Elantra is offered in 5 trim levels: Essential, Preferred, Luxury, Sport, and Ultimate.

Here's the short version:

• Essential: This is the entry point if you want the lowest purchase price, but it’s also the most basic version. It makes sense if you’re focused on affordability above all else and are comfortable giving up some convenience and safety equipment.
• Preferred: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the key safety and convenience upgrades without pushing you into the highest price range. It’s the trim to target if you want a smarter balance of equipment and cost.
• Luxury: This trim adds more comfort and tech, including satellite radio and the free Bluelink trial. It suits you if you want a more polished daily driver without going all the way to the top trim.
• Sport: This is the trim to consider if you want the turbocharged character mentioned in the expert summary. It’s the one that stands apart for buyers who care more about driving feel than pure value.
• Ultimate: This is the most fully equipped version, with the 8-inch screen, navigation, premium audio, adaptive cruise control, pedestrian-detection braking, and Safe Exit. Choose it if you want the most complete Elantra experience.

Higher trims also bring more of the safety equipment standard, while the base Essential misses some of the driver-assistance features found elsewhere in the range.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Hyundai Elantra?

This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully and compare listings.

• Deal availability: 28.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 450 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 19.37% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $12,221 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2019 Hyundai Elantra's resale value?

The current average of $12,306 CAD sits slightly below last year's $15,263 CAD.

That softer pricing means the Elantra is currently a buyer-friendly used car, but it also suggests future sellers may face more competition if the market stays well supplied. If you buy at today’s average, your resale upside will depend heavily on trim, condition, mileage, and how well the car has been maintained.

Because the model has strong owner satisfaction and broad appeal as a practical compact sedan, demand should remain reasonably steady. Well-equipped examples with good service records are likely to hold buyer interest better than bare-bones versions.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2019 Hyundai Elantra safe?

The 2019 Hyundai Elantra gets top marks across the board from IIHS, except for an Acceptable rating for the accessibility of its LATCH child-seat anchors. It earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, thanks to four-star frontal-impact results and a four-star side-impact protection rating for rear-seat occupants.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

The Elantra includes forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking and lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist starting on Preferred. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a driver-monitoring system are available through the Sun and Safety Package, and those features are standard on higher trims. Adaptive cruise control, pedestrian-detection braking enhancement, and Safe Exit are reserved for Ultimate.

Should I buy a 2019 Hyundai Elantra or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2019 if:

• 28.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 19.37% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2019 update gives the Elantra a more polished feel while keeping its value-first appeal.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $14,645 CAD, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $12,306 CAD average.
• It adds improved fuel efficiency and newly packaged safety features.

The bottom line: If you want the better bargain, the 2019 is the smarter buy because it combines a lower average price with strong owner satisfaction and plenty of listings to compare. If you’re willing to spend more for a slightly newer model with added efficiency and safety packaging, the 2020 is the better secondary path.

How does the 2019 Hyundai Elantra compare to the 2019 Honda Civic?

Our experts score the 2019 Hyundai Elantra 8.2/10 and the 2019 Honda Civic 7.8/10. The Elantra is the stronger value play, with a much lower average used price and a higher share of good or great deals. The Civic brings more horsepower and more listings, but you pay significantly more for it. If you want the better bargain and a well-equipped compact sedan, the Elantra makes the stronger case.
