Is the 2019 Ford Ranger a good car?

Yes — the 2019 Ford Ranger earns a 4.5/5 user rating and a 7.2/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise its robust performance, advanced technology, good fuel economy, responsive engine, and towing capacity. In practical terms, that lines up well with the Ranger’s role as a midsize pickup for hauling, weekend projects, and everyday use. You also get a straightforward setup with a single engine and transmission, which can make shopping simpler than with rivals that offer more complicated powertrain choices.

There are 27.6% good or great deals in the market, which gives you some room to find a well-priced example.

Is the 2019 Ford Ranger reliable?

Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback points to a truck that feels robust, dependable, and good for long-term use, with many drivers saying they can count on its performance and towing ability. The expert assessment also supports that impression by describing the 2.3-litre EcoBoost as a stout, eager engine, and noting that concerns about early head-gasket issues were tied to a different application and have long been resolved.

Ford’s cost-effectiveness commentary also reinforces the idea that the Ranger makes sense as a durable, capable pickup when you keep to the right trim and option mix. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about the core powertrain and more about finding a truck that has been maintained properly and not over-optioned beyond its value.

What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Ford Ranger?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base XL is the most stripped-down version, with steel 16-inch wheels, a manual-locking tailgate, cloth upholstery, and a spartan four-speaker stereo, but it still includes a rear-view camera, USB port, and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking. Higher trims add more comfort and convenience, with the XLT bringing a 4.2-inch centre screen, Ford Sync, an upgraded six-speaker stereo, and the option to add Sync 3, while the Lariat adds leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, an upgraded 8-inch touchscreen, and 18-inch alloys.
• Powertrain: You’re looking at a single 2.3-litre EcoBoost turbo engine paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. It’s described as stout and eager, with strong real-world performance, and the fuel economy is competitive for the class at 10.9 L/100 km combined, 11.8 L/100 km city, and 9.8 L/100 km highway.
• Safety package: Ford Co-Pilot360 adds auto high beams, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and trailer tow monitoring, lane-keep warning and assist, forward and reverse parking sensors, and a 110-volt power outlet. The base XL already includes forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, but some of the more advanced driver aids are optional rather than standard.
• Infotainment: The XLT can be equipped with Ford Sync 3, which adds Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and SiriusXM. The system is described as capable and easy to use, and the Ranger also offers a 4G Wi-Fi hotspot and an optional Bang & Olufsen stereo.
• Fuel efficiency: The Ranger is rated at 10.9 L/100 km combined, 11.8 L/100 km city, and 9.8 L/100 km highway.

Which 2019 Ford Ranger trim should I buy?

The 2019 Ford Ranger is offered in 3 trim levels: XL, XLT, Lariat.

Here's the short version:

• XL: This is the value play if you want the lowest entry point and can live with a basic cabin. It still gives you useful standard equipment like a rear-view camera, USB port, and automatic emergency braking, and it can be upgraded with useful safety and convenience packages.
• XLT: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds a more complete feature set, including a larger screen, upgraded stereo, and the ability to add Sync 3 with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. If you want a better balance of price and equipment, this is the one to focus on.
• Lariat: Choose this if you want the most comfort and convenience, with leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, an upgraded 8-inch touchscreen, and 18-inch alloys. It suits you best if you plan to use the Ranger as a more premium daily driver.

The safety package note to keep in mind is that Co-Pilot360 is available on lower trims, while the base XL already includes forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Ford Ranger?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.

• Deal availability: 27.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 116 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 14.83% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $27,198 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2019 Ford Ranger's resale value?

The current average of $27,210 CAD sits slightly below last year's $31,949 CAD.

That price movement suggests the Ranger has become more accessible for used buyers, which can help demand in the near term. For a future seller, it also means you may need to price carefully if you want to stand out against a market that has already adjusted downward. The good news is that the Ranger’s strong reputation for capability and efficiency should help support interest from shoppers who want a practical midsize pickup.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2019 Ford Ranger safe?

The 2019 Ford Ranger with 4WD earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, and IIHS scores it as Good in most tests except the small front-overlap on the passenger side, where it scores Acceptable, and the headlights, which score as Marginal.

It earns a 5/10 safety score from our experts.

Ford’s available safety systems include forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and trailer tow monitoring, lane-keep warning and assist, auto high beams, and forward and reverse parking sensors. The base XL includes some key active-safety tech, but the more comprehensive driver-assistance suite is tied to available packages and higher trims.

The main caveat is the Marginal headlight result, along with the less-than-perfect pedestrian front crash prevention result in IIHS testing.

Should I buy a 2019 Ford Ranger or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2019 if:

• 27.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 14.83% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It returns to North America with a simple single-engine setup and strong value positioning.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $29,820 CAD, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $27,210 CAD average.
• It blends capability with technology and adds a more polished overall cabin impression.

The bottom line: If you want the better value proposition, the 2019 is the smarter buy because prices have eased and owner satisfaction is strong. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer model year, the 2020 is worth a look, but price-sensitive buyers should start with the 2019.
