CarGurus Analysis: 2018 Hyundai Kona

Summary
With 160 currently listed for sale and an average price of $15,254 CAD, 30.0% of 2018 Hyundai Kona listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 Hyundai Kona 4.7 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2018 Hyundai Kona stood out in the subcompact SUV class with styling that was meant to be distinctive, a turbocharged engine option paired with a high-tech dual-clutch automatic transmission, and a generous amount of equipment for the money. It also offered all-wheel drive, which was not always the case among its rivals. For buyers who wanted a small SUV that felt a little more interesting than the norm, the Kona’s combination of personality and value was a major part of its appeal.
Even the base 2018 Kona was fairly well equipped, with features such as heated front seats, keyless entry, a rearview camera, Bluetooth connectivity with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The turbocharged version brought stronger output and standard all-wheel drive, while higher trims added items such as leather upholstery, a power driver’s seat, lane keep assist, automatic emergency braking, a head-up display, wireless phone charging, and an Infinity premium audio system. That said, the first-generation Kona was also described as cramped inside and short on cargo space, so its strengths were more about equipment, character, and available performance than outright roominess.

Id compare this car to a Crosstrek. It feels solid and responsive has enough room for an adult passenger with a car seat in the back. Its a great value for the price which may be why I had trouble finding one that fit me. The crash ratings are also reassuring. The sport mode gives you some nice boost when/if needed and makes everything feel better while on the road. The lane assist is taking a little bit to get used to as it nudges steering to keep within the lines.

Very nice small SUV. Handled well while test driving. Decent pep while accelerating on highway.

| Year-Round High | $17,656 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $17,656 CAD |

Is the 2018 Hyundai Kona a good car?
Yes — the 2018 Hyundai Kona earns a 4.7/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. It stands out in the subcompact SUV class with distinctive styling, a generous amount of equipment for the money, and available all-wheel drive, so it suits you well if you want a small SUV with more personality than the norm. Its appeal is strongest if you value features and character over maximum space, since it was also described as cramped inside and short on cargo room. With 35.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding a competitive offer.
Is the 2018 Hyundai Kona reliable?
Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The Kona’s appeal comes from its well-equipped cabin, available all-wheel drive, and strong value proposition, which can make it feel like a smart ownership choice if those are your priorities. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that a first-generation model with a lot of equipment can be more sensitive to how well it was maintained.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Hyundai Kona?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can be patient and still find a solid example.
- Deal availability: 35.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 173 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 13.39% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $15,050 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Hyundai Kona's resale value?
The current average of $15,292 CAD sits slightly below last year's $17,656 CAD.
That price movement suggests the Kona has become more accessible for used buyers, but it also means a future seller may need to price competitively to stand out. If you buy at today’s average, your resale position will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the vehicle has been maintained. Because the model still has broad appeal as a well-equipped small SUV, demand should remain reasonably steady if your example is clean and properly cared for.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2018 Hyundai Kona or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 35.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 13.39% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: You should lean toward the 2018 if you want a distinctive, well-equipped small SUV and you can live with its tighter cabin and limited cargo space. If your priority is simply getting the best value, a nearby year may still be worth comparing, but the 2018 is a sensible pick when you find one priced near the lower end of the market.
