CarGurus Analysis: 2018 Chevrolet Malibu

Summary
With 82 currently listed for sale and an average price of $13,160 CAD, 29.3% of 2018 Chevrolet Malibu listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 Chevrolet Malibu 5 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2018 Chevrolet Malibu stands out as a roomy, good-value midsize sedan with a more polished feel than earlier Malibus. By this generation, Chevrolet had given it sleek styling, a longer wheelbase, and an overall length that helped create a larger, more open-feeling back seat, even though trunk space was slightly smaller. It was also offered with a broad spread of trims and technology, including a hybrid model, which gave buyers a range of choices in a segment where practicality matters.
For 2018, the Malibu’s standard engine was a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with 163 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and rated at 7.6 L/100 km combined. Buyers could also choose a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with 250 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, while the hybrid combined a 1.8-litre four-cylinder with a 76-kW electric motor for 182 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque and a combined fuel economy rating of 5.1 litres per 100 kilometres. The car’s infotainment setup was another strength, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on a seven-inch screen, an optional eight-inch screen on upper trims, and available wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity added later in the generation.
The 2018 Malibu also offered a useful set of available safety and driver-assistance features, including lane-keeping assist, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and front and rear park assist. Its main drawback is that some of the more desirable equipment was not standard, and the 2.0-litre turbo was reserved for the top Premier trim. Even so, this Malibu’s combination of comfort, efficiency, and available technology makes it appealing for shoppers who want a sensible family sedan with a more upscale edge than many rivals.

The premier One of the NICEST vehicles I’ve ever driven. Coming from someone who’s previously owned a Mercedes S600. The quality for the price point is insane on the Malibu premier. It floats like a cloud at highway speeds, has extremely comfortable heated and cooled leather seats, and the air system is top notch. To top everything off, the Malibu Premier is one of the absolute quickest sedans under 40k if not the quickest. 0-100 yesterday. Need to pass someone on the highway? Done in a split second and you didn’t even spill a drop of your open coffee in the cup holder. After driving one, I CANNOT see how people settle for base models, or even worse, something as junk as a Kia or Hyundai instead of opting for a nice quality sedan. Spend your money wisely and get a Malibu premier.

| Year-Round Low | $12,689 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $15,057 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $14,684 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −9.99% |

Is the 2018 Chevrolet Malibu a good car?
Yes — 5/5 is a strong user rating for this Malibu, and it lines up with the model’s appeal as a roomy, good-value midsize sedan. Owners consistently praise the comfortable ride, impressive fuel economy, and the upscale feel of the Premier trim, while the available technology adds to its everyday usefulness.
That makes it a sensible choice if you want a practical family sedan with a more polished feel, a larger back seat, and useful infotainment features. With 29.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, you also have a decent chance of finding a competitively priced example.
Is the 2018 Chevrolet Malibu reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a car that feels dependable in daily use, with praise centred on comfort, efficiency, and a trouble-free ownership experience. The lack of specific complaints in the review summary also suggests that many drivers feel confident counting on it over time.
For used buyers, that kind of response lowers the perceived risk of long-term ownership, especially if you focus on well-maintained examples with complete service records.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Chevrolet Malibu?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can be patient and still have options.
- Deal availability: 29.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 84 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.99% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $12,689 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Chevrolet Malibu's resale value?
The current average of $13,217 CAD sits slightly below last year's $14,684 CAD.
That softer pricing can be a mixed signal for future resale. On one hand, it means you may have a better entry point today, which helps if you plan to own the car for several years. On the other hand, a lower current market value can limit how much room there is for appreciation later.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2018 Chevrolet Malibu or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 29.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.99% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2018 Malibu is the better pick if you want a comfortable, spacious sedan with strong owner approval and a market that currently favours careful shoppers. If your priority is stretching your budget as far as possible, you may want to compare nearby years and focus on whichever one gives you the best combination of condition, price, and equipment.
