Is the 2017 Volkswagen Golf a good car?

Yes — 5/5 is a strong user rating for this model year. The 2017 Volkswagen Golf is described as a very well-equipped hot hatch that combines strong performance, all-wheel-drive grip, and a relatively discreet, easy-to-live-with package. It also stands out for its practical five-door layout and broad standard equipment, which makes it appealing if you want performance without giving up everyday usability.

With 30.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a meaningful chance of finding a competitively priced example.

Is the 2017 Volkswagen Golf reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The 2017 Volkswagen Golf is described as having a fairly solid reputation for reliability, but coolant leaks and water pump failures are not unknown, and you should listen for rattling from under the hood that could point to a stretched timing chain. That means a careful inspection and maintenance review matter, especially if you plan to keep the car for the long term.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Volkswagen Golf?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile options.

• Deal availability: 30.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 130 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.02% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $11,803 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Volkswagen Golf's resale value?

The current average of $12,720 CAD sits slightly below last year's $13,981 CAD.

That price movement suggests the market has eased, which can make the car more attractive to used buyers today but may also limit upside for a future seller if values continue to soften. If you buy at the right price and keep the car well maintained, you can help protect your position when it comes time to resell. Strong equipment and broad appeal can support demand, especially for shoppers who want performance and practicality in one package.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Should I buy a 2017 Volkswagen Golf or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 30.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.02% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.

The bottom line: If you want a well-equipped, performance-focused hatchback with strong everyday usability, the 2017 is the primary year to target. If you are more price-sensitive, a nearby model year may be worth considering, but the 2017’s combination of softened pricing and strong owner satisfaction makes it the better starting point for most shoppers.
