CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Toyota 4Runner

Summary
With 20 currently listed for sale and an average price of $30,611 CAD, 25.0% of 2017 Toyota 4Runner listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Toyota 4Runner 4.5 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Toyota 4Runner stands out as a rugged midsize SUV that still leans hard into off-road capability. It kept the body-on-frame construction that made the 4Runner a favourite among buyers who want durability and trail-ready hardware, and it also came standard with four-wheel drive in Canada. For shoppers who value toughness and resale strength over car-like manners, that combination is a major part of its appeal.
For 2017, the 4Runner’s equipment was still fairly straightforward, but it offered useful capability-focused features. The Trail Edition became the TRD Off-Road in 2017, and the TRD Pro package appeared that year with exclusive colour options, TRD Bilstein shocks, TRD-tuned front springs, and a TRD front skid plate. Standard equipment across the generation included power windows and door locks, a multi-information display, and 10 cup holders, while available features included satellite radio, Bluetooth, a JBL audio system, leather seats, and heated front seats. Buyers also got Downhill Assist Control and Toyota’s A-TRAC active traction control, which reinforces the 4Runner’s off-road focus.
There are trade-offs, though. The 4Runner’s strengths are matched by poor on-road handling and fuel economy, so it is not the best choice if most driving happens in the city or on the highway. Still, owner feedback lines up with its reputation: reliability, ruggedness, solid construction, off-road ability, and long-lasting value are the qualities that keep the 2017 Toyota 4Runner appealing.

I thought this was a very solid purchase. Ive owned the vehicle for about 5 years and have been happy with the purchase. My only complaint is that I thought the sound system could have been a little better. It was still good but I like to listen to my music loud so it would most likely be satisfactory for most people

4Runner is the last of the real SUV’s….in a world flooded with cutesy crossovers and bloated luxury barges, the 4Runner stands alone as a rugged, do it all vehicle. Simplicity and quality will always outshine “tech” and disposability.

How much does the 2017 Toyota 4Runner cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $33,478 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $32,448 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $35,820 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $35,095 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −4.61% |
Prices have softened 4.61% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 103 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2017 Toyota 4Runner a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Toyota 4Runner earns a 4.5/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its reliability, ruggedness, solid construction, off-road capability, and long-lasting value. That makes sense if you want a tough, body-on-frame SUV with standard four-wheel drive in Canada and a clear focus on durability over car-like refinement. With 31.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have some room to shop carefully.
Is the 2017 Toyota 4Runner reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback repeatedly highlights reliability, ruggedness, solid construction, and long-lasting value, which is exactly the kind of language you want to see when you are considering a used SUV for extended ownership. The 4Runner’s reputation for being dependable and trouble-free is a major part of its appeal, especially if you plan to keep it for years. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about the vehicle’s core toughness and more about accepting its older-school compromises in everyday use.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Toyota 4Runner?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you are patient and focused.
- Deal availability: 31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 103 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.61% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $32,448 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?
The current average of $33,478 CAD sits slightly below last year's $35,095 CAD.
That price movement suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you as a buyer today but may also mean future sellers need to price more competitively. Even so, the 4Runner’s reputation for ruggedness and long-lasting value should continue to support demand. If you buy well now, you are starting from a price point that still reflects the model’s strong reputation without paying last year’s higher average.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.61% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: If you want the 4Runner’s rugged, off-road-first character and you value strong owner satisfaction, the 2017 is a sensible year to target. If you are especially price-sensitive, you can also compare nearby years to see whether a lower asking price outweighs any differences in availability or condition. For most shoppers, the 2017 is the better fit when durability and resale strength matter more than everyday refinement.
