Why it stands out
The 2017 Subaru Outback stands out as a practical, roomy, and highly capable vehicle that blends wagon usefulness with crossover appeal. Subaru’s long-running all-wheel drive system is a core part of its identity, and the Outback has also been a leader in showing off the brand’s newer technology. For this generation, the model’s safety and capability remain central to its appeal, and owners consistently praise its comfortable ride, spacious interior, reliability, and all-weather confidence.
What makes the 2017 Outback especially distinctive is how much useful equipment it offers without losing its easygoing character. The Outback’s EyeSight driver-assist suite is part of its broader safety story, and the model’s cabin is designed around everyday practicality. At the same time, some buyers may find the engine a bit underpowered, particularly the 2.5-litre version, and the infotainment system is not universally loved. Even so, the 2017 Subaru Outback remains appealing because it delivers the kind of space, traction, and durability that many used-car shoppers want in a family vehicle.

I love this car. The exterior is beautiful, and the interior looks $10k above its class. I’m changing all of the interior lights to led because the yellow incandescent glow looks out of place. Some of the included features, like lane departure warning and blind spot monitoring, seem unnecessary, but probably welcome inclusions for someone with less than stellar driving. Overall, 8/10. I will definitely be keeping it until repairs become too expensive.

Good solid car to replace Hyundai Santa Fe that was totaled from Hurricane Helene. The 4 cylinder is peppy and for the first tank, getting great gas mileage. It will be easier on the wallet and goes farther on an 18 gallon tank than the Santa Fe.

I believe that the car has many nice features to enjoy, but will have to learn and acquire the knowledge as how to use these features as time permits. I want to be better and more comfortable knowing where everything is after driving Hondas for more than 30 years, this is my 1st Subaru

Excellent car,it has the 3.6 in it,It tows my trailers effortlessly. Its incredible in the snow.We have had an Impreza, and 2 Foresters, all have been excellent, but the Outback is by far our favorite. Other than oil changes tires and brakes repairs have been limited to wheel bearing on the Impreza, after 16 years of owning it.One of the best cars around in my opinion, and Ive been a mechanic since 1976

| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $14,426 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $14,426 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $17,586 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $17,552 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −17.81% |

There are 159 listings available, which gives you a reasonable amount of inventory to compare before you decide.
Is the 2017 Subaru Outback a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Subaru Outback earns a 4.65/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its safety features, spacious interior, reliability, comfortable ride, and AWD capability. That makes it a strong fit if you want a practical, roomy vehicle with all-weather confidence for family use and everyday driving. With 26.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have some room to shop carefully.
Is the 2017 Subaru Outback reliable?
Owners rate it 4.65/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback highlights reliability, and many drivers describe the Outback as dependable and trouble-free in regular use. That kind of praise matters if you want a vehicle you can count on for commuting, family duty, and changing weather. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure the specific vehicle has been maintained well, since condition matters more as these vehicles age.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Subaru Outback?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but should move quickly on the best-priced examples.
- Deal availability: 26.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 159 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 17.81% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $14,426 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Subaru Outback's resale value?
The current average of $14,426 CAD sits slightly below last year's $17,552 CAD.
That price movement suggests the market has become more favourable for buyers, but it also means future sellers may need to price competitively to stand out. If you buy well now, you may have less downside risk than someone who paid closer to last year's average. The Outback's broad appeal should help support demand, especially among shoppers who value space, safety, and all-weather usability.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.65/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Subaru Outback or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 26.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 17.81% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.65/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2017 is a smart choice if you want a well-liked Outback with strong owner satisfaction and a softer price than last year. If your priority is stretching your budget as far as possible, you may also want to compare nearby years and focus on the best-priced listing rather than the newest one.
