CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Subaru Legacy
Summary
With 56 currently listed for sale and an average price of $13,354 CAD, 28.6% of 2017 Subaru Legacy listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Subaru Legacy 5 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Subaru Legacy stands out as a midsize sedan that makes all-wheel drive part of the package rather than an upgrade. In its generation, Subaru kept AWD standard across all models, and the Legacy also offered a more advanced and refined driving experience than before, with a quieter interior, a stiffer chassis, and better ride quality. It was also one of the more technically ambitious versions of the car, with EyeSight standard, a large 11.6-inch vertical touchscreen infotainment system, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto included on the standard equipment list for this generation.
For 2017 specifically, the Legacy was available in Canada in Convenience, Touring, Limited, and Premier trims, with the top two GT-format trims getting the turbo engine. Standard equipment included adaptive cruise control, automatic climate control, LED headlights with automatic high beams, a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats, and dual seven-inch centre touchscreens. The Touring trim added an 11.6-inch infotainment screen, 17-inch alloy wheels, LED fog lights, dual-zone climate control, keyless entry, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a sunroof, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, reverse automatic braking, and lane change assist. That mix of standard safety gear and useful comfort features helps explain why the Legacy appealed to buyers looking for a practical sedan with a strong safety focus.
There are still a few trade-offs. The Legacy’s styling was described as dull, its interior could feel cheap, and performance was considered sluggish. Even so, for shoppers who value standard AWD, a comfortable cabin, and a long list of safety and convenience features, the 2017 Subaru Legacy remains a distinctive choice in the used midsize sedan market.

For the year, the car has a great amount of modern features. Drives great in the snow, is comfortable with plenty of room, driver assistance features all worked as they should. The only thing missing is Apple CarPlay/android auto. You simply cannot compare anything to the Legacy. Maybe a BMW 5 Series. In terms of value - the legacy wins every time.

How much does the 2017 Subaru Legacy cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $13,377 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $12,155 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $15,248 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $14,956 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −10.55% |
Prices have softened 10.55% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 55 listings available, which suggests a modest amount of inventory for shoppers to compare.
Is the 2017 Subaru Legacy a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Subaru Legacy earns a 5/5 user rating, which points to very strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its all-wheel drive, fuel efficiency, and high safety ratings, and many also like the comfortable interior and user-friendly technology. That fits well if you want a practical midsize sedan with standard AWD and a strong safety focus. With 25.5% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Subaru Legacy reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with repeated praise for the car’s all-wheel drive, fuel efficiency, and high safety ratings. For used buyers, that kind of long-term confidence can reduce the risk of unpleasant surprises, especially if you prioritise a sedan you can count on year-round.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Subaru Legacy?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can afford to compare listings carefully rather than rush.
- Deal availability: 25.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 55 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.55% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $12,155 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Subaru Legacy's resale value?
The current average of $13,377 CAD sits slightly below last year's $14,956 CAD.
That price movement suggests the market has softened, which can make the car easier to buy now but may also limit upside if you plan to sell soon. If you purchase at the right price, you may be better positioned to protect your value later. Strong owner satisfaction can help support demand when it is time to resell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Subaru Legacy or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 25.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.55% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2017 Legacy makes the most sense if you want a used midsize sedan with standard all-wheel drive, strong owner satisfaction, and a market that still offers some deal opportunities. If you are especially price-sensitive, you may want to compare nearby years and focus on whichever one gives you the best combination of condition, mileage, and asking price.
