CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Nissan Sentra
Summary
With 22 currently listed for sale and an average price of $9,147 CAD, 63.6% of 2017 Nissan Sentra listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Nissan Sentra 5 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Nissan Sentra sits within the seventh-generation run, which was introduced for the 2013 model year and continued through 2019. For 2017, Nissan added a more performance-focused option in the Sentra SR Turbo, giving the car a 188-horsepower turbocharged 1.6-litre engine along with sporty tuning for the suspension, steering, and brakes. That makes this model year stand out from the rest of the range as the one aimed most directly at drivers who wanted a livelier compact sedan without moving away from the Sentra nameplate.
Even outside the turbocharged version, the 2017 Nissan Sentra still offered the practical, value-oriented character that defined this generation. The broader seventh-generation design was described as more spacious and more fuel-efficient than before, and the model line included S, SV, SR, and SL trim levels. Buyers also had the choice of a six-speed manual transmission on the S and SV models, while other versions used a revised CVT. That CVT is also the main drawback to keep in mind, since this generation is noted for transmission-related complaints and is considered the least reliable Sentra era in the guide.
For shoppers, the appeal of a 2017 Nissan Sentra is the combination of everyday usability, good fuel economy, and a lower used-car price than many rivals. Owners commonly praise it for being reliable, efficient, smooth to drive, and attractive, but the transmission concerns are a real part of the ownership story. If you want a compact sedan with sensible running costs and the option of a more engaging turbocharged variant, the 2017 Sentra has a distinctive place in the lineup.

Was my first car purchase. Everything I could want in a compact sedan for myself. Only got rid out if because the transmission blew out. Wouldnt get another due to Nissan specifically CVT Transmissions.

This car is very nice and amazing for a single person needing it for personal use. The gas mileage is great, if youre not planning to drive to many places other than work or the store. Highly recommend this car if you find one in good condition.

How much does the 2017 Nissan Sentra cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $9,648 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $9,648 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $11,761 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $11,225 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −14.05% |
Prices have softened 14.05% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 144 listings available, which suggests you should have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2017 Nissan Sentra a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Nissan Sentra earns a 5/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners commonly praise its reliability, efficiency, smooth driving experience, and favourable aesthetics. It fits well if you want a practical compact sedan that focuses on value, comfort, and everyday usability rather than flash. With 34.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Nissan Sentra reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback describes it as reliable, efficient, and trouble-free for many drivers, with a reputation for dependable day-to-day use and strong gas mileage. That said, some owners mention CVT-related concerns, so used buyers should pay close attention to transmission behaviour and service history before committing to long-term ownership.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Nissan Sentra?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can afford to compare listings carefully before moving quickly.
- Deal availability: 34.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 144 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 14.05% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $9,648 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Nissan Sentra's resale value?
The current average of $9,648 CAD sits slightly below last year's $11,225 CAD.
That softer pricing can help you buy in at a more favourable point, but it also means future resale gains may be limited if the market stays soft. For a seller, the current trend suggests you may need to price competitively to stand out. Strong value positioning can still help, especially if the car has been well maintained and presents cleanly.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Nissan Sentra or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 34.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 14.05% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2017 Nissan Sentra makes the most sense if you want a practical, value-focused compact sedan and you can find one priced near the lower end of the market. If you are especially price-sensitive, nearby model years may also be worth comparing, but the 2017 stands out when you want a balance of owner satisfaction, current discounts, and everyday usability.
