CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Mazda CX-9
Summary
With 57 currently listed for sale and an average price of $18,148 CAD, 26.3% of 2017 Mazda CX-9 listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Mazda CX-9 5 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Mazda CX-9 stands out for putting a sporty driving feel and a premium presentation ahead of the usual family-SUV formula. Mazda’s approach gives it a more engaging character than many rivals, while the cabin aims for a stylish, upscale look rather than maximum space. That trade-off is part of its appeal: buyers who value design, a refined interior, and a more enjoyable drive will likely find it especially attractive.
It is also distinctive for the way Mazda equips it. The CX-9 uses all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission, and it includes Mazda Intelligent Drive Select with Sport and Off-Road modes, plus Kinematic Posture Control. The infotainment setup is less universally appealing, though, because Mazda’s knob-and-button interface can feel fiddly and only works as a touchscreen when used with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. The CX-9’s smaller interior than class leaders and its ride that borders on stiff are worth keeping in mind, but for shoppers who want a three-row SUV with a more premium feel and a sportier personality, it has a clear identity.

This was our Goldilocks car. Not too big. Not too small. Has all the features we needed and cared about. The third row option is super helpful given we don’t need it all the time, but it’s great to have for trips or when we load up all the kids and dogs and all our belongings to go visit family. It’s ZIPPY. Great acceleration and a firm but not harsh drive. Very responsive and honestly I’m a little obsessed. The safety ratings really sold me. That was the most important thing to me and after watching a lot of crash test footage I was sold. I honestly don’t feel like my car is missing anything. I didn’t care to have lane assist or anything like that so the touring was great for us with blind spot detection and back up camera. LOVE THE SEAT WARMERS. I’m practically a lizard. Give me the heat. Lol I feel like it compares well to the Highlander. About the same situation in the third row (although I felt like I had slightly more room in the cx-9) and a better trunk situation with the hidden compartment and cubbies in the side. Overall, I love it. A whole lot. As a mom of three with kids out of anchored car seats and one full back booster and one seat only booster and a huge 8 year old….it’s perfect. (My neighbor has the same car with two littles in car seats and she absolutely loves her cx-9 as well.) great family option while still feeling fun.

Everything I’m looking for! The European sleek design inside and out, without the hefty price tag that normally comes with a luxury vehicle.

How much does the 2017 Mazda CX-9 cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $18,144 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $18,143 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $20,992 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $20,972 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −13.49% |
Prices have softened 13.49% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 57 listings available, which suggests a modest amount of inventory for shoppers comparing options.
Is the 2017 Mazda CX-9 a good car?
Yes — the 5/5 user rating points to strong owner approval. The 2017 Mazda CX-9 stands out for putting a sporty driving feel and a premium presentation ahead of the usual family-SUV formula, so it makes sense if you want a three-row SUV with a more engaging character and a stylish, upscale cabin rather than maximum space. Its clear identity will appeal most if you value design and a refined interior over the most practical packaging. With 26.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still some market opportunity if you shop carefully.
Is the 2017 Mazda CX-9 reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Mazda’s approach gives the CX-9 a distinctive, well-equipped feel, and its premium presentation helps it stand apart from more ordinary family SUVs. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that its less universally appealing infotainment setup and firmer ride may matter more over time if you prioritise everyday ease and comfort.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Mazda CX-9?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can be patient and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 26.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 57 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 13.49% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $18,143 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Mazda CX-9's resale value?
The current average of $18,144 CAD sits slightly below last year's $20,972 CAD.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can make the CX-9 easier to buy now but may also limit short-term upside for a future seller. If you purchase at the right price, you reduce the risk of overpaying in a softer market. The model’s premium feel and distinctive driving character can still help it hold interest among shoppers who want something more upscale than the average family SUV.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Mazda CX-9 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 26.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 13.49% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: Choose the 2017 Mazda CX-9 if you want a three-row SUV with a more premium cabin and a sportier personality than many rivals. If your priority is getting the lowest possible entry price, a nearby year may be worth comparing, but the 2017 is the better fit when you value design, driving feel, and a strong owner satisfaction signal.
