CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Mazda CX-5
Summary
With 131 currently listed for sale and an average price of $17,082 CAD, 32.1% of 2017 Mazda CX-5 listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Mazda CX-5 4.7 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Mazda CX-5 stands out because it combines compact-SUV practicality with a distinctly sporty, near-premium character. Mazda’s design focus gives it a sleek exterior and a beautifully crafted interior, and the model’s appeal is rooted as much in style as in substance. It was also built to be enjoyable to drive, with responsive acceleration from its 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine and a sharp driving feel that suits buyers who want an SUV that feels more car-like than most rivals.
For 2017, the CX-5 came with front-wheel drive as standard and Mazda’s i-Activ AWD as an option, along with a six-speed manual transmission that was standard in Canada until 2019 or a six-speed automatic. The engine produced 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, and Mazda’s turbocharged engine had not yet arrived for this model year. Standard equipment on the GX included 17-inch alloy wheels, a rear-view camera, air conditioning, keyless entry, push-button start, and Mazda Connect with a seven-inch touchscreen display and SMS text delivery function. That mix of equipment helps explain why the CX-5 has long been seen as well equipped for the class.
Its strengths are clear, but there are trade-offs. The CX-5 was praised for its stylish design, smooth ride, and excellent reliability, and owners often liked its comfortable handling and fuel economy on long trips. At the same time, some drivers wanted more power and cargo space, which is worth keeping in mind if practicality is the top priority.

I bought this car to replace the same model that I lost in an accident. It was a year older and a lower trim. This trim is the premium trim and it’s nice. It has a heads up display full of seats. The steering wheel warms up memory seats and it runs like a dream. I really enjoy driving this car..

I bought the sport, base model, and for being a base model the features are pretty good. The only thing I wish I had, was rear vents for the AC.

| Year-Round High | $18,898 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $18,790 CAD |

Is the 2017 Mazda CX-5 a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Mazda CX-5 earns a 4.7/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its stylish design, smooth ride, and excellent reliability, and many also like its comfortable handling and fuel economy on long trips. If you want a compact SUV that feels more car-like than most rivals while still delivering everyday practicality, this model year fits that brief well. With 25.9% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Mazda CX-5 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also highlights excellent reliability, along with a reputation for being dependable and comfortable to live with over time. That combination matters if you want a used SUV you can count on for regular commuting and longer drives. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is finding a well-kept example, so a careful inspection and service-history review still matter.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Mazda CX-5?
This is a moderate market, so you can be selective without expecting every good example to disappear instantly.
- Deal availability: 25.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 321 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.64% compared with last year.

What is the 2017 Mazda CX-5's resale value?
The current average of $17,542 CAD sits slightly below last year's $18,790 CAD.
That softer pricing suggests the market has become a bit more buyer-friendly, which can make resale timing more important if you plan to sell later. If prices remain steady or recover, owners who bought at today’s average may be in a better position than those who paid closer to last year’s level. Strong owner satisfaction can also help keep demand healthy when it is time to list.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Mazda CX-5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 25.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.64% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2017 Mazda CX-5 is a strong choice if you want a stylish, enjoyable-to-drive compact SUV with solid owner approval and a market that still offers some deal opportunities. If your priority is getting the best value, this year deserves a close look. If you are shopping mainly on price, you may also want to compare nearby model years to see whether a lower asking price outweighs the 2017’s stronger satisfaction and market position.
