CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Kia Sportage
Summary
With 203 currently listed for sale and an average price of $12,553 CAD, 27.6% of 2017 Kia Sportage listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Kia Sportage 4.82 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Kia Sportage stands out as a compact SUV that blends strong value with a comfortable, well-equipped feel. In the fourth-generation Sportage, front-wheel drive was offered only on the base trim, while all-wheel drive was standard on the rest of the line-up. It also came with either a naturally aspirated 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine with 181 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque or a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine with as much as 240 hp, giving buyers a clear choice between everyday efficiency and extra punch.
What makes this model especially appealing is its balance of ride quality and interior space. Reviewers praised the fourth-generation Sportage for its excellent ride quality, and it also offered plenty of room in both the front and rear seats for four adults. Standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto added everyday convenience, and the available touchscreen was competitive for its time. Safety equipment was also a strength, with features such as forward collision avoidance assist, auto emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, lane follow assist, and a rear occupant alert system included.
There are a few trade-offs to keep in mind. Cargo space was on the small side compared with competitors such as the Honda CR-V and the Toyota RAV4, and fuel efficiency was below average. In base front-wheel drive form, the 2022 Sportage received a combined Natural Resources Canada estimate of 9.0 litres per 100 kilometres, while the desirable turbocharged engine with all-wheel drive was rated at 11.0 L/100 km combined. Even so, the 2017 Kia Sportage remains distinctive for buyers who want a comfortable, practical SUV with useful features and a solid reputation for value.

Car was amazing. It had more power than it need...which was good. It was in excellent condition with extremely low miles for a vehicle that was 5 years old. It wasnt missing anything that I can think of. I would compare this vehicle to a top of the line sport model of a Hyundai Santa Fe or Honda CRX/Element

Great vehicle! Comfortable, responsive, good road visibility. Heated seats and power driver seat are a great feature along with the climate control and Apple Play. Perfect fit for our family. Good value for the type of vehicle we were shopping for.

I feel like I got a great car at a fantastic price! I did my homework and feel like I can trust this brand. It is just as nice and equipped as my sisters Honda CRV. Its has a better reliability factor than my Jeep Patriot. Looking forward to traveling in this car.

How much does the 2017 Kia Sportage cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $12,546 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $12,543 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $15,234 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $15,182 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −17.36% |
Prices have softened 17.36% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 204 listings available, which gives you a reasonable amount of choice in the used market.
Is the 2017 Kia Sportage a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Kia Sportage earns a 4.8/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its comfort, handling, and value, and they also like the available safety technology and features such as the panoramic sunroof. For you, that makes it a sensible pick if you want a compact SUV that feels well equipped and comfortable for everyday driving. With 27.5% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Kia Sportage reliable?
Owners rate it 4.8/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also highlights reliability and good value compared with other brands, which suggests this Sportage has earned a reputation for being dependable and trouble-free over time. For used buyers, that kind of feedback lowers the risk of unpleasant surprises if the vehicle has been maintained properly.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Kia Sportage?
This looks like a moderate market, so you can be selective without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 27.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 204 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 17.36% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $12,543 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Kia Sportage's resale value?
The current average of $12,546 CAD sits slightly below last year's $15,182 CAD.
That price movement suggests the Sportage has become more accessible for buyers, but it also means a future seller may need to price competitively to stand out. If you buy at today's average, your resale position will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the vehicle has been maintained. The softer market can help you enter at a lower cost, but it may also limit short-term appreciation.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Kia Sportage or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 27.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 17.36% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: You should lean toward the 2017 if you want a comfortable, well-equipped compact SUV and you can find one priced near the lower end of the market. If you're especially price-sensitive, it also makes sense to compare nearby model years and focus on whichever one gives you the best combination of condition, mileage, and asking price.
