CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Kia Soul
Summary
With 50 currently listed for sale and an average price of $9,809 CAD, 34.0% of 2017 Kia Soul listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Kia Soul 4.75 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Kia Soul stands out because it blends quirky styling with real everyday usefulness. Kia’s buying guide describes the Soul as a subcompact hatchback with a funky personality, and it also notes that the model helped shift Kia’s image towards a more appealing, value-conscious brand. For shoppers, that means the Soul is not just about looks: it is meant to be affordable, practical, and distinctive without being as extreme as some of the boxier small cars it is compared with.
For 2017, the Soul gained a 1.6-litre turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine with 201 hp and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission on the SX and SX Tech trims. Those trims also added larger front brakes, a D-shaped steering wheel, and xenon headlights, while blind-spot monitors with rear cross-traffic alert became available and driving modes were added to all trims. The same year also brought a power front passenger seat as a new option, and the Soul EV received a pedestrian warning sound, faster charging, new wheels, and other minor upgrades. That mix of extra performance and added equipment gives the 2017 model a more complete feel than the base car’s simple image might suggest.
At the same time, the Soul still has the practical strengths that made it popular in the first place. The guide points to lots of room inside, and owner feedback echoes that with praise for the spacious interior, comfortable ride, good fuel economy, and strong value. The main drawbacks are that some buyers wanted a better media interface and noted missing armrests, so the 2017 Soul is best seen as a characterful small car that delivers space and usefulness first, with enough available equipment to feel modern.

Lean, mean Kia machine! Shutting my drivers side door for the first time, I could tell the quality of this vehicle! Solid. Stable. Just drove her through a horrible blizzard and she performed like an SUV. I feel safe and sporty behind the wheel -- shes got ZIP! Im 51 and with the telescoping steering wheel plus seat controls, I fit perfectly. The back-up camera and audio features are a marvel. I bought the right vehicle for me!

Sporty but not dodgy , responsive but not twitchy, great on gas mileage but does a decent job of taming the road without too much noise. The creature comfort level is higher than anticipated. I do wish the media interface was better, but it is a 2017.

How much does the 2017 Kia Soul cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $10,526 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $10,277 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $13,099 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $13,106 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −19.69% |
Prices have softened 19.69% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 123 listings available, which suggests you should have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2017 Kia Soul a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Kia Soul earns a 4.75/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Drivers consistently praise its great value, good fuel economy, and comfortable ride, and many also like the spacious interior and modern features. That lines up well with the Soul’s role as a practical, distinctive subcompact hatchback that is meant to be affordable and easy to live with. With 30.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, you may still find worthwhile options if you shop carefully.
Is the 2017 Kia Soul reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The user feedback also points to a dependable ownership experience, with drivers highlighting good fuel economy, comfort, and value over time. That kind of feedback suggests you can count on the Soul to be a sensible daily driver if it has been maintained properly. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the model’s appeal and more about finding one that has been cared for consistently.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Kia Soul?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can be choosy without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 30.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 123 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 19.69% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $10,277 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Kia Soul's resale value?
The current average of $10,526 CAD sits slightly below last year's $13,106 CAD.
That price movement suggests the market has cooled, which can make the Soul easier to buy now but may also limit upside for a future seller. If you own one, the current pricing trend means you should expect resale value to be shaped more by condition, mileage, and equipment than by broad market momentum. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Kia Soul or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 30.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 19.69% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of value, owner satisfaction, and available inventory, the 2017 is the year to focus on. If your priority is stretching your budget as far as possible, a nearby year may be worth comparing, but the 2017 stands out as the more balanced choice for most shoppers.
