CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Kia Soul
Summary
With 47 currently listed for sale and an average price of $9,371 CAD, 34.0% of 2017 Kia Soul listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Kia Soul 4.75 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Kia Soul stands out because it keeps the model’s quirky, boxy personality while remaining genuinely practical. Kia’s buying guide describes the Soul as well-made, affordable, and funky enough to stand out, and it also notes that there is a lot of space inside a Soul along with a lot of standard features across all trims. For shoppers who want something small and affordable yet practical, that combination is a big part of the appeal.
For this generation, the Soul moved to a new chassis with Kia’s most current technology, powertrains, and safety features. It also gained a three-centimetre longer wheelbase and 5.5-centimetre longer total length, which helped create more comfort and interior space. In Canada, the 2017 model year brought a 1.6-litre turbocharged inline four-cylinder with 201 hp and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission on the SX and SX Tech trims, along with larger front brakes, a D-shaped steering wheel, and xenon headlights. Blind-spot monitors with rear cross-traffic alert became available, driving modes were added to all trims, and a power front passenger seat was newly optional. The guide also notes that heated front seats and side mirrors were standard, while available features included a 10.25-inch touchscreen, a head-up display, and a 10-speaker Harman Kardon stereo with a subwoofer.
The main trade-offs are worth keeping in mind. The buying guide says earlier models are slow, and the user review summary points to a desire for an improved media interface and missing armrests. Even so, the 2017 Kia Soul remains appealing because it blends distinctive styling, useful space, and a strong value proposition with enough available equipment to feel modern.

Lean, mean Kia machine! Shutting my drivers side door for the first time, I could tell the quality of this vehicle! Solid. Stable. Just drove her through a horrible blizzard and she performed like an SUV. I feel safe and sporty behind the wheel -- shes got ZIP! Im 51 and with the telescoping steering wheel plus seat controls, I fit perfectly. The back-up camera and audio features are a marvel. I bought the right vehicle for me!

Sporty but not dodgy , responsive but not twitchy, great on gas mileage but does a decent job of taming the road without too much noise. The creature comfort level is higher than anticipated. I do wish the media interface was better, but it is a 2017.

How much does the 2017 Kia Soul cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $10,815 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $10,285 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $13,023 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $12,836 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −15.75% |
Prices have softened 15.75% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 126 listings available, which suggests a decent amount of inventory for you to compare.
Is the 2017 Kia Soul a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Kia Soul earns a 4.75/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Drivers consistently praise its great value, good fuel economy, comfortable ride, and spacious interior, and many also like the modern features it offers. That makes it a sensible fit if you want a small, affordable vehicle that still feels practical and distinctive. With 32.5% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a fair number of attractive options to consider.
Is the 2017 Kia Soul reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The user feedback also points to a dependable ownership experience, with drivers describing the Soul as a good-value vehicle that delivers a comfortable ride and good fuel economy over time. That combination suggests it can be a sensible used buy if you want something you can count on for everyday use.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about the core appeal and more about finding one that has been maintained well and still feels fresh inside.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Kia Soul?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 32.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 126 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 15.75% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $10,285 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Kia Soul's resale value?
The current average of $10,815 CAD sits slightly below last year's $12,836 CAD.
That price movement suggests the 2017 Soul has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can be helpful if you are buying now and planning to sell later. If the market stays steady, a lower entry price today can reduce the amount of value you lose over your ownership period. The Soul’s broad appeal as a practical, distinctive small vehicle should also help keep it relevant with used shoppers.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Kia Soul or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 32.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 15.75% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2017 Kia Soul is the better pick if you want a well-liked, practical, and value-oriented used hatchback with a strong mix of space and personality. If your priority is stretching your budget as far as possible, you may also want to compare nearby years and focus on the best-priced examples, especially those near the lower end of the current range.
