What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Hyundai Elantra?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The L trim is the value edition and comes exclusively with a six-speed manual transmission, heated front seats, and keyless entry. Higher trims add more comfort and convenience, and the top Limited Ultimate brings autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, leather seats, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, an eight-speaker Infinity sound system, and an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system.
• Powertrain: You get a front-wheel-drive layout only, with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine making 147 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque. The automatic is the more efficient choice, while the manual trades some efficiency for driver involvement.
• Safety package: Available driver-assistance features include forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and a backup camera with rear cross-path detection. Some of the most advanced systems are reserved for upper trims.
• Infotainment: Standard equipment includes USB/auxiliary audio inputs, Bluetooth, and SiriusXM satellite radio. Higher trims add navigation with turn-by-turn instructions in the colour display in the gauge cluster, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are available for smartphone integration.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada estimates fuel economy at 8.3 L/100 km city, 6.4 L/100 km highway, and 7.4 L/100 km combined with the six-speed automatic. With the manual, those figures rise to 9.1 L/100 km city, 6.6 L/100 km highway, and 8.0 L/100 km combined.

Which 2017 Hyundai Elantra trim should I buy?

The 2017 Hyundai Elantra is offered in 9 trim levels: L, LE, GL, GLS, SE, Sport, Limited, Limited SE, and Limited Ultimate.

Here's the short version:

• L: This is the value-focused starting point, and it gives you heated front seats and keyless entry, but it is also the most basic version and is sold only with the manual transmission.
• LE: This is the first step up if you want a more rounded everyday Elantra without jumping too far in price.
• GL: This trim adds more equipment and is a sensible middle-ground choice if you want extra comfort and convenience.
• GLS: This is a stronger pick if you want a better-equipped car without going all the way to the upper trims.
• SE: This trim continues the gradual upgrade path and suits you if you want more features while staying away from the top-end pricing.
• Sport: Choose this if you want a more distinctive version of the Elantra lineup.
• Limited: This is the trim family that the expert review points to as the best value, thanks to its strong mix of comfort, technology, and overall equipment.
• Limited SE: This is for you if you want a more upscale feel than the mid-range trims.
• Limited Ultimate: This is the most fully equipped version, adding autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, leather seats, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, an eight-speaker Infinity sound system, and an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system.

The safety-package trim note is simple: the most advanced driver-assistance features are concentrated in the upper trims, especially Limited Ultimate.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Hyundai Elantra?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can be patient and still find a decent example.

• Deal availability: 24.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 363 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 14.83% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $10,208 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Hyundai Elantra's resale value?

The current average of $10,232 CAD sits slightly below last year's $12,013 CAD.

That decline suggests the market has become more favourable for buyers, but it also means a future seller may need to price carefully to stay competitive. The current range still shows healthy demand for clean examples, especially when the car is well equipped and presented well. If you buy at the right price and keep the car in strong condition, you should have a better chance of limiting depreciation pressure later.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.73/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Hyundai Elantra safe?

The 2017 Hyundai Elantra earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gives it a four-star safety rating while raising a concern about side impacts potentially causing injury to rear passengers.

It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes electronic stability control, vehicle stability management, traction control, and a tire pressure monitoring system. Available driver-assistance features include forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and a backup camera with rear cross-path detection. The main caveat is the NHTSA side-impact concern about possible injury to rear passengers.

Should I buy a 2017 Hyundai Elantra or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 24.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 14.83% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.73/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It stands out as a thorough redesign with strong styling, technology, efficiency, and safety for the money.

The bottom line: If you want the most polished version of this generation’s value-focused formula, the 2017 is the one to target. It makes the most sense for you if comfort, efficiency, and equipment matter more than acceleration. If you are especially price-sensitive, a nearby year can still make sense, but the 2017 is the better pick when you want the strongest blend of features and overall appeal.
