CarGurus Analysis: 2017 BMW 4 Series
Summary
With 109 currently listed for sale and an average price of $21,115 CAD, 31.2% of 2017 BMW 4 Series listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 BMW 4 Series 4.08 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2017 BMW 4 Series stands out as a stylish, driver-focused premium coupe, convertible, or Gran Coupe with a lower, sleeker shape than the 3 Series it was derived from. BMW also gave it a distinct identity by moving these two-door spin-offs to even-numbered badging, and the 4 Series Gran Coupe added a five-door hatchback body style that broadened its appeal. For 2017, the first-generation car had already received an early update that brought cosmetic and tech changes, including LED headlights for all models and a stiffer suspension for a sharper drive.
What makes the 2017 model especially appealing is the combination of strong performance and generous equipment. The engine range for this year included the 430i and 440i, with 248 horsepower and 320 horsepower respectively, and buyers could choose rear-wheel drive or xDrive all-wheel drive. Standard equipment was also respectable, with 17-inch alloy wheels, xenon headlights, automatic climate control, power front seats and BMW’s iDrive operating system. That said, the 4 Series was never the cheapest choice, and some owners have noted that expected features such as navigation and a backup camera were not always present, while rear-seat comfort and reliability concerns can also be drawbacks.

The car is in worse conditions than shown in these photos. The engine bay is dirty and the brakes of rust on them. The car was also driven twice the national average in one year (29k miles) and is $3,000 overpriced. The salesperson was super nice and helpful but the car was just in bad conditions.

The only blemish so far is it lacks remote start, other than that I love this car. I have the 440i and am impressed with the power, comfort and drivability, a solid 4.95. I’ve had it 3 days and am still in the can’t wait to drive it again stage. Great job BMW.

This BMW 4 series car is absolutely stunning. Beautiful colors both inside and out and very well equipped. And the price sure seems fair when considering modern day pricing structures. I really came close to buying this car but my BMW X3 just suits my needs better.

How much does the 2017 BMW 4 Series cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $21,270 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $17,855 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $23,767 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $23,767 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −10.50% |
Prices have softened 10.50% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 111 listings available, which gives you a reasonable amount of choice in the used market.
Is the 2017 BMW 4 Series a good car?
Generally — the 4.08/5 user rating suggests you can feel reasonably confident shopping this model year. Drivers consistently praise its performance and handling, along with its power and quality, and many also like its stylish design. The 2017 BMW 4 Series fits well if you want a premium coupe, convertible, or Gran Coupe with a sporty feel and a more distinctive shape than the 3 Series. With 34.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to find a competitive example.
Is the 2017 BMW 4 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 4.08/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a car that many drivers enjoy for its quality and performance, but reliability concerns and minor issues do come up in some reviews. For used buyers, that means you should pay close attention to service history and overall condition, because long-term ownership risk may be higher than you’d want if maintenance records are thin.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 BMW 4 Series?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 34.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 111 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.50% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $17,855 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 BMW 4 Series's resale value?
The current average of $21,270 CAD sits slightly below last year's $23,767 CAD.
That price movement suggests the market has eased, which can make the car more attractive to buyers now but may also limit upside for a future seller if values continue to soften. If you buy at the right price and keep the car in strong condition, you may be better positioned to protect your resale position later. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.08/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 BMW 4 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 34.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.50% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.08/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2017 is a sensible pick if you want the updated first-generation 4 Series with a strong mix of style, performance, and value, especially when you can find a well-priced example. If you’re more price-sensitive, a nearby year may be worth comparing, but the 2017 stands out as the better-balanced choice when you want a newer-feeling used BMW without stretching too far on budget.
