Why it stands out
The 2016 Toyota Tacoma stands out as a mid-size truck that blends Toyota’s long-standing reputation for durability with a more modern feature set than earlier Tacomas. It debuted for the 2016 model year, but it was not a full clean-sheet redesign; Toyota kept much of the previous truck’s mechanical and structural hardware while adding new systems and a major technology upgrade. That makes it appealing to buyers who want a proven pickup with updated equipment rather than a radically different formula.
For this model year, the Tacoma came standard with a 2.7-litre four-cylinder engine, while the available 3.5-litre V6 was the more common and satisfying choice. A six-speed automatic transmission sent power to the rear wheels or available four-wheel drive, and the manual-transmission story had already narrowed by this point, with the six-speed manual limited to specific V6 off-road and sport configurations. The truck also offered Access Cab and Double Cab body styles, five-foot and six-foot beds, and a range of trims that included off-road-focused versions and the Limited for more comfort-oriented buyers.
The 2016 Tacoma’s biggest strengths are its off-road capability, strong reliability record, and broad availability of safety and convenience features. Toyota Safety Sense became standard in 2018, so that broader suite of standard driver aids does not apply to this model year, but the Tacoma was already known for offering useful equipment such as a backup camera and available infotainment upgrades. Its main drawbacks are familiar ones: the base engine is underwhelming, the crew cab is cramped, and the truck can be expensive compared with rivals. Still, for shoppers who value toughness, resale strength, and a truck that can handle both daily use and trail duty, the 2016 Tacoma remains distinctive.

Sleek styling. 4x4, long bed, 6 cylinder. It has “go” power. 4 doors makes it comfortable for passengers.

Toyota are great mid-size trucks that last forever however, I'm only 6ft and I had a hard time fitting in the truck.

We purchased the 2016 Tacoma. We had running boards added as part of the purchase. The storage compartments are of good size. The phone sync and navigation systems were easy to set up. The manual was easy to follow. It is a nice ride.

Is the 2016 Toyota Tacoma a good car?
Generally — the 4.33/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction for this model year. Owners consistently praise its reliability, resale value, and long-lasting performance, while also noting its usefulness as a mid-size truck with a practical, versatile setup. That fits well if you want a proven pickup for daily driving, work duties, or weekend use, especially since the Tacoma’s appeal is tied to toughness and broad capability. With 20.7% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Toyota Tacoma reliable?
Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to reliability, dependable performance, and long-lasting ownership as core strengths. That kind of reputation matters if you want a used truck you can count on over time, especially when you’re planning to keep it for the long haul. For used buyers, the main risk is less about the Tacoma’s basic durability and more about finding one that has been maintained properly.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Toyota Tacoma?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without expecting deep discounts across the board.
- Deal availability: 20.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 82 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.80% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $29,224 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Toyota Tacoma's resale value?
The current average of $29,297 CAD sits slightly below last year's $30,776 CAD.
That softer pricing can help you buy more confidently now, but it also suggests future sellers may not see the same immediate upside they would in a stronger market. Even so, the Tacoma’s reputation for reliability and long-lasting performance should help support demand when you eventually sell. If you buy well and keep the truck in good condition, you’re still starting from a position of relative strength.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 Toyota Tacoma or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 20.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.80% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: If you want the newer-generation Tacoma with updated equipment and a strong owner-reported reputation, the 2016 is the better starting point. If your priority is stretching your budget further, a different year may be worth considering, but the 2016 remains the cleaner choice when you want a proven truck with solid market support.
